fall retreat

September 2010
 Dr. Jim
degreeI am writing this in the cool mountain air, listening to the thunder rumble all around me. It was 42 degrees cooler when I came up to Pine Summit yesterday after leaving my home in the 106 degree heat. As I traveled up the mountain, the relief was not only in the cooler temperatures, but that I  had just completed my doctoral program and passed my oral exam for my dissertation. It feels good to accomplish something that took so long to finish. I now have my Doctor of Ministry and something more to put after my name. Wow, I thought I would never get done. It took me two years to finish my dissertation, eight years to finish my doctoral program. Now I have a little break in my schedule. I don't have to think, "I should be working on my paper instead of watching a movie." I won't have this doctoral thing hanging over me. I am done. It feels good. I'll start something else soon, but right now, I am taking a break. It's nice that God gives us these breaks every once in awhile. Jesus, because so many people were coming and going that the disciples did not even have a chance to eat, said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." (Mark 6:31) Even though the people ran ahead of them and they didn't get much rest at the time, Jesus encouraged them to take a break. Don't forget to take one yourself, for whatever reason.

Tabernacle Replica in Manhattan Beach
tabernaclePastor Glen Martin of Journey of Faith in Manhattan Beach is preaching through Exodus. Since the Tabernacle is so prominent in Exodus, they decided to build a real full scale replica of the Old Testament Tabernacle in their parking lot! They held their Sunday morning worship services outside, right by the Tabernacle. It is only going to be there one more week before it's shipped to a church in the Phoenix area. If you have time, take a drive to see this amazing recreation.

Tony Pezzotta Update

Our former Ethnic Ministries Director, Tony, and his wife Zita, have sold their home on a short sale and are settling into a new apartment in Santa Ana. The surgery that was planned for Tony was not indicated after all. Instead he has received enough money in gifts to allowed him to purchase a special machine which he will use to treat his nerve condition. He is hopeful that by God's grace and power, this will bring healing to his nerves, allowing him to regain movement, balance and a normal life. He would really appreciate your prayers to this end. Tony & Zita Pezzotta Home Phone Number: 714.617.5086, Tony Cell: 714.553.3599.
Area Pastors' Gatherings Starting in September
Each month CB provides area meetings for Pastors and their staff to get together for a time of encouragement, fellowship and training. Each group is unique and we strongly urge all staff members that are close to these meetings to make it a priority to get there. We have three Pastors of large churches willing to invest time and energy to help other Pastors in their ministry.

Rialto Group - Wednesday, September 1, Sunrise Church, 12:00 p.m. -1:30 p.m. This month they are Charting the Course for the coming year. Pastor Jay Pankratz wants YOU to come with some ideas about what you would like to see happen each month. Mentoring? Prayer and Share? Fellowship?

Whittier Group - The Pastor meetings with Pastor Robert Bishop will resume on Tuesday, September 21st from 11:30 to 1 p.m. at Whittier Hills Baptist Church. Please RSVP to nancyn@whittierhills.org. It will be the 3rd Tuesday of the month unless otherwise stated.

Oceanside Group - This group will be training in sessions especially geared towards church health and growth. Pastor Hal Seed will lead this group at New Song in Oceanside once a month, from Sept. - June. They will skip Dec. and Apr. to focus on Christmas and Easter. These sessions will run from 10 - 11:30 a.m. The  cost is based on church size.
Here's the scale:

Calvary Baptist in Bishop is Making An Impact
Pastor Rick and Richard with Jim
rick and richard
Jim Smith had the opportunity to preach at Calvary Baptist in Bishop this August and joined Pastor Rick at a church picnic following the service to catch up on what is happening at Calvary. They are continuing to grow, reaching the 80% capacity in their all-purpose room. In September, they will move to two services to make room for more people. Pastor Rick Klug is making not only an impact in the church, but is very busy as the high school football coach for the only high school in town. They practice almost year-round, and he has good connections with many families. Rick also has become a foster dad for Richard, a sixth grader who has lived in many homes in many states in his short life. With encouragement from church leaders and community friends, Rick went through the process to become a foster parent.
 Bill Ingram Ordained
Bill IngramJourney of Faith (JOF) in Manhattan Beach ordained Bill Ingram this past month. JOF asked CB Southern California to take Bill through the entire ordination process, from composing his statement of faith to the actual Ordination Council. On Monday, August 16, Bill met with the Ordination Council, composed of CB Pastors and a JOF staff member. After a 2 1/2-hour question and answer session, the council officially ordained Bill to ministry. Bill is married to Denise and has four children: Amber, Tyler, Drew and Isaac. He received his BA in Religion at Southern California College and received his MA in Christian Leadership from Hope International University. Congratulations, Bill!
San Diego Padres Share their Faith
adrianOn Friday night, July 30, thousand of people stayed after the game at Petco Park for the San Diego Padres faith and fellowship night featuring Adrian Gonzalez, Chase Headley, Tony Gwyn Jr., Health Bell and other believers on the Padres Baseball team. Members of First Baptist Church of Fallbrook and Mountain View Bible Church were among the thousands who stayed to hear their testimonies. It was exciting to hear these big league players boldly talk about their faith in Jesus and how they share their faith with others.

