Jim, David Hay, Stephen LeBar at Calvary Baptist in Canton, Michigan

Investments
We traveled to Canton, Michigan for Christmas. It was so good to see my mom, brother, sisters, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews and good friends from Calvary Baptist in Canton where I served as youth pastor for 9 years. Since many of the former staff still have family back in Canton, on Christmas Eve, David Hay (former Senior Pastor) Stephen LeBar (former Worship Pastor) and myself were all present. While there, it was good to see the returns of some of the investments I had made in the lives of a pile of students. My CBSC Finance Team and Board have carefully invested the funds from the sale of Pine Summit Camp hoping to see some good returns, but it is even more exciting to see what God is doing through the lives of people into whom we have invested time and energy. David Hay invested in me, I got to invest in others. Some former youth group members that I saw included: Mark Butler, Junior High and Christian Education Pastor at Calvary Baptist (he has been there 16 years!); Phil Woodman, College Age Pastor at Calvary Baptist; Mark Hovermale, Youth Pastor at Plymouth Presbyterian; Jammie Martin, Children's Ministries Leader at Oak Pointe Church; Mark Varney, Small Group Leader and Bass Player at Mars Hill Church in Seattle (he was home for Christmas as well); and Brad Hovermale, Business Administrator at Calvary. I think of what Paul said to Timothy, "and the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others." ( 2 Timothy 2:2)

This new year, keep investing in people.

Happy New Year.

tsa Salvation Army Buys Pine Summit
After almost three years on the market, Pine Summit has finally been sold. The secret buyer can finally be revealed, although many knew who bought the camp when they saw people around Pine Summit in the very recognizable special attire. The new owners are The Salvation Army (TSA)! TSA is excited about the future of Pine Summit and will continue to rent out the camp along with adding some of their own program camps. TSA first contacted Jim Smith in July about purchasing the camp and entered into escrow at the end of the same month. On Tuesday, December 21, the deal was closed. With the sale of the camp, CB Southern California will be able to pay all their loans and be completely debt-free.

Great Donation to Pine Summit

Early in the spring, Pine Summit started looking to replace the old and almost useless video projector in the Chapel, but the price to replace the projector and screen with the correct lumens and extension lens was right at $10,000. Through a very generous donaton of $5,000 from Sunrise Church, Rialto and Moore Electric Inc, Pine Summit now has an awesome, clear, bright, new 7,000 lumens projector and larger screen in the Cedar Chapel for future groups to enjoy, although they won't notice it much. People only notice things when they are not working properly. So for those groups who came up this summer, next time you're in camp, you will greatly appreciate the last big noticable improvement CB did for its camp before the sale to the Salvation Army.

Global Media Outreach Free Luncheon
gmoThis is truly exciting. Walt Wilson is a Conservative Baptist laymen who, when he retired from Apple Computers a few years ago, asked the Lord what he should do with his time. After much prayer, he founded Gospel Media Outreach. So far, his little enterprise has seen over 30 million come to Christ! Each month over 1 million people have found Christ through Global Media Outreach's100 plus web sites. These new Christians need follow up. GMO is looking for online missionaries. It's free to be one, you just need the internet, training and willingness to train new believers. GMO also offers online Bible studies, Web sites with next steps for the journey and links to local church communities. lunchCheck out some of the GMO website at their facebook page.

GMO will be sponsoring a free luncheon at New Song Community Church in Oceanside on January 13 to share about their ministry and the need for online missionaries to mentor these new believers. You must RSVP. Call Ken Prentiss at 858.722.7257 or email him at ken@high-ground.org. You may invite others to join you at this luncheon.

Jim and Vicki Smith joined the festivities along with members from Celebrate Recovery. Pastor Dave Metzger has led this congregation over the past decade. The church spent time looking back, celebrated what God is doing currently through many of their ministries, such as Celebrate Recovery and Awana, and looked forward to the future.

tonyTony Pezzotta's Latest Diagnosis
Tony's disease has no medical cure. His doctor has ordered the stop of the medications since these were resulting in no positive response, only negative side effects. Dr. Tony Pezzotta was CBSC's Ethnic Ministries Director for many years. We don't know what the future holds for Tony, but one thing we know, he is in God's hands. Pray for his wife, Zita, as she oversees the care of Tony. See this website which explains what this disorder is all about.

Repenting of Church Sins
Doug Tegner, Pastor of Redwood Chapel in Castro Valley, CA, wrote an interesting article in Leadership Journel. He was writing about his church that was struggling with past sins. He writes, "We named at least four sins that had ebbed and flowed through our church over recent decades: (1) Arrogance, boastfulness, and pride, (2) Hydroplaning over issues; sending them underground, (3) Gossip, and (4) Gracelessness." He wrote that these sins had been observed in the pulpit, pew, parking lot and in public.  Read the rest of the article here.
