Thanks
While flying across the Pacific recently, I became appreciative of little things, like a bed to sleep in while stretched out, and comfortable chairs with elbow room. I was thankful for the good books which I read, like Deliberate Simplicity by Dave Browning, Quitting Church by Julia Duin, The Forgotten God by Francis Chan and a novel by someone, but I forgot the name...(it was a good historical fiction book on the end times.) In Taiwan, I was thankful for a great conference, a roommate from America, and a chance to meet friends from other countries and hear their stories and appreciate their ability to speak English. I only know one language, and I still haven't mastered it. I was thankful for a good hotel. I was thankful for my wife, whom I missed greatly, and my family. I am thankful my son-in-law Eric is going to seminary and got another church position closer to the seminary. I am thankful my other son-in-law, Nick, is stepping out in faith as a missionary to the music world and that God is meeting his need. I'm thankful for my grandkids, for my daughters, Ashley and Emily, who are great moms, for my daughter Amy and her steady job as a Montesori teacher, and for my son, Andy, doing very well at Moody Bible Institute. I am thankful for being part of the greatest group in the world, the family of God. Being away from my everyday life made me appreciate what I forget is special. And yet, seeing what I don't see very often, made me thankful for what God is doing on the other side of the world. I am thankful God is big, that God is in charge and is working everywhere. He is not worried at all about anything. I am thankful I am His. Be Thankful. Happy Thanksgiving, Jim SmithExecutive Director CB Southern California Pine Summit www.cbasc.com

Pine Summit in Escrow
|
Pine Summit has entered escrow with a Christian organization to purchase the camp! Two years ago we entered into escrow with a different organization, but the funding fell through and the sale was not completed. We are excited that this organization will keep Pine Summit functioning as a Christian camp and has the desire and financial ability to complete the Master Plan of Expansion and Improvements for Pine Summit. The sale of the camp should be completed by the end of the year, however, we are praying that it will finalize in November.

Inland Hills Joins CB Southern California
| Inland Hills Community Church started as a Bible Study in '08 and eventually launched its first church service on January 11, 2009 at the UltraStar Cinemas in Oceanside, where they continue to meet. They began with 75 original members and now have about 130 in regular attendance. The congregation meets at 9:30 am, needing to be out before the first movie begins. Conveniently located next to the Cinema, a Montesori school allows them use of their classrooms for their kids' programs. The church is led by Pastor Mike Fleischmann who is also their founding Pastor. On October 21, the CB Board met and voted to receive Inland Hills into our association. You may visit their web site for more information at inlandhills.net. |

Brent Garrison Connects at the Men's Retreat
|
It was a privilege to have Dr. Brent Garrison as the main speaker for our Fall Men's Retreat at Pine Summit. He likes motorcycles, his family and the Lord. His stories and spiritual practical advice were priceless. One written suggestion for the Men's Retreat was to "make it longer, maybe a week or two!" Someone else wrote that Brent Garrison "was the best speaker I have ever heard." Brent spoke to a group of 86 men on the importance of spiritual disciplines, such as journaling, prayer, bible study, and silence. Brent recently stepped down from his position as President of Southwestern College in Phoenix and is now a consultant for CEO's of major corporations.

Thoughts from CBGlobal Meetings
|
I had a great time in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, meeting with other delegates
 | | CBGlobal Delegates. |
from CB churches in Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Macua, and the Philippines. I witnessed what I have often heard about-- that in the last decade, the center of the church of Jesus Christ on our planet has shifted away from the West to the South and the East. The Asian Pastors and leaders have a passion, joy and dedication that is infectious. I agree with Hans Finzel (WorldVenture) who wrote about his time at the Lausanne III Conference in Cape Town just recently:
 | | Took this while I was preaching |
"It seems that so much of our church in the West is a church of the head--these dear brothers and sisters seem much more focused on a faith of the heart." They have a great appreciation of the work the missionaries from America did in the past, and now they are continuing the work in greater numbers. They are planting new churches. The Philippine churches have planted over 100 new churches in the last 2 years and have a vision to reach a total of 2,025 CB churches by the year 2025. The church in Kaohsiung Taiwan (of 1,200 people) has partnered with other CB churches in Taiwan to send over 100 missionaries to Nepal, Pakistan and other places in the Middle East! It was exciting to be part of the CBGlobal conference. We look forward to partnering with them in the future.

