Fall Job Fair - Thursday, October 13, 2011

Find your next employee at the 6th Annual Fall Job Fair, hosted by the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and the One-Stop Job Market. This year's job fair will take place on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the Centre at Salisbury mall from 3:30 to 7:00 pm. Booths will be set-up throughout the main corridors. The event is open to any business seeking employees in the Lower Shore area. Booths are only $100 for a 10 ft. space. Tens of thousands of people visit the mall each day so this is a terrific opportunity to meet with many excellent potential employees. Again this year, the Resume Doctor will be on hand to offer advice and suggestions to applicants and evaluate their resumes.

The Beautification Committee of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce has begun its fall flower sale. This is the 25th year that the organization has held this sale to help provide funds to establish and maintain landscaped triangles and other projects in Salisbury. Winter pansies and bulbs must be pre-ordered and later picked up at the Chamber of Commerce Business Center on Friday, October 21, 2011. The cost of an individual 3.5" potted pansy is $1.50 and a flat of 18 plants is $25.00. This year we will also offer variety packs of bulbs! Tulips - 7 / $5.00; Daffodils - 10 / $5.00. "Taste of the Town" Young Professionals Event
 
The Young Professionals Committee of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce are hosting their annual "Taste Of The Town"  networking event on Thursday, October 6, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, at the Clubhouse at Rowen's Mill, located off of St. Luke's Road near the bypass in Fruitland. "Fall" Into Fitness This Autumn

As summer winds down and everyone settles back into their routine, Wicomico Recreation, Parks & Tourism offers several opportunities to stay active this Fall! New to the Good Beer Festival this year, Recreation & Parks will hold a Hangover 5K on Sunday, October 9. The race will begin at 11:30am and will lead runners through Pemberton Park's forests, meadows and wetlands. All participants will receive a t-shirt and a hot breakfast after the race. The registration fee for the Hangover 5K is $45 and includes admission to the Good Beer Festival on Sunday. Those interested in attending the festival on both days can do so for an additional $15. Before you gear up for your big Thanksgiving feast, come run the 3rd Annual Turkey Trek 5K on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 24. This marathon race will take participants along Pemberton's beautiful nature trails. Participants will receive a 5K race t-shirt and can enjoy healthy refreshments as well as pie and ice cream afterwards. (It is Thanksgiving after all!) Gift certificates and awards will be awarded to men and women in a variety of age groups and there will be a prize awarded to the participant in the best Thanksgiving costume! Small Farm Conference at UMES 

The 8th Annual Small Farm Conference, themed Sustaining Small Farms . . . 360 Degrees, has something in store for everyone. The two-day conference is scheduled for Friday, November 4, and Saturday, November 5, in the Richard A. Henson Center on the UMES campus. 

 

A pre-conference session begins at 2 p.m. on Friday evening. Participants may choose to learn the ins and outs of growing high tunnel raspberries and blueberries or to delve into what it takes to prepare for a GAPS\GHP audit. The evening ends with a reception and networking social.

Saturday sessions offer a wide range of information centered on income opportunities for woodland owners, ways to improve personal finance, how to establish a vineyard, using social media to generate more business, farmer safety and injury prevention, and more. A health and wellness track is new to the programming this year. Conference officials are working to support the farm family as well as the farmer. Exhibits, cooking demonstrations, and youth programming for children ages 5-13 will round out the day.

For the event, registration is $25 per person and $40 per couple. Registration is free for youth attending with parents. For youth who will not be accompanying a registered parent, registration is $10.

Buy, Sell and Trade Vendors Wanted

The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Salisbury University, hosts the annual buy, sell and trade market 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, October 7-8 in the parking lot of the museum. The market features an eclectic mix of fine antique decoys, collectible hunting items, folk art, antique furniture, and contemporary hunting, fishing and kayaking supplies. The market is one of several events held in conjunction with the annual Chesapeake Wildfowl Expo. Food will be sold in the parking lot. RPS ISG International Offers Free Seminar for Delmarva Volunteer Fire Departments

On October 12, 2011, from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM, local insurance agency, RPS ISG International will host a seminar entitled, "Insuring Your Volunteer Fire Company". The seminar will be co-hosted by ISG and VFIS Insurance, the largest provider of insurance, education and consulting services to fire departments throughout the United States.

 

Topics to be covered include "Driver Requirements", Emergency Vehicle Operations", "Fleet Policy Questions", "Personal Liability" and other insurance coverage issues. There is no cost to attend and the registration includes dinner and refreshments. Volunteer fire departments' Chiefs, Presidents and Trustees from across Delmarva are invited to attend this important seminar.

Shore Up Recruiting Foster Grandparents!

SHORE UP! Inc.'s Foster Grandparent Program is recruiting eligible, low-income senior citizens ages 55 and older to work with children/youth in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester Counties. Foster Grandparents work with children/youth in their community, serving as mentors, role models and friends. They also receive a tax-free stipend. HR Resource Group Holds Benefit Tourney for Women Supporting Women

Swing into action this fall at the Eastern Shore Society for Human Resource Management's golf tournament to benefit Women Supporting Women, a local breast cancer support and awareness organization. ES SHERM is holding the event in memory of Becky Schumaker, one of its former members.

 

The outing takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Rum Pointe Seaside Links in Berlin. For a $100 entry fee, golfers can enjoy 18 holes of play on the championship course, golf cart with GPS, range balls and an awards ceremony with a buffet. There will plenty of prizes, including a chance to win $20,000 toward a new car from Pohanka by making a hole-in-one and golf packages, and a 50/50 raffle too. Registration begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

 

Only a limited number of spaces are still available so register today. The registration deadline is Sept. 30. Ladies and mixed teams are welcome to play. The tournament will be held rain or shine.

 

Sponsors are still needed for the golf tournament too. Sponsor a hole for $100 or be even more generous and put your company's name on golf carts, the beverage cart, golfer gifts, the putting green or even the awards ceremony.
