Best Job Bet: Word of Mouth

"(One of) the best ways to get a job now is the same as in the '70s and the '80s - word of mouth."

Adam Cobb, assistant professor of management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania,

Bloomberg Businessweek

A large body of research shows that half or more of all jobs come through informal channels connections to friends, families, and colleagues, according to Limited Network Connections and the Distribution of Wages, a study by economists Kenneth J. Arrow of Stanford and Ron Borzekowski of the Federal Reserve. What matters, the study concludes, is a recommendation       and personal assessment.

EMPLOYERS

Midland National Life Insurance
Midland National Life Insurance Company is a classic example of American perseverance and ingenuity. Founded in 1906, the private, employee-owned company has survived two world wars, the Great Depression and now the Great Recession. With main offices in Souix Fall, SD and Des Moines, Iowa, Midland holds more than one million life insurance and annuity policies with assets of more than $30 billion.

But when it comes to the company's true assets, Regional Sales Director Ron Thompson of Ocala knows it's all about the quality of Midland's human resources. That's why Thompson has turned to Workforce Connection and the Employ Florida Marketplace to find top talent, and why he continues to do so.

This time, the talent pipeline came from Workforce Connection's new Patriot Job Connection program. In partnership with the College of Central Florida, the Patriot Job Connection provides employment services for any postsecondary student, regardless of where they attend school in Citrus, Levy and Marion counties.

Patria V. was the Patriot Job Connection's first student placement, and it was a full-time position at Midland National.

Patria said she loves her job and looks forward to working for Midland National for many years to come.

Thompson is pleased, too.

"In the past we used Employ Florida for our hiring needs and have always found it very helpful," he said. "From our last job posting we found Patria and she stepped in and we never missed a beat!"
