What We're Reading
Is "formative assessment" just another buzzword or can it play a role in  transforming education into a more powerful and positive process? In Trans-formative Assessment, W. James Popham clarifies what formative assessment really is, why it's right for your school or classroom, and how to use this approach to improve teaching, learning, classroom climate, teacher professional development, and school performance.

Improving Student Learning One Teacher at a Time was written by Jane E. Pollock and published by ASCD in 2007.  This book examines the connections among clear learning targets, quality assessment and instruction, and the evaluation and documentation of student learning. Pollock presents specific examples for each area, and demonstrates applicability by including teacher reflections.

Connetquot Schools, Connetquot, NY
The Connetquot School District is
Angela Lalor located in central Long Island and is comprised of seven elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school.  For the last ten years, LCI consultant, Angela Di Michele Lalor, has facilitated a variety of initiatives,  aligning curriculum, instruction and assessment resources at the elementary and middle school levels. The district's most recent focus has been on the creation of multiple measures charts. These charts are tools used to show the connection between classroom assessments and the performance levels on a standards-based report card. They allow teachers to articulate the different types of assessments they use in their classroom, evaluate them appropriately, and show their relationship to the report card performance levels. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Peggy Staib and Angela Lalor will feature Connetquot's work with multiple measures at the ASCD Conference "Critical Transformation" in San Antonio, Texas in March.