Two Very Talented Music Teams
|
 | | Mountain View Band |
We are grateful to the great Praise Team from Mountain View Bible Church, our CB church plant in Alpine, CA, east of San Diego. The team led our men in singing during our Fall Men's Retreat at Pine Summit. Mountain View's Pastor, Eric Motl, played the bass along with the other very talented members of the Mountain View Praise Band. | | Hillside Band |
During our Transforming Churches Conference at Hillside Community Church in Rancho Cucamonga, the Praise Team from Transformation Ministries' Hillside Church did an excellent job in leading the conference in singing.
Thanks to both bands for their humble attitudes, willingness to go the extra mile and for their tremendous skill and ability. Both teams added quality to these two events. |

Powerful Preaching
|
Over 500 attended the Transforming Churches Conference at Hillside Community Church this October. Thanks to TM (Transformation Ministries) for allowing CBSC to join them again this year. Tom Mercer, Dave Gibbons and Harvey Carey were a few of the speakers at the conference. Only a few CB churches were represented, but one CB associate Pastor attending the conference really enjoyed hearing Harvey Carey. He said he had "never heard preaching like that." Harvey is the Pastor of the Citadel of Faith in Detroit, Michigan. It was truly something that we'll not soon forget. Share the Gospel where you are! We will attempt to see if we can make this message available to those interested. Plan now to attend the 2011 Transforming Church Conference on October 20-21. It is well worth your time.

Spanish-speaking Congregation Grows
|
In Santa Barbara, Calvary Baptist's Spanish-speaking congregation under the leadership of Pastor Rolman Mazariegos has seen their attendance grow this past year from 100 to 165. Iglesia Bautista El Calvario has a goal of reaching the 200 mark by 2011. They have baptized 28 people so far this year. Pastor Rolman, who also serves on the CBSC Board, has served at the church for five years and works closely with the English-speaking congregation pastor, Christian Schalesky, who is new to the church this year.

New Life Christian Fellowship Looking for Location
|
This young church plant needs a new location near East L.A. Pastor Al Galvan asks that we keep them in prayer. New Life was using a business meeting room made available for their use by a company in East LA, but that company is now moving to another location. There are a couple of possibilities on the horizon, and they need to move soon. Please pray with them.

What's a TCK?
| |
A "Third Culture Kid" is anyone who has spent a significant time during their developmental years in a country other than that of their parents. Kids grow up taking on part of their 'adopted' culture. This can present unique advantages such as understanding other cultural viewpoints. There are also unique challenges such as education issues and figuring out where they 'belong.' Missionary Kids, Business Kids, Diplomat Kids are all TCK's.
For the past several years, Donna Grandi has been working with the TCK families of IDEAS who are living and working in various cultures. She has been supporting these families with issues of education, child development and cross cultural adjustments.
In 2011, there will be three IDEAS' conferences, and another conference for homeschooling families, all to be held overseas in Portugal, India and Thailand. These conferences are an important source of encouragement and planning for adults. It is also a time for the kids to learn and share their TCK experience together.
Donna is in the process of program planning and recruiting volunteers. Would you like to travel and serve these families or know someone who would be interested? Please contact Donna Grandi for details.

Shorter Greeting Time
| A suggestion. I visit many of our churches and many have a time of welcoming during their morning service. It is a great idea! HOWEVER, don't have it longer than 30-60 seconds. It becomes awkward to guests after a few quick handshakes. In my role as guest speaker for the day, I sometimes notice the welcoming time extends too long. While visiting one church, after shaking a few hands, I had time to leave the room, go to the bathroom, and return. Have the band play a longer introduction to the next song while the greeting is taking place. Have it, but keep it short and sweet.

Increase Giving
| |
Recently, Keith Hamilton of Church Financial Services (Georgia Baptist Convention) surveyed 1,800 pastors to learn if their church offerings had increased in 2009. Keith wanted to discover what churches were doing during these difficult economic times to increase giving. He's written an excellent summary of his findings and his suggestions for pastors and other church leaders.
1. Creating a "Trying to
Out-give God" attitude.
2. Conducting a financial
freedom course.
3. Developing a clear vision
that the people buy into
as their own.
4. Teaching tithing and
generosity.
5. Establishing pastoral
leadership of giving.
