Tuning to the Right Frequency
The myriad of different ways in which our minds are bombarded each day with both useful and useless information makes it difficult to achieve clarity. Author David Allen says, "Your mind is an incredible servant but terrible master." If we feed our minds with harmful data, we should not be surprised at the decisions that come from this.
Some have said that managing wealth decisions for individuals is 1 part theory and 2 parts emotion. While this may overstate the case somewhat, it is true that individual investors tend to react to current events instead of acting on a plan to accomplish long-term goals. The "right frequency" is to keep your eyes fully focused on "the prize", whatever that may be. (See the new Planwise Tool which can help you see the future impact of your financial decisions.)
The evidence-based investing approach that we follow keys off of a half-century of research. Most of what is written or spoken each day about personal finance largely ignores this research and focuses instead on the "2 parts emotion" mentioned earlier. The search for the illusive "best fund or best stock" is literally ruining many investors financially.
It may only be a slight reach to say that our evidence-based and goals-focused approach to investing saves people from a cruel fate. If nothing else, at the very least, we are providing confidence that the right path is being pursued.
We have 3 decades of experience combining the science of investing with the art of financial planning. We welcome introductions to your family, friends and colleagues. Don't keep us a secret.
