2nd Annual Freedom Run & Ride
The day of fun and athletic endeavor will be held at the Shorebirds' Stadium on September 29, 2012. The run/walk begins at 8 a.m. The timed races include a 5k and 10 mile run. The bicycle events are show and go from 7 - 10 a.m. The routes available are 25 miles, 62 miles and 75 miles. Athletes register for both a ride and a run. The Freedom Run and Ride supports the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, Miles for Melanoma and the Melanoma Research Center.  Sponsors the Delmarva Shorebirds, Toyota and Panama Jack have put together a great day with entertainment, food and post-race amenities. Refreshments will be provided as well as prizes for winners. An event tech shirt will be provided to all participants. Early registration is available until September 24th.

Chamber to Host Job Fair

Find your next employee at the 7th Annual Fall Job Fair, hosted by the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and the One-Stop Job Market. This year's job fair will take place on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Centre at Salisbury mall from 3:30 to 7:00 pm. Booths will be set-up throughout the main corridors. The event is open to any business seeking employees in the Lower Shore area. Booths are only $100 for a 10 ft. space. Again this year, the Resume Doctor will be on hand to offer advice and suggestions to applicants and evaluate their resumes. ChamberFest Logo 2012 
Sign up today for a booth at ChamberFest 2012 on Friday & Saturday, October 19 & 20 at the Centre at Salisbury. Chamber Fest is a business-to-consumer showcase that allows chamber members to display their products and services to the tens of thousands of people that visit the mall each weekend. Booths will be displayed throughout the mall directly in the flow of the busy weekend traffic.  Each booth will include a space of approximately 10 feet with a table and two chairs. Sign up before September 14th and save on your booth space.  The fee for the two-day showcase is only $200, after September 14th the cost is $225. Chamber Flower Sale

The Beautification Committee of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce has begun its fall flower sale. This is the 25th year that the organization has held this sale to help provide funds to establish and maintain landscaped triangles and other projects in Salisbury. Winter pansies must be pre-ordered and later picked up at the Chamber of Commerce Business Center on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. The cost of an individual 3.5" potted pansy is $1.40 and a flat of 18 plants is $25.40 (tax included). This year we will also offer variety packs of bulbs! Tulips - 7/ $5.00; Daffodils - 10/$5.00. (Prices include tax). Feel free to call and order your pansies at 410-749-0144. Order forms will be e-mailed to members within the next week.

Chamber Hosts Leadership Seminar - October 4

The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce will host a seminar entitled "Foundations of Leadership," presented by Joe Giordano of Consulting, Training & Development Services. The seminar will be held at the Chamber on Thursday, October 4th from 8:00 am - Noon. The seminar's primary theme will be to develop confidence in supervisory skills with an emphasis on leadership. Main topics that will be covered include:

 

-Management theories, concepts, and function

-Discussion and assessment of motivational leadership styles

-Traits of effective leaders

-Discussion of the art of delegation

MAC Offers Fitness Classes for the 50+ Adult
 Wednesday, September 19 is Falls Prevention Day. MAC will host an Open House for those who want to participate in the Tai Chi for Better Balance Class at 10:00 a.m. Spectators welcome. Entrepreneurs Invited to Get on the Bus and Celebrate Their Innovations and Businesses During the Pitch Across Maryland Tour

Startup Maryland is launching Pitch Across Maryland, a state-wide startup tour and business pitch competition. Taking place September 11 - 28, this two and a half week tour across the state will travel from the Eastern Shore to Western Maryland; from Cecil County to St. Mary's County; from the Baltimore Beltway and the DC Beltway -- and everywhere in between. The bus will travel the state to visit incubators, economic development agencies and universities-all in the name of celebrating entrepreneurship. At each stop, Startup Maryland will hold rallies sharing information about the incredible entrepreneurial resources across the state and within their region. Additionally, entrepreneurs will get coaching and support from business mentors and other leaders of Maryland's innovation economy.

Workshop to Guide Farmers Through Value-Added Grant Process

A free workshop that promises to make the way clear for potential value-added producer grant (VAPG) applicants is set for Saturday, September 15, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Center for Food Science and Technology, Room 1102, on the UMES campus.  Grant amounts up to $100,000 for planning and $300,000 for working capital will be awarded to successful applicants from a $14 million pot of money reserved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  The funding is earmarked to help agricultural producers enter into value-added activities related to the processing and/or marketing of bio-based value-added products. Fashion-ala-Tea

Meuse Ladies Auxiliary VFW #194 to host their 5th Annual "FASHION-ala-TEA" on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at their Post Home, 821 East  William Street, Salisbury. The event will begin at 2:00 p.m. and costs $10.00 per person.

