Founding Fathers
|
It can be easily demonstrated that a very high percentage - in fact, the overwhelming majority - of Founding Fathers were Christians, but certainly not all of them were. Today, citizens are regularly told about the lesser religious Founders (such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine), but hear nothing about the prominent Christians among the Founders (for example, 29 of the 56 signers of the Declaration held what are today considered seminary or Bible school degrees, and many others of the signers were bold and outspoken in their personal Christian faith

FREEDOM
I recently sat down with a missionary who said that every time she returned to the USA, she felt like she was in heaven. Of course, heaven is so much better than we can imagine, but I was again amazed at hearing what some of our fellow brothers and sisters go through as they live their Christian lives. In Pakistan, they live in ghettos with sewage running through the streets, tarps for walls and a roof, but because of this, they are free to worship without regular persecution. In other places, Christians have constant threats and arrests because of their faith, yet they continue to share the word. In Yemen, it is just plain illegal to talk about Jesus, yet they talk. In Djibouti, the children grow up mostly without parents, unruly, undisciplined, yet Christians reach out to them, sometimes without much appreciation. We have much to appreciate about our country.
Our freedom is sometimes unappreciated and often ignored or abused. Sure, it's far from perfect. Perfection will only be in heaven. However, when I hear from others, and even when I myself return back to the good old USA, I appreciate what we have here. Take some time to thank the Lord for what we have on, what talk show host Michael Medved says is, "this greatest nation on God's green earth ." I don't think he is a believer, but he knows what a privilege it is to live here. We need to remember how good God has been to us. It's not about us, but about what God has given to us. Samuel reminded the Israelites to "think of all the wonderful things he (God) has done for you." (1 Samuel 12:24 NLT) Don't forget to thank the Lord for what we have here in America.
Happy Birthday, America.

Santa Ana Celebration |
On Sunday, June 24, Iglesia del Buen Pastor in Santa Ana celebrated the completion of their church's interior renovations. Over the last 14 months, the church has done all the work through the volunteer efforts of their members and completed it debt-free! Over 250 were in attendance to join in the celebration, including Jim and Vicki Smith. New interior paint, stages, bathrooms, tile flooring and walls, carpet, chairs to replace the pews and more. Great job and congratulations to Pastor Marco and Blanca Cueto. Next on their list, the exterior! |
Sunrise Beaumont Buys Building |
The Sunrise church plant in Beaumont has completed escrow on a church building in Beaumont. Sunrise Rialto planted this church in 2010 and has been meeting at the Sundance Elementary School in Beaumont, CA. Each week, they bring in their own state-of-the-art sound system and video projection system. Now they will have their own building with fully equipped children's spaces and nurseries. Pastor Doug Story is the campus pastor in Beaumont and is looking forward to having their own space. |
Supporting Mission Opportunities |
China: Missionaries from China are now sharing the gospel in the Middle East, Africa and Asia! They work in intense circumstances and have to be very sensitive to the cultures they are in, and yet, they are accepted in places most westerners would never be allowed. Jim Smith had the opportunity to hear about this tremendous ministry and would encourage you to get some more information and see if you would be able to support this exciting and transforming ministry. Senegal
WorldVenture Missionaries Dave and Denise McCarthy are evangelizing abandoned beggar boys on the streets of Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. Following an ancient Islamic tradition, families give their little boys away to live at a school far from home and learn Islam. Today, many of these schools are corrupt and little teaching occurs. Instead, the boys (age 3 to 15) are forced to beg on the streets for money for their teacher, under threat of severe punishment for failing to turn in enough money each day. These little boys have been abandoned by their families and live tragic lives filled with abuse, fear, and despair. They are malnourished, uneducated and unloved by society. Operating a drop-in day center in one of the ghettos of Dakar, Senegal, the McCarthys minister to up to 70 boys each day. It's a "Show-and-Tell" ministry: telling the boys about God's love and then showing God's love in action by providing meals, showers, laundry, medical care, literacy training, fun and love - all in the name of Jesus. They are also planning for a future residence for former street boys. For more information, contact Dave & Denise McCarthy, WorldVenture missionaries at denise062577@yahoo.com. They need only $500 per month to get back to the field. Dave and Denise's WorldVenture Page |
Church Planting |
CBAP (Conservative Baptist Association of the Philippines) hopes to have planted hundreds of churches by 2025, in fact, they hope to have 2,025 churches in the Philippines by that year. It is an ambitious goal, but they are working hard to accomplish it. We in Southern California are inspired to continue to refocus our efforts in church planting. We have two new churches that started on Easter and several more that were planted a few years ago. Other churches in our association have also planted or started new campuses: New Song Community in Oceanside has their Inland HIlls campus; Sunrise in Rialto started their High Desert Campus; and Whittier Hills Baptist started their Uptown Campus. We look forward to doing even more with recruiting, assessing, starting, coaching and encouraging new church plants. |
Church Plants |
Inglewood Rev. Geovanny S. Barrantes, from our CB Spanish-speaking church Iglesia Cristiana Amanecer of Inglewood, wrote to us that they just inaugurated a new building, have an average of 225 in attendance per weekend, and have recently had 60 salvations and 10 baptisms! This church started in 2007.
East LA Pastor Al Galvan is leading New Life Christian Fellowship which started in 2006. They are currently renting meeting space at Grace Baptist Church in Montebello with close to 40 attending--near to maximum capacity of their rental room. Their mid-week Bible Study was at their home, but with 30 attending, they now have to find another place.
San MarcosMission 316 Church started this year. Pastor Sam Brumit is seeing an increase in attendance almost every week. On June 3, they had over 80 in attendance and 7 were baptized that afternoon. They are meeting at the San Marcos Senior Center. CB is helping them with their monthly rental cost as they get started.
Oxnard
CB is also financially helping Pastor Shaun Garman and Seed Church with the rental of their building as they get going with their new plant which currently meets in Santa Paula. Shawn appreciates the prayer and support that he receives from CB Southern California and his sending church in CB Northwest. San Juan Capistrano Pastor Brett Clifford continues to lead Creekside Bible Chapel while they meet in the Alcoholics Anonymous building in San Juan Capistrano. Brett also has a full-time job in running his own window cleaning business, www.brettswindowcleaning.com/.

