"Wild Places in City Spaces"

Grant Work Completed

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF) has completed the final phase of the $9850 "Wild Places in City Spaces" grant awarded to us by the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks. Work on this phase, which began January 1, 2011, focused on the continued removal of English Ivy from the trees and ground in Grace Cole Nature Park, which contains headwaters of Brookside Creek, and removal of Ivy from trees along McAleer Creek adjacent to Perkins Way.

Results of our two contracts with Friends of Cedar River Watershed are shown below.

Partnership Totals:
11 Restoration work parties
373 volunteers, 102 youth engaged
1,473 hours of service contributed
7.9 acres of habitat enhanced, and 52 trees removed of Ivy at Grace Cole Nature Park and along McAleer Creek

Grace Cole Park before restoration
Before
Re-vegetation has begun in areas where mono-cultures of Ivy existed. It will continue into the fall, when rainfall will provide natural irrigation. Some areas, fortunately, have adequate stands of native Salal, Mahonia (Oregon grape) and Sword fern and other natives to recover on their own.

After Grace Cole renovation
After
Funds for purchase of native plants for re-vegetation have come to the Foundation from "The Secret Gardens of LFP Tour". Generous plant donations have been made by Wild Birds Unlimited of Lake Forest Park, Don Norman's Go Native nursery in Shoreline and from residents who find unplanned native plants on their property.

The Lake Forest Park Garden Club keeps our energy up by providing funds for snacks and beverages.

Out sincere "Thanks!" goes to the many volunteers and donors who have made such a great impact on the population of English Ivy at Grace Cole Park and along Perkins Way. We also thank the City of Lake Forest Park for hauling away any debris we drag to the roadside.

Plans are to re-visit all cleared areas on a regular basis to remove any remaining roots and re-starts. Monthly Saturday maintenance teams began on Saturday, July 23rd. An industrious group of 5 cleared debris from the spaces between the boards of the observation deck, pruned along the boardwalk, removed a large patch of Himalayan blackberries, roots and all, and cleared out some Reed canary grass.

If you would like to be part of the team to work at Grace Cole Park on Saturdays please contact Mamie at mamiejb@hotmail.com or 206-364-4410. The next scheduled event is August 20 from 9am to 12pm. No guilt should be felt for not being available for every event.

Grace Cole Nature Park Work Party
& Trail Opening Ceremony
Location: Grace Cole Nature Park
Date: Saturday, August 20th
Time: 9am - 12pm
Details: Some tools will be provided (loppers, pruners, shovels and tarps and gloves), but you may bring your own if you prefer. We'll be maintaining trails (some light shovel work and minor pruning), sweeping the board walk and cleaning the park sign. We may also cut, pull or dig some blackberries and do a follow-up in former Ivy eradication areas.

Special trail opening ceremony

At 10 o'clock there will be a ceremony where the Mayor will officially open the trails which the City contracted with the Volunteers for Outdoor Washington to construct. We will also have guided tours through the park for anyone who wishes to see or learn more about Grace Cole Nature Park, its vegetation and its habitat.

For more information, please contact Mamie Bolender, mamiejb@hotmail.com or 206-364-4410.

Join the Park Volunteers

The Park Volunteers Program will hold its third City-wide work party on Friday, August 26th, 2011

On July 23rd we weeded, cleared paths and did general light maintenance work at our parks. Volunteers worked at 4 parks. Drinks and great cookies were provided. Our second effort at Pfingst Animal Acres was extremely successful as you can see from the photos below:

Locations: Animal Acres/Eagle Scout, Lyon Creek, Blue Heron and Horizon View Parks
Date: Friday, August 26th
Time: 9am - 12pm
Details: Once again there will be a team leader in each park to oversee the work. Volunteers should bring gardening gloves and hand tools. Water and cookies will be provided.

For more information, please contact Linda Holman at lhholman@comcast.net.

Thanks to all the volunteers and to the City for providing tarps and removing the weed piles.

"Goat Days" were a huge success

We raised community awareness that got people to volunteer helping our parks. We received enough money to pay event expenses plus deposited several thousand dollars into our Park Fund. Perhaps most importantly, we watched families from all over Lake Forest Park and beyond coming together in a friendly, welcoming spirit. This, in spite of the weather, was a fun, rewarding weekend.

None of this could have happened volunteers. Folks took a shift at Albertsons over the three weekends we were there and for the two Sundays at the Farmers Market. The Sunday event at City Hall or at the event for the weekend required over 60 people volunteering to lend a hand making Goat Days a memorable event. The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation and the LFP Park Volunteers proved that citizens can accomplish good things for their city without City involvement or budgets.
