"Cooking, Baking & Dehydrating"
|
Since early November when my 92 year old grandma moved in, I've found myself back in the swing of reading recipes, shopping for the ingredients, heading to the
kitchen to cook. Hanging in the kitchen with grandma is something I've done since I was a little girl. She loves to tell the story of me phoning her when I was 6 years old to ask, "Grandma, how do you make white sauce?" She says she can still visualize me standing atop that chair I told her I had pulled up to the stove along with everything I needed to make white sauce, on the spot, with her instruction. Today, Grandma still gives me instruction. We're longer on the phone but I'm still at the stove as she sits in a chair and reads the recipe to me. We then taste test our creation into what we think is a gourmet dish. For me this is a dream come true, my grandma is giving me my latest cooking lesson right next to me, not over the phone.
Right after Christmas Grandma had a mild stroke. In the midst of the disruptions such an event brings to one's life I found myself drawn to the kitchen. I found it to be ultra grounding, meditative in fact, to be blending, baking, and dehydrating. I made soups, crackers, vegetable chips and mini cupcakes all gluten-free, of course. I couldn't believe in those first few days of her arrival back home I found any energy or time to think much less cook, bake and dehydrate. I knew I had to or I would lose all sense of what my intention for inviting her to live with me was in the first place: To provide a calm, loving space for grandma to live where she will feel and know she is loved and empowered to be herself, make independent choices and enjoy the remaining days of her life with joy.
As I was in the kitchen slowing myself to read a recipe, measure a spice and spoon batter, a nugget of wisdom came to me...