David Sunukjian Resigns |
On May 31, Pastor David Sunukjian resigned from Redeemer Church in La Mirada after 6 years of faithful service. He wrote, "For the last year or so I've been dealing with a slowly-expanding crisis of faith.....The Elders at Redeemer, who are also my dear friends, have faithfully walked with me along this entire process. Together, we have come to the conclusion that it is best for me to resign my position as elder/pastor at Redeemer Church...We do not know what the future holds. For the first time in my adult life I will be looking for a job outside the church....there is hope and even a certain curiosity to see what the future holds." May God bless David and his family on this next chapter in his life. CB has contacted the church and they are currently well prepared to lead Redeemer for the near future. |
Worship Pastor Questions to Ask |
Pastor Greg Atkinson is Campus Pastor at a multi-site church and they are beginning the process of searching for a Worship Pastor. This reality, coupled with his own experiences as being a Worship Pastor and having been interviewed several times, has led him to this list of questions that he will be asking in his own search for a Worship Pastor. He writes in this article at xpastor.org, "Please understand: I don't think this list is complete or exhaustive-it's just a start." See the list |
Summer Music Festivals |
CB Chaplain and Founder of RYFO, Nick Greenwood is reaching into the Music Industry. Here is his recent update...
Festivals are designed for music listeners to consume music by the truck load. Multiple stages are timed to allow crowds to come and go in waves with the start of another band's set. We go from stage to stage until our ears bleed, our feet hurt, or we collapse because we forgot to drink enough water. We carefully outline what bands we can see based on stages and set times, and do our best to not miss our favorites. There's an art to it that I'm personally not good at. I try. Most of us can get so focused on 'consuming' all the music that we can, that we miss incredible opportunities to 'produce' life in the musicians themselves. Granted, many of us make valiant efforts to thank or encourage musicians we see walking around the festival grounds, but often miss the mark in doing so. Sure, musicians appreciate hearing "thank you", or "you guys killed it today." But to be honest, most of those accolades get put in the 'bank of praise' that has lost it's sparkle.
What if?
What if instead of mustering up enough courage to walk up to the merch table and thank a band for their music or their "ministry"; or instead of striking up the "how's tour" conversation they've had 400 million times before, we ask the band, "is there anything I can do for you," or "anything I can get you," or "anything I can pray for?" What if the life of Jesus was produced inside of musicians this Summer, by us. By you! May we be a people who reflect and communicate the Good News of Jesus this Summer, in word and deed. May we change what it means to be a fan, to the glory of God.

Obesity, Churches and Baptists |
Fox News recently published an article on obesity and the church. Church members and Pastors seem to eat too much compared to the rest of the nation. "A potentially larger crisis is looming in the pews of churches across America. In fact, statistics suggest that the church today may indeed be in worse condition than the general population. A 2006 Purdue study found that the fundamental Christians are by far the heaviest of all religious groups led by the Baptists with a 30% obesity rate compared with Jews at 1%, Buddhists and Hindus at 0.7%.

Southern Baptist Alternative Name |
The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination, has approved an alternative name that will allow churches to distance themselves from the organization's past ties to slavery and racism. Great Commission Baptists, the alternative name, was endorsed by 53 percent of the 4,800 ballots cast at the convention's annual meeting in New Orleans, officials announced Wednesday. read more
