2nd Annual Freedom Run & Ride
The day of fun and athletic endeavor will be held at the Shorebirds' Stadium on September 29, 2012. The run/walk begins at 8 a.m. The timed races include a 5k and 10 mile run. The bicycle events are show and go from 7 - 10 a.m. The routes available are 25 miles, 62 miles and 75 miles. Athletes register for both a ride and a run. The Freedom Run and Ride supports the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, Miles for Melanoma and the Melanoma Research Center.  Sponsors the Delmarva Shorebirds, Toyota and Panama Jack have put together a great day with entertainment, food and post-race amenities. Refreshments will be provided as well as prizes for winners. An event tech shirt will be provided to all participants. Early registration is available until September 24th.

Chamberfest 2012
Sign up today for a booth at ChamberFest 2012 on Friday & Saturday, October 19 & 20 at the Centre at Salisbury. Chamber Fest is a business-to-consumer showcase that allows chamber members to display their products and services to the tens of thousands of people that visit the mall each weekend. Booths will be displayed throughout the mall directly in the flow of the busy weekend traffic.  Each booth will include a space of approximately 10 feet with a table and two chairs. Sign up before September 14th and save on your booth space.  The fee for the two-day showcase is only $200, after September 14th the cost is $225. Chamber to Host Job Fair

Find your next employee at the 7th Annual Fall Job Fair, hosted by the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and the One-Stop Job Market. This year's job fair will take place on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Centre at Salisbury mall from 3:30 to 7:00 pm. Booths will be set-up throughout the main corridors. The event is open to any business seeking employees in the Lower Shore area. Booths are only $100 for a 10 ft. space. Again this year, the Resume Doctor will be on hand to offer advice and suggestions to applicants and evaluate their resumes. Chamber Pansy Sale

The Beautification Committee of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce has begun its fall flower sale. This is the 26th year that the organization has held this sale to help provide funds to establish and maintain landscaped triangles and other projects in Salisbury. Winter pansies must be pre-ordered and later picked up at the Chamber of Commerce Business Center on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. The cost of an individual 3.5" potted pansy is $1.40 and a flat of 18 plants is $25.40 (tax included). Feel free to call and order your pansies at 410-749-0144. Order forms will be e-mailed to members within the next week.

College Student Discount Program
Through the College Student Discount Program, SU, UMES and Wor-Wic students can receive discounts and/or free gifts at over 80 locations. Students use their college ID as the primary validation for the discount or gift. New this year, students can easily access discounts through smartphone app Rovertown. Chamber Hosts Leadership Seminar - October 4

The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce will host a seminar entitled "Foundations of Leadership," presented by Joe Giordano of Consulting, Training & Development Services. The seminar will be held at the Chamber on Thursday, October 4th from 8:00 am - Noon. The seminar's primary theme will be to develop confidence in supervisory skills with an emphasis on leadership. Main topics that will be covered include:

 

-Management theories, concepts, and function

-Discussion and assessment of motivational leadership styles

-Traits of effective leaders

-Discussion of the art of delegation

MAC Offers Fitness Classes for the 50+ Adult
 Wednesday, September 19 is Falls Prevention Day. MAC will host an Open House for those who want to participate in the Tai Chi for Better Balance Class at 10:00 a.m. Spectators welcome.

Rotary Club Speaker: SU Director of Athletics

The Rotary Club of Salisbury is pleased to welcome to its Thursday, August 30 meeting Dr. Michael Vienna, the Director of Athletics and Recreation at Salisbury University.Under his leadership, the Salisbury University athletics program arguably has had the most successful era in school history. Sea Gull teams have a combined overall 69 percent winning percentage, garnered 16 team and five individual national championships, 155 Capital Athletic Conference championships and produced over 350 All Americans. The Rotary Club of Salisbury meets every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Rotary Scout and Community Center on Riverside Drive in Salisbury. Crohn's & Colitis Foundation - Fundraiser & Walk

On September 8, 2012 there will be a fundraiser at the Salisbury Elks Lodge from 12pm-3pm. Tickets are $10. Come prepared to enjoy music by Dave Corry, lite fare and a silent auction which closes at 2:15pm. Items included in the silent auction: wine baskets, LORA gift baskets, car detailing, items by Mary Kay, Vera Bradley and more!

 

On September 22, 2012, the Eastern Shore Crohns & Colitis Foundation will host a walk at Winterplace Park starting at 6pm.
 

