Pay Attention
I was playing a game called "Ticket to Ride" with some of the Regional Executive Directors one evening at our summer meetings in Colorado Springs. I love the USA version, but in this German version, we had to build tracks between cities in Germany. You get points if you connect your cities correctly. I wasn't too familiar with cities in Germany, but I thought I had everything set and I might win the game. Nope. I didn't read the card correctly and built a track to the wrong city. It was right on the card, plain as day, and I had the cards all game long, but I didn't read it correctly. Cost me the game. Soldiers have found the value of following directions throughout history. We celebrate our freedom and 234th birthday this month because of the many who paid attention in the heat of the battle. Same thing for Christians. We are in a war, we need to follow our directions. Read the Bible, often and correctly, and then do what it says. Don't go through life thinking you have it all together only to find out you had it wrong all along. This holiday, we remember those who followed their leaders and gave us freedom. We need to remember to follow our commander-in-chief and follow His orders.
Sincerely,

| FIVE PERCENT (5%) CHURCH GROWTH | This year we are encouraging churches to focus on 5% conversion growth. At this halfway point in the year, two churches in North San Diego county have seen growth. Pastor Gary Golike says Fallbrook First Baptist Church has grown so far this year from 90 to 110, a significant 22 percent growth. They have started small groups called "life groups" and have moved their Sunday worship service from 9am to 10:30am which has brought excitment and a few more people in the worship experience. According to Pastor Hal Seed, New Song Church in Oceanside is seeing an average of 4 people each day coming to Christ. They went through a series called, "To Save A Family," and their church grew by 28 percent. He thinks inviting people to a family series is the easiest invitation there is. If your church would like to do the series, Hal would like to provide it all at a discount. Check it out at www.pastormentor.com. He'll get it to CBA churches for 15 percent less than what's listed there, so contact Hal personally if you're interested. Do something to reach out to those around you. The fall is a great time to start a new series and emphasis. Back to top. |
| LEST WE FORGET |
Over and over again in the Old Testament the Lord told His people to "Remember." We get so wrapped up with the day-to-day issues of life, we forget. Two special days have already come along this year when we are reminded to "REMEMBER." Memorial Day and July 4th are days we need to take time to remember those who sacrificed their lives in service for our great country. The Department of Defense gives us the numbers of those who died while serving in each war we fought as a nation. Read through this and pause to say "thanks" for these lives lost.
Here is a list of the battle deaths:
Revolutionary War (1775-1783) - 4,435 War of 1812 (1812-1815) - 2,260 Indian Wars (1817-1898) - 1,000 Mexican War (1846-1848) - 13,283 Civil War (1861-1865) - 588,052 Spanish-American War - 2,446 WWI (1917-1918) - 16,708 WWII (1941-1945) - 407,316 Korean War (1950-1953) - 33,651 Vietnam War (1964-1975) - 58,168 Gulf War (1990-1991) - 293 Iraq War (2003-present) - 4,405 Afghan War (2001 - present) - 1,115
Winston Churchill once said, "Never before in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few."
There is no greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for a friend. Please don't forget on these special days those who laid down their lives for us. Remember their cost. They gave their all. Don't forget to pray for the leaders of our great country as well. We cannot loose what these brave warriors have given their lives for.

| PINE SUMMIT IN FULL SWING | Early in June, hundreds of students came from North Phoenix Baptist Church. The next week, over 500 Awana students from all over Southern California attended Pine Summit's Leadership Summit. Next came over 500 students from Lancaster Bible Church, a group which travelled from many different areas to come together for camp. The statistics are not all in, but many have given their lives to Christ from what the leaders are telling us, and lives are being changed. The summer is full with groups coming from all over the greater Southwest USA. Pray for the camp staff that we will continue to ministry in a godly way to all of these groups and individuals. www.pinesummit.com

