How To Be a More Effective Communicator
- Have an awareness of the importance that communication has in your life, personally, socially and professionally.
- Have the desire and willingness to improve.
- Understand that communication is a process that needs continual attention.
- Be a student of your own communication. Observe, read, surf the internet, attend workshops or join your local Toastmasters Club to increase your knowledge. Increased knowledge can increase confidence.
- Prepare for communication interactions and opportunities.
- Learn to be an effective and empathic listener. Speak less, listen more.
- Learn to "edit" yourself before speaking. Decide if your idea(s) are relevant, vocabulary selection is appropriate and your thoughts are clear and concise.
- Realize that the communication interaction is not about you; it's about your communication partner.