Wor-Wic 5K Run/Walk 

The Wor-Wic Community College Foundation is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk, along with the 2012 Law Enforcement Team Cup Challenge, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 9 a.m., at the college campus on the corner of Route 50 and Walston Switch Road in Salisbury. Check in and registration begins at 8 a.m. The 5K run and one-mile walk are open to the public. The Law Enforcement Team Cup Challenge is open to employees of any law enforcement agency who will compete in teams of two to three runners for Law Enforcement Team Cup, currently held by the Salisbury Police Department. All 5K runners and law enforcement team members will be eligible for first place overall male and female trophies, as well as medals for the top three male and female finishers in eight different age categories. The first 100 registrants will receive an event shirt. All participants are invited to stay afterward for the awards ceremony, refreshments, music and fun activities for the whole family.The entry fee is $25 per person, or $35 per person after Sept. 19. "Drive Thru" Flu Clinic

Peninsula Regional Medical Center's "Drive-Thru" Flu Clinic is returning   on Thursday, October 4 and Friday, October 5, 2012 at Arthur W. Perdue (Shorebirds) Stadium at the intersection of Route 50 and Hobbs Road in Salisbury, Maryland.  Vaccinations will be administered to individuals 13 years of age or older.  A physician's order is not necessary.  A donation of $10.00 per vaccination is requested (cash only; exact amount is appreciated.) The Drive-Thru Flu Clinic will be conducted from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on both days.   Flu vaccinations are encouraged for persons over the age of 65, people with heart or lung disorders, immunosuppressant diseases or diabetes.  Participants are encouraged to wear a short sleeved shirt that will provide easy access to the upper arm.  For additional information, please call 410-543-7137 or 1-800-955-PRMC.

State "Living Wage" Rates Increase in September
The State Commissioner of Labor and Industry announced that wage rates payable on state service contracts of over $100,000 will increase by 3.4% effective September 28, 2012. With the enactment of "Living Wage" legislation in 2007, Maryland became the only state in the country to pay above market wages for service contracts. The CPI escalator in the legislation will boost the wage rates paid by service vendors performing state contracts to $12.91 per hour in the 6 metropolitan counties and $9.70 per hour in the remaining 18 counties.  Food for Fines - An Overdue Fine Amnesty Program

 

WHAT: Each non-perishable food item is worth $1.00

 

WHO:  Library members with overdue fines

 

WHEN: September 9-15, 2012

 Wicomico Public Library will be holding Food For Fines, An Overdue Fine Amnesty Program during the week of September 9-15, 2012.  Library members whose cards have overdue fines may donate non-perishable food items to clear their fines.  For each sealed, non-expired food bank donation brought in, the Library will mark $1 of overdue fines as paid.  All food items will go to The Joseph House foodbank.  Library members owing over $25 in fines may bring in 25 items and we will clear all remaining overdue fines.  All locations will accept donations except the Bookmobile.  

 

Local U.N. International Day of Peace Observance

Many different faith and community action groups will cosponsor the 4th annual, local observance of the U.N. International Day of Peace and Nonviolence (9/21), PEACE IN THE PARK, Chaired by Louis Rimbach.  It will be held 11:00 A.M.- 3:00 P.M., Saturday, September 22, 2012, in Salisbury City Park, across from Ben's Red Swings.  The theme is "Peace In Our Community. Peace In Our World." There will be children's activities, live music, drumming, informative tables and a peace walk.  All are invited to join in the celebration, bring a picnic lunch and canned good for the Maryland Food Bank, meet new and old neighbors, and enjoy peace related activities.

"A Taste of Delmarva" Benefits Meals on Wheels

MAC Incorporated, the Area Agency on Aging, along with LORA (Local Owner Restaurant Association) and The Village at Harbor Pointe in Salisbury will host "Taste of Delmarva" on Saturday, September 29, 2012. The event will take place at the Village at Harbor Pointe on Pemberton Drive in Salisbury from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Twenty restaurants and eateries will be represented offering samples of some of their most popular dishes. Advance tickets are $20 for Adults; $10 for youth ages 6-10 yrs. Tickets at the door will be $25 for Adults; $15 for youth ages 6 - 10 yrs. Children under 6 admitted free. Admission includes your food and entertainment with DJ Dennis Fox, Sunshine the Clown, McGruff the Crime Dog and a children's Fun House. The event will also include door prizes, and a 50/50 raffle. Get Ready, Get Set, Let's Vote

On Sunday, October 14 from Noon-4pm, there will be a voter preparedness class at the First Baptist Church at 528 Delaware Ave in the Family Life & Cultural Center. Questions like "Am I registered to vote," "How can I make changes to my current voter information" and questions about early voting will all be answered. College Week for Teens & Parents

August 31, 2012 - College Week atWicomico Public Library will be held during the week of October 1-5, 2012.  Teens and parents are invited to come to the Main Library Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. where we will cover the basics of the college selection process, financial aid, admissions, and getting the most out of college.  A College Fair will be held Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. near the Boscov's Stage in the Centre at Salisbury.   

Each registered participant will receive a gift bag from the Delmarva Education Foundation.  You may register online at www.wicomicolibrary.org, or by calling 410-749-3612.  No registration is required for the college fair.
