Greetings!

It has been a busy couple of months at the Stewardship Foundation. Here is just a sample of some of our activities:
  • Testified about the Blue Heron Park/Hamlin Bridge project before our City Council;
  • Monitored development proposals in our community;
  • Took steps to support the Cedarbrook preservation; (See article below)
  • Helped the salmon fingerlings find their way into our local streams with our Salmon in the Schools program; (See photos below)
  • Encouraged High School students to become environmental stewards by working with our organization and participating with North Cascades Wild;
  • Celebrated Earth Day with IVY OUT! work parties on April 21 and another on April 24.

We hope you had a chance to join these efforts, THANK YOU. If you haven't been able to join us yet, we hope you will in the near future.

Enjoy Springtime in Lake Forest Park,
Steve Plusch, President

On April 21st employees from the Environmental Protection Agency celebrated Earth Day by helping out at Grace Cole Nature Park. Thank you to Ed Kowalski and his co-workers at EPA for their hard work.
EPA volunteers and the fruits (ivy) of their labors. This group of gung-ho volunteers pulled HUGE amounts of ivy - the most of any group we've ever had.

All of these efforts at Grace Cole Park are made possible by a Wild Places in City Spaces grant from the King County Dept. of Parks and Natural Resources.

Salmon in the Schools Fingerlings Make Their Way Into
Lake Forest Park Streams

Before the release
adding the eggs
LFPSF Board Member Jean Reid explaining the process
adding the eggs
Over the past two weeks, students from Brookside, Lake Forest Park and Ridgecrest Elementary Schools have been releasing salmon fingerlings into our local streams.

After months of watching the development of these special species, each student took one or two of the fingerlings to the stream to wish them well on their way to Lake Washington.

A special thanks is in order to the three Stewardship Foundation Board Members who shepherded this program through the schools: Jean Reid, Kim Josund and Rick Purn.  We could not have done this without their enthusiasm and efforts.

Eveyone got to help.
Taking Turns

Cedarbrook Property Update

Several years ago the Shoreline School District expressed its intent sell 10.6 acre Cedarbrook Elementary School Property. The Board indicated they would be looking for the highest bidder for this effort.

As a result, community members of both Lake Forest Park and Shoreline came together to form The Coalition for the Preservation of Cedarbook.  They are a 501(c)3, non-profit organization.  The goal of this coalition is to purchase the property and develop it into an active neighborhood park, including restoration and preservation of the existing creek and wetlands.

This unique Coalition of neighbors, environmentalists and soccer supporter have followed the process carefully. They are working both to raise the money and awareness of this unique opportunity to keep this property in public hands. The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation is pleased to join forces with the Coaltion. Read our proclamation in support of these efforts

The Shoreline School Board has given the Coalition until August 2010 to present evidence of progress and support for the purchase of the property by both Cities.  As a result, the Coalition has asked for and recieved unanimously supported resolutions from both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park City Councils.  The resolutions promise to explore funding sources and to formally request an additional three years for this to be accomplished.

Time is running out. The Coalition is now in the process of urging both city councils to follow through on this promise.  Without the time extension, these promises will prove hollow.  More time is needed to accomplish the goal of preserving this property.

To find out what you can do to be involved and for more information please contact George Piano, Chairman at pianosr@aol.com or visit the Coalition website at www.savecedarbrook.org
THANK YOU

The Stewardship Foundation is so thankful for the support and encouragement we get from our members and local businesses.
A big THANK YOU to:

Wild Birds Unlimited of LFP and Greg and Eloise Armstrong and others in LFP and Shoreline for their donations of native plants for our restoration efforts;
Ace Hardware at Towne Center for the donation of work gloves for our volunteers;
Phyllis Hansen of Windermere Real Estate for donating sandwich boards for our IVY OUT! work parties;
The students, parents, teachers and staff of Lake Forest Park, Brookside and Ridgecrest Elementary schools for their support of Salmon in the Schools.
