Sacrificial Love It's always nice to feel loved and to be shown expressions of love. Love, however, is an ongoing, continual, expression of compassion, and sometimes, it's not getting what you had planned on. My wife, Vicki,
|
Vicki and her parents
|
expressed her love for her folks just last month because of a turn of events. Vicki and I had planned to travel up to Sacramento for the RED's meetings in January, while her folks, visiting us from Illinois, would stay at a condo in Oceanside for a week, using our vehicle. Just before her folks arrived, we found out that her dad had a medical condition that made his doctor not allow him to drive, and her mom wasn't prepared to drive in the busy SoCal traffic. So, Vicki, out of love, said good bye to her trip to Sacramento, and hello to being the chauffeur for her parents. She was willing to sacrifice the trip because she loved her parents. I love my wife. A great example.
Love willingly gives up something in order to give to someone else. That is love. Don't forget to love sacrificially, it's what God would do. "For God so loved the world that He gave..." (John 3:16).
Happy Valentine's Day,
Jim Smith

The Board of Directors of Inland Hills Community Church is considering whether they will become New Song Community Church's first campus ministry or search for another Pastor. Hal Seed, Pastor of New Song in Oceanside, has been looking for a location for their first campus ministry. The members of Inland Hills have been in prayer about this since their Pastor, Mike Fleischmann, moved to another church near Portland. Inland Hills is a church plant in Bonsal, near Oceanside.

Good Preaching tips from Warren Wiersbe
One of the keys to having a healthy church is solid biblical preaching. Here are some important thoughts from Wiersbe...
"A father was showing his young son the wonders of the city museum, when his son spoke up rather loudly and said, "Dad, let's go someplace where the people and animals are real!" They went to the zoo. A museum is a great place to study the past, and there is nothing wrong with that; but most of us confess that the zoo is far more interesting. When you get tired of looking at animals, you can always watch the people. After all, that's how the animals are entertained! Too often, we treat the Bible like a museum and do all of our preaching in the past tense. The sermon is a history lesson instead of an exciting encounter with the living truth. We are guides in a museum, dusting off the artifacts and explaining the exhibits. And while we are lecturing, our people are saying to themselves, "We wish we could go someplace where things are alive and real!" What will help us start preaching in the present tense?" read more |
Change in North Central CB Region
Don Shaw, Regional Executive Director (RED) of the North Central Region has announced that he will be retiring September 30, 2011. Don has been the RED for eight years and previously pastored churches in New England, New York and Wisconsin. The North Central Board had known of Don's upcoming retirement and has already identified a new Executive Director who will be announced at their Annual Meeting in Lake Geneva in Wisconsin this April. Don will be bringing in Leith Anderson to speak on Ethics in Ministry. We appreciate the leadership Don has given to the North Central CB region and to CBAmerica and the other RED's. Thank you, Don. Don and his wife, Betsy, are exploring options for the next chapter in their lives. |

National CBAmerica RED's Meeting
|
Bert Downs, Jim Smth and Gary Golike at the CBAmerica Board Meeting.
|
Last month, CBAmerica's Board and Regional Executive Directors (RED's) met at Lakeside Church in Folsom, CA near Sacramento. The board is led by the eight Regional Executive Directors from around the country. Brad Franklin, the RED from NextGen Churches (CB Northern CAl) and Pastor of Lakeside church says, "These are good men who are seeking to bless the pastors in their respective regions and lead a fractious movement of independent churches into a cohesive mission. And some good stuff is happening that we can share together."
For example, Jim Leary, the RED from Mission Mid-Atlantic, has been trained to help churches in conflict. He will soon be offering that training to our region so that we can serve one another in a really significant area: Peacemaking.
Mark Hoeffner, the RED from CB Northwest, is doing some great work in the area of Leadership Training within Churches and shared it with the other regions. He also had some good church-planting ideas. Shaun Garman, a church planter, is being sent out from two CB Northwest churches to plant a church in Ventura this year.
CBAmerica is led by the eight RED's, with Bert Downs serving as the Catalyst, Jim Leary working in the area of Community, and Stan Reib is the National Facilitator.
