April 2012 News from OMA

Greetings!

Happy Earth Day!  We hope spring flowers are brightening your school gardens around the area.  OMA has had a wonderfully busy spring with workshops and outreach, and we are looking forward to the Annual Spring Tea in just a week.

The Spring Workshop on Special Needs in the Montessori Classroom, with Nancy Lechner and Hillary Hyde, was inspiring, uplifting, and informative.   Thank you to the nearly 80 people who participated, and many thanks to our speakers.  Providence Montessori School again provided the Childcare Center and the coffee - many thanks!  If you attended this workshop and would like to write a Forza Vitale article about the material covered, your OMA volunteers would be happy to share it with the membership.   Contact us to volunteer:  jbryznar@gmail.com

The Administrator's Meeting in early April opened the discussion of emergency preparedness.  Further conversation has continued on the OMA Administrators' Google Group.  Contact us if you would like to be added to that group.  Notes from the meeting are available through the group site.  One correction, the MINW Assistants to Infancy course begins this summer, but there is not a new course starting in the fall for that level - though there are primary and elementary courses beginning in the fall!

OMA's Spring Tea is on May 6th, between 2pm and 4pm, at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd.  Please, join us for this lovely tradition of bringing together the community of guides and Montessorians for conversation and refreshments.  There is no charge to attend - we would like to see you there.  We will present the Susie Huston Memorial Award to Jennifer Lyons of Childpeace, and the Outstanding Dedication Award to Mercedes Castle of AllRoads Learning Community.  Upcoming graduates from teacher training programs will be introduced and welcomed.

Kathleen Lloyd, PhD, has written a beautiful biography of Susie Huston to help share her special work and story with those who did not know her.  You may view her biography here or visit our website for more details.

Volunteer!  OMA is planning the Assistant's Workshops in Portland and the Salem area.  This year, we will push the date back into September, to allow for a more interactive workshop, as assistants will bring some classroom experience and questions with them.  The role of the assistant will be explored and supported; this workshop will be helpful for both new and seasoned assistants.  Dr. Kathleen Lloyd and Amy Williams will again lead the workshop.
