Value of informal networks

"Several studies show that at least one third of employees have obtained their current

job through family members or friends, pointing towards the importance of informal

social networks in the job search process.

Such networks may serve as an information

transmission mechanism and therefore have the potential to enhance the efficiency of the labor market."
- Christian Dustmann, Albrecht Glitz and Uta Schonberg, Referral-Based Job Search Networks, April 2011

Referrals were the leading source of all external hires in 2011

EMPLOYERS

Rainbow Cabinets Logo
Rainbow Cabinets is a family-owned company that has been manufacturing and installing custom commercial, medical, institutional and residential casework in Central and North Central Florida since 1981. Projects include Cuvee Wine Bar, College of Central Florida, The Church at the Springs, First Avenue National Bank and the Belleview Library, among many others.

Rainbow Cabinets' hiring manager, Carlene Griner, said the company got connected with Workforce Connection in April after reading an employer success story in NetWorker that highlighted the On-the-Job Training program.

"I filled in the online application form and got in touch and we were on our way," Griner explained. The OJT program reimburses businesses up to 90 percent of an eligible new hire's wage during the period the company is training them.

"
Our hiring needs were and are to find people who want to work, who want to learn our trade and will hopefully stay with us long term," she said. "The OJT program found a gentleman who is a perfect fit for our organization."

Griner added that she also likes that the "personnel at Workforce will screen the candidates prior to sending me resumes. This saves time by cutting down the time it takes to interview the people who either can't perform the work or don't really want to work."

The service, available to local businesses at no charge, is one Griner recommends.

"We are very pleased with the OJT Program, the job ads (workforce) placed for us and everyone that I've been in contact with at Workforce," she said. "(Workforce Connection) is wonderful to work with, everyone is always available. I tell everyone to use them."
