Back Issue: EBISS # 4 September 2010
Greetings!

The crazy first few weeks of school have arrived!  Thank you to everyone who has entered your change of contact information.  We appreciate that this is a very busy time for you, and are grateful for you taking a few minutes to help us with our records.

Please note that we have our Welcome Back EBISS webinar coming up next week.  This is the same webinar that we mentioned in our last email sent out on 8/31 to EBISS Systems Coaches and EBISS Leadership people. As you may have noticed, the dates are different from what we announced last Spring.  It looks like we may have jumped the gun on that one and are sorry for any inconvenience it might have caused you.  To make up for this, we've shortened the webinar to 30 minutes for the whole EBISS team and then 30 additional minutes for EBISS Systems Coaches.  We've also made the same webinar available to you on two different dates for your convenience.  You are only expected to attend one of these webinars.

The webinar dates are Tuesday, September 21st from 3:00 - 3:30 for the EBISS team, and 3:30 - 4:00 for the EBISS Systems Coach.  The other option is Tuesday, September 28th from 10:00 - 10:30 for the EBISS team, and 10:30 - 11:00 for the EBISS Systems Coach. Log-in information can be found through the EBISS calendar.  We will also send log-in information via email shortly before the webinar begins.

Another way to keep up to date is through the EBISS website.  Just  click or scroll to our calendar and then open up the item from the calendar.  You will find details about the event by clicking on it.

We are looking forward to speaking with each of you at one of our two upcoming Welcome Back Webinars.

With best wishes for a fabulous new school year,

Your EBISS State Coordinators

EBISS Has a New Website!

We have been working on this site over the summer and are optimistic that you will find it to be very useful. The EBISS Google calendar is embedded on this site for your easy access, and you will find past newsletters archived for your reference.  You will also find links to deliverables and Webinars that provide information specific to EBISS districts.

A baby, a retirement, and a new EBISS coordinator...

For those of you keeping tabs on Moira McKenna, our former EBISS coordinator from Southern Oregon,  she gave birth to a baby boy in August.  His name is Fionn (pronounced "Finn") William McKenna Stoy.  Mom reports that he is "healthy and sweet".  We all wish you a wonderful year with your baby Moira, and hope to see you at a conference before too long.  Many thanks to Kim Hosford for taking up the baton and continuing the excellent work with our Southern Oregon EBISS districts.

Ginger Kowalko has decided to give retirement another try. Actually, she's calling it "retirement" but says that she will be focusing on secondary literacy with an emphasis on content literacy. She's hard at work developing the third edition of her program "ACCESS" - Academic Content Competence:  Every Student Succeeding.  Ginger told us that one of the highlights she experienced as an EBISS coordinator was when her districts had their meetings in place, they were using data to make decisions, and then following up with action items.  She thinks of the process as similar to creating the right sound effects for a movie - lots of dissonant sounds that come together in a single moment to make something that's wonderful! Many thanks to Ginger for all of her hard work, and endless supply of enthusiasm.

And last but certainly not least, a big welcome to Marianne Oakes who has joined us as a new EBISS coordinator.  Marianne will be working with Ginger's former districts; McKenzie, Lowell, and Siusalaw.  Marianne will also be working with the Oakridge EBISS team.  Marianne comes to us from Lane ESD where she has been working as a Literacy Specialist for the last 3 years.  She will continue there in that role, while joining EBISS part time.  Marianne tells us that she still volunteers in her daughter's classroom, but now her daughter is the teacher!  Something to keep in mind when working with her... she loves college football and will support the Ducks unless the Buckeyes are in town.  She tries to balance the two by having a U of O sticker on her car, but a Buckeye cup-holder.  Regardless of her football allegiances, we welcome Marianne by saying, "it's nice to have you on the EBISS team" (and we'll be giving you an EBISS pin to wear and show your team spirit).
