Seemingly Effortlessly
| Jackson and Emily |
Moms do a lot, seemingly with ease. Really, watching babies and toddlers is exhausting. My daughter, Emily, after her little Jackson was born, wondered if she would be exhausted for the rest of her life. My wife handled our 4 kids well, and it seems to have rubbed off on our daughters. Emily and Ashley each have a baby and have learned to multi-task well and maintain a good balance of energy.
Recently, my two sons-in-law had to watch their | Eric and Emma Durso - Nick and Jackson Greenwood |
kids while my daughters were away at some meetings. This was their first time watching their kids all by themselves, and they were nervous. My daughters, the smart young moms that they are, called and asked if the boys could stay at our house while they were at a meeting with Vicki and some other women. Like most grandpa's, I jumped at the chance. All of us shared the babysitting duties and made it through the day. Eric was watching his 8-month-old daughter, Emma, and Nick was watching his 1-year-old boy, Jackson. The new dads did well, but constantly watching their little ones wore them out. Taking walks, feeding the babies, changing their diapers, playing games with them, making them smile, looking forward to nap time, more changing of diapers, more feeding times, trying to figure out what they were saying, following them around the house, and holding them when they cried, tired out my two young and strong sons-in-law. They were exhausted by the time Ashley and Emily arrived home to rescue them. |

This little experience caused both men to appreciate, even more than they did before, all that these young moms seem to do effortlessly every day. "So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy." (Proverbs 23:25 NLT) To all of those moms like my two daughters, thank you for all you have done and continue to do. We men stand amazed. Happy Mother's Day!

Let us continue praying for our affected churches in Japan that they may shine as light to those around them. Pray also for the Japanese people that this recent experience might bring them to seek for the one and only true God. Pray that they may encounter the living Christ in their lives. Drop-Side Cribs Outlawed
Church nurseries must replace drop-side cribs |
In order to comply with new safety regulations taking effect on June 28, churches need to replace their nursery cribs, which could already pose a danger to children and leave churches open to liability lawsuits. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission unanimously approved sweeping new safety rules, which outlaw drop-side cribs and require stronger hardware and supports. Around for decades, drop-side cribs have come under scrutiny in recent years because of malfunctioning hardware, sometimes cheaper plastics, or assembly problems that can lead to the drop-side rail partially detaching from the crib. When that happens, it can create a dangerous "V''-like gap between the mattress and side rail where a baby can get caught and suffocate or strangle. Since 2000, drop-side cribs have been blamed in the deaths of 32 infants and toddlers and suspected in another 14 fatalities. In the past five years, more than 9 million drop-side cribs have been recalled, and Congress has pushed for stronger crib safety rules. read more |
Recovering from the Post-Easter Blues
What to do after the Easter rush? |
Pastor Hal Seed, Lead Pastor at New Song Community Church in Oceanside, writes a blog with some suggestions of what church leaders can do. One suggestion is not to take a vacation. He writes, "The most critical time for leadership isn't on the mountaintop, it's in the valley. A leader's finest moments come when the troops are down, not up. Picture Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings when the hordes of Mordor are surrounding his men. He shouts, "Someday the strength of men may fail, but it is not this day!" Or Coach Boone in Remember the Titans, when the boys are being ripped apart by racial tension. He leads them on a pre-dawn run through Gettysburg. Great leaders rise up when momentum is waning." Borders Bankruptcy Affects Christian Books

According to Christian Retailing, Zondervan is owed $1.9 million by the company and is one of Borders' top 20 creditors. Other Christian publishing creditors include parent companies of Multnomah, FaithWords, and Howard Books. Surgery Scheduled for John Redman
Prostate Cancer Diagnosed |
Former CB Southern California Executive Director John Redman was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. When the pathology report on the biopsies came back, it was confirmed that the cancer was moderately aggressive and it would be necessary to treat it appropriately. The Urologist strongly recommended the da Vinci robotic surgery for the complete removal of John's prostate gland. There is only one of these amazing systems in Ocala and it is always booked ahead for several weeks. John is now scheduled for the surgery on May 31st, at the Munro Regional Medical Center in Ocala. Pray that this surgery goes well and that John's recovery is swift and complete. John and his wife, Anne, are living in Ocala, FL. |

| Trend-Setting |
Bert Downs shared at the April RED's (Regional Executive Directors) meeting in Fontana, WI about a US Airways article he read about the "14 most trend-setting Restaurants in the US." He brought out the fact that these restaurants have four commons traits:
1. A Chef you can trust. 2. A Menu with common food done with flair.
3. A Nitch - what they do well.
4. Delivery of the food. He mentioned that some of these restaurants serve simple foods like Hot Dogs, but do it well.
How does this relate to the church? Paul says "to those outside the law I became as one outside the law that I might win those outside the law." (1 Corinthians 9:21)
Perhaps there are some things we can learn for our churches.

| Church Attendance |
In case you didn't see this, a Gallup poll discovered that Mississippians were the most frequent churchgoers in the nation in 2009, as was the case in 2008, with 63% of residents attending weekly or almost every week. Nine of the top 10 states in church attendance are in the South; the only non-Southern state is Utah, with 56% frequent attendance. At the other end of the spectrum, 23% of Vermont residents attend church frequently, putting it at the bottom of the list of churchgoing states. Other states at the bottom of the church attendance list are in either New England or the West. 35% of Californians attend something. read more |
