Welcome Back College Students

It is that time of year again when the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce is asking area businesses to place on their marquees "Welcome Back College Students".  If you have a marquee, please welcome the incoming students and parents with this greeting from Friday, August 19 through Saturday, September 3, 2010. Thank you for your support of the 2011-2012 incoming College Students!

9-11 10th Anniversary Remembered

The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce with the assistance of the City of Salisbury are creating a place of remembrance, a memorial to the victims in New York City, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.  An avenue will be erected to honor the military, police, fire, medical and other personnel who are serving today, have served, and those who have paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom.

Community groups, organizations, churches and businesses may create signs, banners or displays in honor of the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.  The Chamber will place the offered signage along Carroll Street next to the Wicomico River for the people of our community to view as they drive by or stroll through the display area.  The displays will go up on September 3-4 and be removed after the Third Friday on September 16.

Cost of displaying your tribute will be $25 for non-profits, community groups, and religious organizations.  Businesses are asked to pay $50.  Applications are available from the Chamber.  The Display Committee reserves the right to decline posting offensive displays.

Historic Oyster Cannon on Display at The Delmarva Discovery Center

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pairs with the Delmarva Discovery Center to exhibit a historic cannon - a relic of the Oyster Police of the 1800s - from now until September 12. The cannon was used to protect the Chesapeake Bay's oysters during the "oyster wars" of the nineteenth century. The Delmarva Discovery Center has exhibits that highlight the Oysterman Culture of the Bay in the 1900's and the cannon adds a unique and tangible perspective on this turbulent period of time. For more information about the history of the cannon and the oyster wars, visit dnr.maryland.gov/mdconservationhistory/Oyster_Wars_Cannon.asp.

The Delmarva Discovery Center is open from 10am until 4pm, 7 days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. For more information please call 410-957-9933 or visit our website at www.delmarvadiscoverycenter.org.
