Sue McHenry AISES Scholarship
On September 20th, the American Indian Science & Engineering Society held a potluck to celebrate the newly named Sue McHenry AISES Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the UAF chapter of AISES.
(L to R) Stefan Weingarth, Sue McHenry, Ralph Sinnok
The scholarship was named for former AISES advisor, Sue McHenry, to recognize her dedication to students and the AISES mission. This year's Sue McHenry AISES Scholarship recipients are Ralph Sinnok and Stefan Weingarth.
Stay Healthy, Warm, and Happy!
The semester is well under way and winter is just around the corner. If you don't have winter clothes, now's the time to start thinking about getting them! As unfortunate as it may seem, -40 is not a valid excuse to not go to classes. On that note, the UAF Winter Warm-Up, an event that consists of picking up free clothing, household goods and sporting goods, will be held on October 6th at the Wood Center. Go there and grab what you need, everything's free!

Along with winter comes flu season. Keep yourself healthy by dressing warmly and washing your hands frequently! Also, multiple places around town, including the Center for Health and Counseling, administer flu shots. Be sure to get yours!

Native Games
There's a new club on campus! Native Games gatherings will be held at the Student Recreation Center on Fridays at 5:30pm. It's a fun thing to do on a Friday night, so grab your friends and an extra pair of shoes and head down to the SRC! If you have any questions about this club, you can contact Gabrielle Russell at (907) 474-7871.

Also, we'd like to thank Marjorie Tahbone for creating this awesome ball! Thank you Marjorie, our students will enjoy it for years to come!

Positive Connection Nights
During the month of October, we will be hosting two positive connection nights. Our PCNs are a great way to spend a Friday night. You'll be surrounded by friends, activity, and good food!

On October 5th, we will be screening "On The Ice." This movie follows two teenage boys in Barrow as they struggle to cope with and hide the murder of their friend. We will also have moose stew available if you're hungry!

On October 26th, we will have a Halloween celebration. You're encouraged to come wearing a snazzy costume! Watch our facebook page later in the month for more information about this PCN.

Alaska Federation of Natives
AFN is coming up soon! The Elder's and Youth Conference will be held on October 15-17th and the Convention will be on October 18-20th. If you plan to go, make sure you are caught  up in your classes and talk to your instructors about turning in assignments or taking mid-terms before you go!

While you're there, you may want to check out the Rural Alaska Honors Institute's film premiere. It will be at 10:00am in the Dena'ina Center. RAHI has been working hard to produce a documentary for their 30th anniversary and will hold their first public screening during the conference.

Financial Help
The Financial Aid Office is great when you need help with scholarships, grants and loans, but that's not all they do! This semester, they have a wide array of workshops designed to help you efficiently manage your money. If you want to be smart with your money, attend one or all of the following sessions! This is a listing for October, look for the next Reachout to see their later workshops or check their website.

October 4
  • Things You Buy With Your PFD
October 11
  • Discover Your Money Personality
October 18
  • How to Buy a Car
All of these workshops are from 1:05pm to 1:55pm in Gruening 402.
