Park Volunteers end the season with a picnic!
|
2011 was a banner year for the LFP Parks. The agreement with the City was to provide citizen volunteers to help maintain the parks. The Park Volunteer Program work parties began in June and continued through September. This effort was a partnership between the Stewardship Foundation, the city and the citizens and we are very happy with the outcome. Grace Cole Park was already spared from the budget cuts as the LFP Stewardship Foundation had a long standing previous agreement with the City to help care for that park. That left Lyon Creek, Blue Heron, Animal Acres, Eagle Scout and Horizon View to care for, and care they did as the teams of volunteers worked tirelessly to beautify our parks. The volunteer process started with LFP Goat Days held in conjunction with the 50-year celebration of LFP. The City sat down and worked out a plan with the LFP Stewardship Foundation whereas they retained the power tool tasks and the volunteers took on light maintenance. The partnership worked as the parks have never looked better. The volunteers for Grace Cole will still be working in that park for several more months but the remaining park volunteers are hanging up their hoes, rakes and pitch forks till next year. To celebrate the season, volunteers gathered at the LFP Civic Club on Sunday, September 25th for a well-earned picnic. The volunteers were very enthusiastic about the experience. Linda Holman, the Master Gardener who manages the volunteer program said, "Next year we should have even more volunteers as we have moved the work parties from the week day to the week end." This move will allow more working families the opportunity to volunteer. Parties interested in learning more about next year's volunteer program can reach Linda Holman at 206-817-8995 or email her at lhholman@comcast.net.

They learn to communicate, by various media, how we can all make a difference locally and planet-wide.

New LFPSF Board Members
|
We are extremely pleased to welcome two new Board members: Dale Sanderson and Karin McGinn.Dale Sanderson Dale is an avid walker on streets and trails of Lake Forest Park. He has a strong interest in creating new pedestrian pathways in LFP to enhance the ability of residents to enjoy the wonderful beauty of the city. Dale is a graduate of the University of Washington's School of Medicine/MEDEX Physician Assistant training program. He holds a BS in Biology degree as well a Master of Public Health degree. He works as a PA in several psychiatric settings and lectures frequently on the psychiatric and medical care of individuals with intellectual disabilities. He is active in supporting psychiatric practice and training for PAs. He serves as a member of the LFP Transportation Commission.
Karin McGinn Karin brings with her a profound interest in the environment and a significant career as editor with the Seattle Post Intelligencer. In her words: "I've lived in Lake Forest Park for almost 27 years (I'm originally from New York State). My husband, John, and I have been together for 41 years, married 32. We love animals and have been doting 'guardians' of numerous dogs and cats, plus squirrels, birds, raccoon families, or whatever wanders into our yard. I was fortunate to work in journalism (33 years: four newspapers, the last being the Seattle P-I, where I worked 24+ years). John and I are music lovers, fans of various sports, supporters of the arts and TV cable snobs. We hope that we will be able to get back in our kayaks sometime soon, and dream of owning another RV so we can hit the road again."
