Little Things Matter
Emma, my 2-year-old granddaughter, gave me a black eye this month. While visiting, she wanted to show me a book that was on the floor in her room. I squatted down to get a closer look, and suddenly, she waved the book in the direction of my eye. Ouch!! Ironically, the little book was called David and Goliath!!! Although it hurt a little, I didn't think it would leave such a huge mark. Made me think about some of the things we do that we don't think will leave much of an impression, but they do. It's the little mistakes that get noticed, but many of those positive things you do are appreciated by many, and they have a positive effect in many ways. A phone call, an act of kindness, a listening ear, words of wisdom, a helping hand, some empathy, a smile, a hug, some time, a small gift, or a willing spirit are all things that make a difference.
I have done some regrettable things in my life, but every now and then I am reminded that there are some little things I've done well. I once received this note on Facebook from a mom who was in my youth group years ago. She wrote... "I was excited to let you know how you and Vicki impacted my life--during a time when my own family was, from a teen's perspective, falling apart. The youth group was my respite. You never cared that my parents didn't go to that church or that I wasn't a member there. You never pushed me to talk about anything that I didn't want to talk about, but you did create a safe place where I knew that I was loved, by God and by my leaders. I remember Vicki participating in a Bible study with some of us girls at the time, and she was my prayer accountability partner for a while. When I was questioning just about everything, she was so wonderfully wise and listened, prayed, and encouraged me to pray. I have never forgotten the two of you, and I often still thank God for you both and for the influence that you both had on my life. I have been involved with the youth at our church now in various ways for the past 16 years. Currently, I co-lead our 11th/12th grade girls small group, and now I often find myself in the position to just listen and encourage. I pray that the time I spend with these girls will bless them in some small way as you both were such a blessing to me. I'm sure I never thanked you at the time, but thank you both for the time, prayer, and energy you put into our youth group. And thank you for your influence in my life. It made a difference."
Don't forget that everyday you are making an impact, good or bad. Spend your time well and remember, God is watching. "Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.'" Luke 16:17
Little things matter. Don't underestimate the impact, no pun intended... well maybe.

Juan Carlos, Dennis, Jim, Pastor & Wife
Nicaragua Trip

In July, Jim Smith and Dennis Mohler, Associate Pastor from Calvary Baptist in Whittier, were invited to travel with George Loring of Missions Doors to see the work that is going on in Nicaragua and Central America. On their trip, they met church planters and leaders including Juan Carlos Reyes and his father, Rigo Reyes. These men have been instrumental in training pastors, planting churches, and reaching out into the local communities with the gospel. There are over 350 churches that they have been ministering to, and CB Southern California is working to assist them through our mutual connection with CBGlobal.

One Victim's Story: Aurora Shooting Miracle

by Brad Strait

As a church pastor in Denver, I have worked as a chaplain with several police and fire departments. I was privileged to counsel parents just hours after the Littleton Columbine shootings.

However, in this new tragedy at the Aurora Theater Dark Night shooting, one of the victims was a 22-year-old woman from my church, Petra Anderson (pronounced Pay-tra). Petra went to the movies with two young friends who are biking across America. You and I have been inundated with news about what happened next....read the rest of the story

Other articles on the tragic shooting are on this site as well.

60 Ways to Lose Weight
ed stetzer
Ed Stetzer is an author, speaker, researcher, pastor, church planter, and Christian missiologist. Several years ago he changed his lifestyle and lost over 100 lbs. Look below to read his blog. Also, since studies have shown that Christians eat a little too much, we thought we would give you some ideas on how to lose some weight and take care of that temple of the Lord you have. An online story tells of a friend who found he had put on a little too much weight. That day, he gave up his beloved soda. He was only drinking two or three bottles a day, but over the course of six months, he dropped those 20 pounds. It was a small change to his lifestyle -- no big deal, really. And yet, it had a massive impact on his health and his body. (No surprise: Drinking calories is one of the 20 Habits That Make You Fat.)
