In his Turning Point Daily Devotional for June 21, 2005, David Jeremiah points out that sin always has unintended consequences. Take the Seattle man, for example, who tried to steal gasoline from a motor home. Attaching a siphoning hose to the vehicle, he started to work; but police found him shortly afterward writhing in agony in the street. Seems he had attached the hose, not to the gasoline tank, but to the motor home's sewage tank! The owner declined to press charges; he was too busy

Two More!
My wife, Vicki, and I found out that two of our daughters are pregnant! They seem to share the pregnancy experience at the same time. They both had their first child within five months of each other; now they are four weeks apart. It was contagious to see the excitement they each had as they shared this good news with us, family members, friends and church family. Some cried with joy, others had their eyes widen with "what did you just say" and some hugged and congratulated the lucky parents. Sharing good news is fun. It was so hard for us, then, to keep this secret while they told other people. We wanted to tell everybody which, obviously, I continue to do now. It's kinda like the good news of another baby, Jesus. As Paul wrote, "That is why the Scriptures say, "How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!" Romans 10:14 NLT. Keep sharing the good news while we have time. It really is the best news of all.
Enjoy reading our newsletter...and I am really excited about our upcoming Christmas Banquet, which is right after Thanksgiving. I hope you all will come!
Sincerely,
Jim Smith

Latino Leadership Luncheon Well Attended
On Saturday, July 23, approximately 80 leaders from CBSC Spanish-speaking congregations gathered at Primera Iglesia Bautista in Montebello, at the facilities of Montebello Christian Fellowship. They came to network with one another and encourage attendance at many of the upcoming Spanish events like the Spanish Fall Retreats, the Christmas Banquet, and the Summer Sport Events and Picnic. A short message from Pastor Josue Duran, Pastor of Primera Iglesia Bautista, encouraged them in their dedication of sharing the good news in their communities. Felix Valdelamar, CBSC's Volunteer Spanish Ministries Director, did a great job as Master of Ceremonies. |
60th Anniversary in Port Hueneme
A packed auditorium helped First Baptist Church celebrate their 60th anniversary on Sunday, July 24. Jim Smith took this picture while preaching. He was among several special guests invited to participate in this celebration. Even the mayor of Port Hueneme, a believer, showed up for the occasion, helping them dedicate a new pre-school they were opening. First Baptist also runs the Hueneme Christian School. Pastor Joven and his wife, Perla, have been at the church for 15 years! Pastor Joven is also the school administrator. A fine banquet followed the church service with plenty of good food, games, a Filipino dance by some senior members, and good music. Congratulations to FBC!

Campus Crusade for Christ Name Change
Campus Crusade for Christ International (CCCI) is embarking on a nine-month mission to change its name to Cru, years after its founder, Bill Bright, wondered whether the evangelistic ministry should alter the brand. In a July 19, 2011 press release, they said, "The new name will be adopted in early 2012. The U.S. ministry hopes the new name will overcome existing barriers and perceptions inherent in the original name." It's already a popular shorthand for the ministry, though other evangelicals often call it simply "Crusade," the half of its name that has caused it problems overseas. The word carries connotations to the Crusades, military conquests by European Christians intended to reclaim the Holy Land from Muslims in the 11th to 13th centuries. read whole article

The 193rd Country in the World
After 5 decades of war and over 2 million deaths, Southern Sudanese celebrate their first independence day in the capital city of Juba on Saturday, July 9, 2011. The southern Sudanese opted for secession during a popular referendum in January 2011 in which southern Sudanese, who are mostly Christian, voted overwhelmingly to secede from the mainly Muslim and Sudanese Arab north. Saturday's declaration and recognition makes the Republic of South Sudan the world's 193rd country. more |
Church Policy Recommendations
Professional Football Quarterback Brett Farve got in trouble sexting. Texting is the common way of communicating with many young people. Some send graffic pictures to others. What would you do if you discovered that members of your youth group are involved in sending or receiving inappropriate text messages? It could be a youth group member who sends a message to another young person, or even to a youth volunteer or pastor. What if your youth pastor were involved in sending the message? Or, what if a young person wrongfully accused your youth pastor of sending an inappropriate message? There are ramifications, both legal and otherwise, associated with each of these scenarios. As with other situations that pose risk to a ministry, your church should talk about issues like inappropriate text messaging or sexting and establish written policies and guidelines designed to prevent it from happening-or at the very least know how to respond if it does. read the whole article |
New Zealand Missionary Support Needed
Todd and Donna Funk serve on the North Island of New Zealand. I had the privelege of meeting Todd, who speaks to students of all ages throughout New Zealand on Christianity. He is able to get into schools, univeristies and camps. He spends two weeks several times a year with kids at "Survival Camps." These are camps for foster kids and orphans that the government will send to the Children's Bible Ministries camps. Some kids have never even heard of Moses, David or Jesus. He has a great presentation called, " The Darwin Delusion," which is filled with humor, fast paced media and makes all who heard him seriously consider Christianity. Todd was saved at Sunrise Church in Rialto and is supported by Sunrise in his efforts to evangelize people in New Zealand. Please consider supporting this strong ministry in New Zealand. To contact Todd and Donna Funk, write to them at toddfunk1@gmail.com or donnafunk@gmail.com. For more information, you may read their newsletter or check out their mission page. |

Death Sentence for a Pastor
Sobering reminder that there is a price for our faith. More Christians die these days for their faith than ever before. Iran's Supreme Court says an evangelical pastor, Yousef Nadarkhani, charged with apostasy can be executed if he does not recant his faith.
