There is a story about a prominent Christian pastor and leader who began to receive threatening phone calls and letters. Fear began to paralyze him. He had a defining moment one night with just him and God."It seemed as though I heard...an inner voice, saying, 'Stand up for righteousness, stand up for truth. God will be at your side forever.' Almost at once my fears began to pass from me. ..the outer situation remained the same, but God had given me inner calm.

Three nights later our home was bombed. Strangely enough, I accepted the word of the bombing calmly. My experience with God had given me new strength and trust. I know now that God is able to give us the interior resources to face the storms...of life." Martin Luther King Jr.

Want a job that pays well; get divorced; feel helpless in dealing with the problems of life; lack any clear goals or sense of direction; accept authority of church leadership; feel prepared for a vibrant religious and spiritual life; marry young.

least likely to:

Want a job that is directly helpful to others or is worthwhile to society; spend much time volunteering or going on mission trips; be involved in political campaigns.

Boundaries
poolWe almost had a tragedy at our house over the weekend. After the first women's retreat, all the family, with their extended family members, met at our home for the "baby reveal" party. This is not the tragedy. We love having people at our house. We had two cakes with either blue or pink frosting in the middle, announcing the coming of a boy (blue) or girl (pink). Ashley and Eric are having another girl and Emily and Nick are having another boy. Congratulations to my kids!! So, on with the story. The almost tragedy is that we have a pool in the backyard and lots of little kids running around. Can you see what is coming? Fortunately, Eric's dad, a firefighter, heard a splash, and quickly ran out to the pool to grab the little one up out of the pool. Close one! We immediately surrounded the pool with a makeshift wall, making it inaccessible to toddlers. Boundaries are not what everyone likes, in fact, the people who owned our home before us took the fence out, probably cause the kids where older; and who wants a fence blocking the patio area? Boundaries, however, are good. Lanes on the freeway, rpm's on an engine, sexual interaction among unmarried people, etc. God gave just one to Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:17). They are for our benefit, safety, health and good will. And, just like Adam and Eve, we rebel against what we shouldn't do. Sometimes we push those boundaries, but be careful not to go too far, or you might just have a tragedy in your life that could have been avoided.

Time to Sign Up for Men's Retreat
mensOctober 14-16
There is still room for men to sign up for our CB Men's Retreat this year. Men tend to wait until the last possible moment to sign up, so now is that moment. 72 and Going Strong
jim and IvanJim had the privilege of visiting Pastor Ivan Voster who is 72 and going strong. He has been the Senior Pastor at Goleta Valley Church for five years and also serves as the full-time chaplain at the Santa Barbara jail. Five years ago, he walked in to offer his help at the church, and they soon asked him to be their Pastor. They now regularly have 110 in their worship service, which used to barely reach 50, with a strong number of students. They have a part-time youth director and music leader, with a full band leading worship every Sunday. goleta bandThey even have a new youth band leading two special songs with the Angklung, a bamboo instrument from Indonesia. It sounded great!  Pray for Ivan as he leads this church, ministers at the county jail and is the full-time care giver to his wife Lynn.
Women's Retreats in Full Swing
womens retreat
Vicki Smith at Chapel
About 520 women will attend this year's two English retreats up at Pine Summit. The first weekend was a huge success and the second retreat is sold out for the first weekend of October. There is room for those wanting to go to the Spanish women's retreat, October 7-9. Women from all over came to hear Vicki Smith speak on Abiding in Christ along with many other seminar speakers and workshops leaders. They also participated in a host of activities. "Encouraging and Refreshing" was a comment from one grateful attendee.
Japan Team Getting Ready to Go
john houletteOn Sunday, WorldVenture Missionary to Japan John Houlette, will meet with the Japan Team for an orientation meeting at San Antonio Heights Community Church in Upland. The team consists of: 16 people--7 men and 9 women, ages 18-64; 2 nurses; a lawyer; 4  pastors; a graphic designer; an engineer; a clerk; a student; plus housewives and directors. Pastor Dennis Mohler, Phil Waters, Dave Romero and Jim Smith are on the team. The team will be traveling in three different groups, visiting different churches and assisting in whatever these churches need. Janet Brown is one of our coordinators in Japan, working with WorldVenture and Delta Ministries. We look forward to encouraging those who God brings our way and the lessons we will learn while there. The group leaves LAX on Friday, October 21, returning Tuesday, November 1.
Traveling Plans
jimvickuiLike many of you, Jim and Vicki have had and will continue to have, a busy fall season. They've been planning and speaking at retreats, churches and Pastor gatherings. Jim and Vicki will be leading our CB mission trip to Japan. Following the mission trip, they will speak and lead a Family and Marriage Conference at our CB churches in Honolulu and Guam and as well as visit and speak at a church in Nanning, China. Jim will represent CBAmerica at the CBGlobal conference in Macau, China before returning back to the USA just before Thanksgiving. Fortunately, there are days in between all this to rest, but they are glad for all the opportunities to encourage and share God's Word. They think of Paul when he writes, "making the most of every opportunity, for the days are evil." Ephesians 5:16. They will appreciate your prayers as they travel.

Valley Bible has 19,883 square feet, including nine offices, five to eight classrooms, work room, multi purpose room, break room, conference room, cry room, and coffee bar. The church is situated between Palomar Junior College, the largest junior college in the nation and San Marcos State University.

Hope Again Needs Food

hope againPastor Jon Barta from Valley Baptist in Burbank is looking at an empty cupboard at Hope Again. Directed by Ross Lokken, Hope Again is a non-profit, faith-based ministry serving the poor, homeless and disenfranchised in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles. There is an URGENT NEED. The Food Pantry is almost EMPTY. The needs have increased by over 40% since last year. Will you please make this need known among the people of your church? We need non-perishable canned goods. CBSC wants to hear from Pastors
surveyOur board continues to focus on how we can help  churches stay relevant.  How do we train churches to have strong Elders and Leadership Teams? How do we continue to plant churches that will last? How do we encourage churches to be missional in their communities? What partnerships can we forge to become more effective in ministry? Good stuff. We also want and need some feedback from Pastors. Later this month, Pastors will receive a packet with a survey from focusondecisions, a professional firm we are using to help gather information. Your cooperation is essential. "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." (Proverbs 15:22). This year's CB Board of Directors: Pat Cottrell, Pastor, Huntington Beach; Chris Gillespie, Pastor, Apple Valley; Gary Golike, Pastor, Fallbrook; Rolman Mazariegos, Pastor, Santa Barbara; Dave Metzger, Pastor, Lake Elsinore; Sam Petitfils, Operations Pastor, Rialto; Pol Pili, Pastor, Long Beach; Jim Smith, CBSC Executive Director, Upland; and Sam Williams, Associate Pastor, Rancho Cucamonga.
Don't hesitate to call us for more information at 909-944-5900.

We are happy to help!
