FEEL THE POWER?

"Networking is making links from people we know to people they know, in an organized way, for a specific purpose, while remaining committed to doing our part, expecting nothing in return."

-Donna Fisher and Sandy Vilas, Power Networking

"Joe Girard is considered 'The World's Greatest Salesman' by the Guinness Book of World Records. The Law of 250 is Girard's belief that everyone knows 250 people in his or her life who is important enough to invite to a wedding or who will show up at their funeral.
If you know 250 people, they each know 250 people. That's 62,500 second-line contacts - 15 million
third-line contacts. Feel the power?"
-Indianapolis Private Industry Council

Referrals were the leading source of all external hires last year.

Steering Creations, Inc., a new Ocala company launched earlier this year by the original owners of the former Steering Design, provides comfortable, stunningly attractive and customized steering wheels to the trucking industry with the goal of significantly improving the truck driver's daily traveling experience.

Currently, Steering Creations, Inc. (SCI) imports and distributes design-conscious steering wheels and is the exclusive North American distributor of Grant and VICTOR products. Later this year the company plans to add to its product line by manufacturing wheels in the United States.

In 2009, when researching the viability of a different business in Ocala, SCI President Michael Umlauf was introduced by members of the Ocala/Marion County Economic Development Corporation to Workforce Connection CEO Rusty Skinner. Though the other company ended up elsewhere, Umlauf said he was "impressed with the professional and courteous manner in which Workforce Connection operated."

That impression stuck with Umlauf so that when it came time to set up SCI in Ocala he contacted Workforce Connection. Umlauf said that Workforce Connection staff promptly responded to questions about grants and educational credits. While those incentives were not ultimately needed, Umlauf decided to use Workforce Connection to help meet the staffing needs of his growing company.

He said that Workforce Connection found qualified job candidates, coordinated initial interviews and provided private office space for the interviews. In April, the company hired its controller and Umlauf reported that SCI's accounting and office assistant was brought on board this month.

"It is my expectation that (our new staff member) will contribute significantly to this organization," Umlauf said. "Once again, this resume was furnished by Workforce Connection and the interview was performed in one of Workforce Connection's offices."

Umlauf said that because of "this successful track record and my respect for the Workforce Connection staff" he is now posting a position for a mechanical engineer and "will be asking them to be a match-maker one more time."
