Ventura City Council

Approves New Water and Wastewater Rate Structure

Ventura Water logoFollowing a May 21 public hearing, the Ventura City Council unanimously approved new water and wastewater rate structures and increases for the next two years.

If the Council votes to adopt the final ordinance on June 4, the rates will be effective July 4, 2012 and July 1, 2013. The funds generated by the new rates will primarily be used to renew Ventura's aging water and wastewater systems and replace aging pipes and facilities. The approved water rate structure includes water usage tier changes as well as higher service charges. The residential wastewater charge, set annually every July for the following year, will be calculated based on each customer's average winter water use. A separate "Estuary Protection" line item will also appear on wastewater bills to fund planning for a water reuse program.

A new Cost of Service study recommended restructuring and increases to establish more equitable and sustainable rates. The study process started in October 2011 and included input from a citizen Advisory Committee of Ventura residents and customers who attended the Committee's public meetings.

Whisenhunt Communications assisted Ventura Water in publicizing public meetings and getting the word out about the new study and rate structure changes. Info: myvtawater@cityofventura.net.

WC Creates Brochure for OUHSD's Transportation Academy

Whisenhunt Communications writer John Cressy and graphic artist Cindy Daly have created a six-panel brochure for the Oxnard Union High School District on its new Transportation Technology Academy at Channel Islands High School.

The academy, opening in the fall, is a "school within a school" that provides students planning careers in the automobile and airline industries as well as other transportation fields the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge and training while in high school.

Students who enroll will take specialized classes focusing on transportation and have access to computers, virtual textbooks, online factory repair manuals and other training aids. All equipment in the Transportation Technology Center is "Industry Standard," the same used in local shops.

The Transportation Technology Academy's is just one of several academy brochures WC has crafted for the Oxnard Union High School District in recent years.