| USING YOUR CHURCH WEB SITE FOR EVANGELISM | Could someone find out how to become a christian on your church web site? A poll conducted by Endis, for ChurchInsight Web, which has offices in England and the United States found out some interesting facts about church web sites in the UK. When churches deliberetely focus on attracting outsiders, they see a corresponding rise in guest visitors. However, most church web sites are designed for internal use. Here are a few tips that might be helpful to us on this side of the pond.
Top tips for effective use: 1. Write your content with the 'unchurched' in mind. read more2. Try to be more interactive and immediate 3. Events are more attractive than a Church service 4. The web is just part of your mission efforts
5. Be serious about the web. The web is the new printing press and a world of virtual communities.

| TONY PEZZOTTA HEALTH UPDATE |
Update on Tony Pezzotta, CBSC's soon-to-be retired Ethnic Ministries Director: Tony had some tests run at UCI and Good Samaritan hospital a few weeks ago, and the results have been received. He has since seen both his new PCP and his neurosurgeon. Tony does NOT have Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) or MS. So the heavy-hitting neurodegenerative diseases have been ruled out. Tony also does NOT have NPH (normal pressure hydrocephalus). This was a shock since both doctors were almost certain that he had this. This would have been treated by the shunt surgery. The last test done at Good Samaritan, the CSF flow study, showed that there was no abnormal pressure on his brain. This being said, shunt surgery is no longer necessary, or the cure to his ailments. Tony does have mild polyneuropathy. This means that his motor nerves are degenerating, especially at his extremities. The electromyographic (EGM) performed at UCI shows this. His doctor says that this is quite normal for the elderly. Evidently this affects over 25% of seniors over 70. Tony also has pinched nerves in his neck that are affecting his left arm, lower back and his balance. These pinched nerves cannot be surgically corrected. Tony's left wrist has carpal-tunnel like issues.
Tony also has neurodegeneration. What the neurosurgeon has realized is that the reason the ventricles seem so large is that his brain is shrinking. He also has some serious degeneration in his temporal lobe, and this is why he has had some speech issues as well as other symptoms. It's not abnormal for this to happen at his age, but the doctor is concerned enough to send Tony to another specialist. Treatment: For the polyneuropathy and pinched nerves, the doctors have prescribed physical therapy, 3 times a week, 2 hours, for 3 months. The therapist will come to the house and is fully covered by medicare. He also needs to stay active and excercise. So pray that he can keep up with the PT and exercise. For the neurodegeneration, Tony has been referred to a doctor at USC who specializes in neurodegeneration. There will probably be some tests, but this will likely be treated with drugs that will slow down the process and help memory etc. He also needs to stay cognitively active...so brain exercise. The bottom line is there is not one golden diagnosis or pill/surgery that will cure him, but rather his recoverly will require mostly hard work through PT. His family asks prayer for Tony, that he will be able to persevere with his PT. Pray also for Zita who has taken on a major caretaker role since Tony's health decline. If you would like to send a card of encouragement to Tony & Zita, please address it c/o CBSC, PO Box 1652, Upland, CA 91785, and we will forward it to them. Back to top. |

| INTERNET PORNOGRAPHY |
It's sad, but the most popular day to view porn is on Sunday. The least popular day is Thanksgiving. Sex trafficking is big business. Many of the 17,000 illegal slaves smuggled into America every year are abused in this way. Surprisingly, there are 27 million slaves in the world today, more than ever before. Pornography encourages this. Pornography has been traded online since the 1980's, and with the rise of the World Wide Web in the 1990's, adult web sites began springing up everywhere. 12% of the web sites are pornographic. Men mostly, but a surprising number of women have a problem with viewing porn. Internet pornography is a $10 billion US business. It has ensnared millions of men and women in addictive, destructive behavior. Check out this web site for help.
Internet pornography is a widespread problem, even within our churches. Please take a moment and click on the link below to view an enlightening graph showing the disturbing hold pornography has on our world today. Pornography Statistics Back to top. |