CB Chaplains Working in Iraq
chaplainIn Iraq, CB Chaplain Chester Olson of Fort Lewis, WA has conducted over 40 marriage workshops covering the Five Love Languages and showed the movie, "Fire Proof," several times. "Our Battalion purchased enough Love Dare books so every married Soldier could have one upon redeployment. We helped many Soldiers work towards becoming better husbands, better fathers and to grow in their relationship with Jesus. Although 14% of our unit is planning on divorce when we get back, I have seen several relationships go through great healing. God is good and all of our success this last year is because of His grace and mercy!"
Creekside Bible Prayer Request
In San Juan Capistrano, our young church plant, Creekside Bible Chapel, is looking for a Children's Coordinator. God is good and people are growing in Him, but their biggest need right now is a children's supervisor who would plan the lessons or curriculum and organize volunteers. Please pray they will find the right leader. Creekside has implemented a one-on-one discipleship program that is going well and also has an excellent (professional quality) worship team that is committed to their church plant. Church Planter Pastor Derek Greenhalgh is still working 50 hours a week in his job and planting the church in his free time. Keep them in prayer.
Healthy Pastors Hard to Find
overwieghtThe New York Times reported that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America found that 69 percent of its ministers reported being overweight, 64 percent having high blood pressure and 13 percent taking antidepressants. This is similar across America. Members of the clergy suffer from obesity, hypertension and depression at rates higher than most Americans. Also, in the last decade, their use of antidepressants has risen, while their life expectancy has fallen. Many would change jobs if they could.

Public health experts who have led the studies caution that there is no simple explanation of why so many members of a profession once associated with rosy-cheeked longevity have become so unhealthy and unhappy. But while research continues, a growing number of health care experts and religious leaders have settled on one simple remedy that has long been a touchy subject with many clerics: taking more time off. Read the whole article.

Article on Preaching About Money

Bob Russell wrote an interesting article on Money called Secrets to Sermons on Giving. He writes:

"For years I boasted to our congregation that I only preached on stewardship once annually. When that dreaded sermon came, I apologized at the beginning: "If you're visiting with us today, please understand that we only preach on giving once a year." In essence I said, "I'm sorry you've chosen to come today-I know this subject is a downer. Please come back anyway, and I promise you'll not hear another sermon on money for fifty-one weeks!"

Even though preaching on money turns some people off, some are turned off when we preach on adultery or forgiveness, too. But we don't apologize: "If you're having an affair, please understand we seldom talk about sexual purity. Come back next week and you'll be more comfortable." We don't print a disclaimer in the bulletin: "The preacher will be talking about releasing resentment today. Please understand this sermon is for our members only. If you're visiting today, you aren't expected to forgive. If you're currently harboring a grudge, earplugs are provided."

Healty Churches Reminder

bookWhile churches focus on reaching more people and bearing "even more fruit," H.B. London writes in his book "Refresh, Renew, Revive," about focusing on the health of your members as well. Keep them moving from salvation to growing to ministry to outreach and evangelism. No matter what size your church is, maturity and inevitable positive kingdom impact is important. In a chapter on Leaders, Vision, and Success, London interviews George Barna who said, "We don't say, my what a good job of parenting he did, look at how many children he has. But we do say, my what a good job of parenting he did, look how his children have grown, become mature, and are a valuable asset to society. We should do the same with pastors; not say, my what a good pastor he is, look how big his church is, but say, my what a good pastor he is, look how many of his church members are growing, maturing, and are a valuable asset in their homes, and community." Success in ministry, if measured this way, will fit for all pastors and churches regardless of size.
