CAMPUS NEWS
EMPLOYEE TUITION ASSISTANCE
     The WVSOM Board of Governors approved a tuition assistance program to provide up to $2,000 per year to qualified employees seeking certifications, degrees and advanced degrees.
     The Board approved the plant at its June 26 meeting. Acting President Dr. Michael Adelman announced the plan during the Employee Celebration Luncheon on July 1.  
     Details will be announced in the coming weeks.
STUDENT NEWS
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
    Lindsey Davis, Class of 2011, recently received a $25,000 Tuition Assistance Award during the Southwest Regional Medical Center Auxiliary annual luncheon in Waynesburg, Pa. The award is presented annually to a resident of Greene County Pa. who is currently enrolled in medical school.

SUMMER CME SEMINAR WRAP-UP
     Nearly 140 alumni attended the 2010 WVSOM Summer Seminar June 16-19 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. 
     The WVSOM Foundation "Double Dollar Donors" campaign drew 45 donations from WVSOM alumni. Acting President Michael Adelmen, D.O., J.D., and his wife Cheryl Adelman, D.P.M, J.D., matched each donation up to $250. The campaign raised more than $20,000 for student scholarships during the seminar.      Several WVSOM Alumni spoke at the CME portion of the event. Dona Leskuski, D.O. (Class of 2002), Heather Ratliff, D.O. (Class of 2004), Dave Pucci, D.O. (Class of 2004), Adrienne Coopey, D.O. (Class of 2001), Jason Genin, D.O. (Class of 2007), Jim Lebolt, D.O. (Class of 2001), Mark Waddell, D.O. (Class of 1990), and Tom Asher, D.O. (Class of 1987), spoke in sessions.
     WVSOM faculty members David Beatty, D.O., Craig Boisvert, D.O., and Andrea Nazar, D.O., taught sessions. Clinical Evaluation Center employees Sabrina McKinney, Angie Amick and Teddy Hamrick also were on hand to demonstrate the WVSOM human patient simulators.

LIFE SAVING MEASURES
    Kevin Ragosta, D.O., Class of 1981, is featured in an episode of "Monster Inside Me" on the Animal Planet television network.
     The episode, called "Cold Blooded Killers," details how Dr. Ragosta saved the life of a nine-year-old boy who contracted encephalitis from the Acanthamoeba parasite after swimming in a lake. To learn more, visit the Animal Planet page on Discovery.com
     The often fatal condition was reversed after Ragosta induced a coma in the boy for 30 days and successfully treated the infection.
     Ragosta is a pediatrician in Syracuse, N.Y.
ADMISSIONS
SUMMER OPEN HOUSE
     The WVSOM Admissions Department hosted 45 prospective students and their guests during the institution's annual Summer Open House June 25.
     Prospective students from West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Michigan visited the campus during the event. Following a welcome message from Acting President Dr. Michael Adelman, the students were introduced to OP&P by Dr. Zack Comeaux followed by a tour of the Clinical Evaluation Center and the Anatomy lab.
     Students also participated in a networking session with faculty, students, admissions and financial aid staff. 
 
UPWARD BOUND
     The WVSOM Admissions Department welcomed 38 students from the Upward Bound program.
     The purpose of the visit was to educate the students about osteopathic medicine and WVSOM. They toured the Clinical Evaluation Center and saw a robot demonstration presented by Sabrina McKinney. Students also toured the Anatomy lab and took part in a program led by Bobbi Hoover, and an OMT demonstration by Dr. Zack Comeaux.
     Upward Bound , located on the campus of Concord University in Athens, W.Va., provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds with a goal of increasing the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
HUMAN RESOURCES
NEW EMPLOYEES
     Wayne Miller, Ph.D., is the new Director for the Center for Obesity and Related Diseases. He began work at WVSOM on June 28.
     Dr. Miller holds a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology from Utah State University and a Doctorate in Exercise Physiology from Brigham Young University.  Dr. Miller comes to WVSOM from George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he served as professor and chair of the Department of Exercise Science in the School of Public Health and Health Services. 
    
     Jill Cochran, MSN, RN-C, FNP, is a new faculty instructor in the Department of Clinical Sciences. She began work at WVSOM on July 1. 
     A nurse practitioner and educator for many years, Cochran is in the process of completing her doctoral education in clinical research with the West Virginia University School of Nursing in Morgantown, W.Va.  She has been an employee of the Robert C. Byrd Clinic for 10 years and was the first nurse practitioner hired by the RCB Clinic.
STATEWIDE CAMPUS
SWC ORIENTATION PROGRAM
     Year 3 orientation for the Class of 2012 students was held June 28-July 2 at WVSOM's six Statewide Campus sites in Princeton, Parkersburg, Charleston, Wheeling, Martinsburg and Huntington.
     The orientation program helps third-year students adjust to their new surroundings. Activities include presentations by WVSOM faculty and staff, RHEP officers, AHEC officers, and hospital staff and administration. Each region also held a welcome event for students and their families.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
COMPUTER DONATION
     WVSOM's Information Technology Department recently donated four computers to the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Beckley, W.Va.
     The computers will be used to provide Internet services for patients at the hospital. "For our veterans, it's a real morale booster to be able to stay in touch with family and friends while they are hospitalized," said Beckley VA Director Karin McGraw, noting the use of email and social networks.
     "The donation of computers by WVSOM was an excellent way to pay tribute to American's heroes and remind them that their sacrifices in defense of our nation have not been forgotten."

BREEDON BABY
     Chris Breeden and his wife, Sarah, welcomed Drew Casey Michael McCarthy Breeden last week. He was born June 29 weighing 9 lbs, 3 oz. and measuring 22 inches long.
WELLNESS NEWS
PILATES
     Pilates is a resistance exercise regime for all fitness levels. Pilates combines core exercises and stretching to sculpt muscles as well as improve posture, flexibility and overall stability.
     The class will be conducted July 8 from noon-12:45 p.m. Following this session, the class will take a hiatus until this Fall. Contact instructor Emily Boothe at eboothe@wvsom.edu for more information.

     The Carnegie Hall Ivy Terrace Concert Series on July 9 will feature musicians Barbara Martin and Mac Walter. This free concert begins at 6:30 p.m. at Carnegie Hall.
