Greetings!
whole child montessori bike rack

Have you seen this bike rack?  Whole Child Montessori Center was gifted a custom Pink Tower Bike Rack from the 2010 graduating children!  It was handcrafted by Matt Cartwright with Cartwright Design,  www.cartwrightdesign.com.  It's beautiful, and is adorned with painted tiles made by the children at the base.  Thank you, Whole Child, for sharing this picture with our community.

Thank you to so many of you for attending the Winter Workshop in Eugene with Kathleen Lloyd, PhD.  It was inspiring, informative, and passionate.  We thank Kerry Knust and Far Horizons for being such gracious hosts, and we thank Kathleen for her wonderful presentation, and for the work she does to bridge the world of Montessori and academic research.

OMA Winter Workshop - Kerry Knust and Kathleen Lloyd, PhD

OMA Winter Workshop 2011

Kerry Knust and Kathleen Lloyd, PhD

OMA is pleased to represent your schools through our new website and at local preschool fairs.  We've recently attended the Vancouver MOMS Club fair, and we'll be at the Hillsdale Library preschool fair on Feb. 5th, 10am - 12pm.

We are also gearing-up for the Spring Workshop on April 9th with Polli Soholt at Providence Child Care Center.  And, Dr. Steven Hughes is returning to Portland for an evening lecture, which we'll cosponsor with MINW and other local schools.  OMA is organizing a special time for administrators to reconnect with Dr. Hughes during a morning presentation and luncheon at MINW on Friday, April 29th.

Please, look around your school community with open eyes and hearts; note ways in which your colleagues inspire your work.  Share your gratitude by nominating a teacher, administrator, or gracious volunteer for the OMA awards, to be presented at the Spring Tea on May 14th.  I'll include links and information for all of these events below; check the website often for upcoming events and news.  Contact me with your school's news and happenings.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Ryznar

Sharing the Gift:  Montessori Information for Parents

A Workshop For Guides with Polli Soholt

Montessorians know that the more parents understand about the philosophy and theory behind the method, the more committed they become to the program. It is also clear that if we can provide parents with meaningful information they can put into practice at home, they will experience the benefits in the home environment. The children benefit from this also, as their home and Montessori environments are compatible, making it easier for them to follow their natural path of development.

If we look at the time we have with parents as opportunities to share this incredible Montessori information, we will see that there are indeed many ways and means to help them come to a competent understanding of their children and the roles of the home and Montessori environments.

Polli Soholt, a highly regarded author and Montessorian, will offer a presentation taking participants step by step through a typical year, highlighting ways to bring Montessori information to parents in small, understandable increments.  Participants will be able to take what they learn from this workshop and apply it to their own situations, enriching the parent teacher relationship in the process.

This workshop will take place at Providence Child Care Center on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Costs:  Members $50 per participant.

             Nonmembers $65 per participant.

Individual OMA Membership and Workshop $90 per participant.

Workshop Fee includes lunch and refreshments.

Steven Hughes Public Lecture
Thursday, April 28, 2011
7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Steven Hughes

School 2.0

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone over 100 years ago, yet would have recognized any telephone in use for most of the 20th century. It was only a few years ago that "Telephone 1.0" was replaced by mobile phones and bluetooth gadgets and we entered the world of "Telephone 2.0." For all our technological progress, education throughout the world predominantly follows a "School 1.0" model. Indeed, the basic features of Teacher, Learner, and Curriculum would all be familiar to Plato or Socrates were they to reappear today.

However, life and work in the 21st century have placed increasing pressure on the School 1.0 model. What should young people be learning (or learning to do) to experience successful, happy--indeed interesting--lives in the 21st century? Can traditional school give young people what they need, or is it time to rethink education--to consider "School 2.0?" What does neuroscience tell us? Will the role of teachers change? What will students do? Will School 2.0 be as unrecognizable to us now as a bluetooth earpiece would be to Bell?

In this special presentation, Dr. Steven Hughes will discuss the challenges faced by educators in the 21st century, and consider some promising approaches that are setting the stage for School 2.0.

OMA is a proud sponsor of this Montessori Institute Northwest event.

Tickets $15.00.  Order here.