Small Farm Bus Tour in Late August

A small farm bus tour offers a variety of educational stops over a two-day period in late August. Back by popular demand, the tour will allow participants to "Explore New Farm Income Opportunities," on Monday, August 27, and Tuesday, August 28. Tour participants will depart from the Richard A. Henson Center on the UMES campus at 7:30 a.m. sharp. The next 48 hours will provide them with many opportunities to experience successful and innovative farming ventures in Delaware and Pennsylvania and to explore alternatives and possibilities that will help the average farmer increase his or her bottom line and implement sustainable practices. The tour will end as the bus returns to the Henson Center around 6:30 p.m. on August 28. 2012 Master Gardener Intern Program

The program begins September 4 through November 20 on Tuesday from 1-4pm at the Ocean Pines Library. The cost is $160. Included in the cost is 40 hours of education, the Master Gardener manual and a binder with the fact sheets available from the University of Maryland and the Home and Garden Information Center. After you finish the training, you will be asked to volunteer 40 hours the first year and 20 hours each following year. Training Topics include: Ecology, Entomology, Lawn Care, Pruning, ect. Organic Chemistry Achievement Program

Dr. Miguel Mitchell, with 22 yrs experience as a chemistry professor, is offering an Organic Chemistry Achievement Program for anyone wanting to get a head start before taking organic chemistry in college. The introductory course is free. Creating Healthy Communities Online Program

Atlantic General Hospital, McCready Foundation and Peninsula Regional Medical Center have teamed up to partner with the Healthy Communities Institute (HCI) to offer an online resource of health and population data for residents of the Delmarva Peninsula, called Creating Healthy Communities.  Backed by research developed at the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard Medical School, the web-based Creating Healthy Communities is designed to help healthcare providers, hospitals, local health departments, community coalitions and policy makers gain important information about quality of life indicators in Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset and Sussex Counties.Residents looking to review the information on the new Creating Healthy Communities information may access it now at these locations: On the Peninsula Regional website in the Quick Links section to the right side of the page or www.peninsula.org/CHC, under the About Us drop down section of Atlantic General Hospital's web site or www.atlanticgeneral.org/creatinghealthycommunities or from McCready's homepage under the "Community" heading at www.mccreadyfoundation.org.

Summer Concert Series at Trap Pond State Park

Enjoy free concerts at Trap Pond State Park through Delaware State Parks' Summer Concert Series. The concert series presents a diverse lineup of family-friendly performances every Friday evening. Poplar Hill Mansion August Events

The Friends of Poplar Hill Mansion invite you to two fun events for August. On Thursday, August 23, from 5-7, Poplar Hill Mansion will host a historic Happy hour Wine and Cheese tasting. Celebrate our freedom on Sunday August 26 from 1-4, when Poplar Hill Mansion, hosts a War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. Experience history walking through Poplar Hill Mansion, believed to be the only house still standing in Salisbury from prior to the War of 1812. Wear period dress for more fun, have refreshments and enjoy the music of members of the Salisbury Symphony brass. This event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. Our current restoration projects are the historic smokehouse and our Joshua Thurston, Clementi pianoforte. If you would like to help feed the hungry in Salisbury, you may drop off nonperishable food items.

 

On September 9th, Sunday from 1-4, we welcome all Civil War Buffs for our Civil War Day. This is a free event and will include refreshments, $10.00 Carriage rides by R.T. Pulley Carriage services. His carriage was featured in a movie about the death of Abraham Lincoln. We will be "occupied" by Confederate and Union troops including Confederate Wes Jones of the of the 2nd. Co. Richmond Howitzers, Major Dale Foxwell and his men, local authors selling their books including Andy Nunez and Elaine Patterson of MD. History Press, Civil War collections by local collectors, and Sharon Walsh as artist Clara Gunby, Step back in time, and support our local re enactors ! Donations to Poplar Hill gratefully accepted.

5th Annual Golf Benefit for Parkinson's Research & Support

Sponsored by Royal Plus, the tournament will be held on August 31 at GlenRiddle Golf Club, Man O'War course. Registration starts at 12pm, tee off is at 1:30pm with a best ball format. It is only $140 per golfer to play and proceeds benefit the Lower Shore Parkinson's Support Group and the University of Florida Center for Movement Disorders. Red Cross Day at Jolly Roger

Red Cross Day at the Jolly Roger Amusement Park on Coastal Highway in Ocean City will be on Sunday, August 26, from 10 AM to 6 PM. For a $27.50 ticket in advance attendees can enjoy unlimited use of Splash Mountain from 10 AM to 6 PM, unlimited golf from 10 AM to 6 PM, unlimited amusement rides from 2 PM to 6 PM (limit two rides on the roller coaster), an activity area with water basketball and volleyball, two food stands, two ice cream gazebos, the sun deck with lounge chairs, and full bath and locker room facilities. This is a $60 value! Proceeds benefit the Lower Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross, which provides disaster relief, services to the military, and training in emergency skills to Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, Accomack, and Northampton Counties.  "A Taste of Delmarva" Benefits Meals on Wheels

MAC Incorporated, the Area Agency on Aging, along with LORA (Local Owner Restaurant Association) and The Village at Harbor Pointe in Salisbury will host "Taste of Delmarva" on Saturday, September 29, 2012. The event will take place at the Village at Harbor Pointe on Pemberton Drive in Salisbury from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Twenty restaurants and eateries will be represented offering samples of some of their most popular dishes. Advance tickets are $20 for Adults; $10 for youth ages 6-10 yrs. Tickets at the door will be $25 for Adults; $15 for youth ages 6 - 10 yrs. Children under 6 admitted free. Admission includes your food and entertainment with DJ Dennis Fox, Sunshine the Clown, McGruff the Crime Dog and a children's Fun House. The event will also include door prizes, and a 50/50 raffle.
