QUESTIONS
Time magazine observed in a 2007 cover story that only half of U.S. adults could name one of the four Gospels. Fewer than half could identify Genesis as the Bible's first book. Is it any better now?

LOST
From six season's of watching LOST, one writer from Christianity Today offers these thoughts:
Bible's heaven beats Lost's It is true that we will be reunited with loved ones in heaven, but I am grateful that the Bible does not suggest any detours (i.e. purgatory) along the way where we must atone for our sins before we enter paradise.
Despite its strong spiritual themes-many of them quite biblical-Lost ultimately embraces many religions. Without Jesus as Messiah, we are left with a do-it-yourself path to salvation, and no matter how many religions statues, symbols, and icons you pile upon one another-as Lost did at the church in the finale's closing moments-it lacks true hope and any inkling of radical grace. The joy of heaven will not be the presence of friends and family, it will be the beauty of living in the presence of Jesus the Liberating King. * * * read more

According to Consumer Reports, here is how super-markets are laid out.
1. Seasonal fare in the front.
2. Produce is attractive, colorful, showcasing their image.
3. Related items are diplayed together.
4. Flowers near the front.
5. Some refrigerated displays are in the middle of an isle for convience and to slow people down.
6. Most needed items like milk and eggs are in the back.
7. Bakery near the front with pleasant aroma.
Everything in the store is laid out for a purpose and to slow people down. Would it be wise to follow some examples and put coffee stands in the middle somewhere..?

Hold On
My son, Andy, just returned from Moody last month and had one week before heading up to Pine Summit, where he is now, to work all summer. So, he organized a quick trip to Zion National Park to go hiking with some friends. When it came time to go, only one other guy could make it, so he invited me to go. As busy as I was, I couldn't pass
Angels Landing Trail | up this opportunity to go on a road trip with my son and his friend, Christopher. One hike he wanted to go on was called "Angels Landing." It was a 5 mile hike, straight up. The last half mile also included drop-offs of 1,000 feet on both sides of the trail. A warning is placed on the trail at this point that says, "falls resulting in death have occurred beyond this point." We pressed on and made it to the top. Fortunately, during that last 1/2 mile, the National Park Service had placed a chain securely embedded in the rock to hold onto as people climb up this very popular trail. It was an exhilarating hike, which gave me the chills as well as spectacular views and memories. However, during the hike, I held onto that chain as often as possible. That chain was my security, the hope that I could make it all the way. That chain reminded me of the Holy Spirit, helping me through my journey in life. I am not embarrassed to admit that I needed the chain to make it way up to the top, and I am definitely not embarrassed to say I need the help of the Holy Spirit to hold onto what is good. "Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. Do not scoff at prophecies, but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of evil." (1 Thess. 5:14-22) Hold on to what is good. Jim SmithExecutive Director CB Southern California Pine Summit |

Tony Pezzotta's New Doctor Has Good News
We have good news. Tony Pezzotta does not have Parkinson's Disease. A visit to a new doctor was extremely encouraging. He made Tony walk, then started a conversation with him. Dr. Phan was all smiles when he broke the news that Tony did not have PD. He further explained that if he had PD, he wouldn't be able to walk as he does. He also said Tony has no trembling while talking, and above all, PD patients can't converse the way Tony does. Most PD patient will just say "yes" or "no" for an answer. He said to Tony, "you must be an intelligent man!" Tony's reply, "I used to be one!" Tony's memory is very good with no sign of Alzheimers disease, Dementia or PD! He has water on his brain which is causing much of his difficulties. Tony will see a neuro-surgeon the first week of June and will have surgery to relieve the water and pressure on his brain sometime near June 15th. Please continue to pray that everything will go well. |

Now that I'm up directing Pine Summit, I get to see the activities and ministry of our camp on a day-to-day basis. We are still praying for God's guidance about the future of camp, but while we wait, good improvements are happening. Recently, an appeal was made for some financial help for Pine Summit, and so far, over $7,000 has come in from churches and and individuals. Thank you so very much. Here are some other updates from camp....

Pine Summit has just completed renovating Sugar Pine Meeting Room #2 into a new coffee shoppe, complete with candy, hot chocolate, nick nacks, and cable TV. The coffee shoppe is in the center of camp and a perfect place to rest, meet other people and hang out.

Volunteer Tax Deductions
Are expenses incurred for volunteer work deductible? Consider if a person is planning a church mission trip to El Salvador to help build houses, and the church will not cover the airfare. The volunteer may deduct his or her properly documented travel expenses and possibly other expenses as well. Similarly, if a person serves as a volunteer board member, his or her unreimbursed travel expenses to attend meetings and other functions may be deductible. Several IRS guidelines apply for taxpayers who file an itemized Schedule A with their IRS Form 1040. First, only expenses that are directly related to qualified volunteer services may be deducted. Examples of related expenses include transportation, lodging, and meals. If items such as food, books, building materials, or other tangible items are purchased for the charity, then these expenses also generally may be deductible. Second, volunteers may not deduct the value of their services. Thus, if a person spends 4 hours laying brick in El Salvador, he or she may not deduct the hourly wage of the average bricklayer. However, the person may deduct the costs of supplies brought and used on behalf of the charity. Third, the expenses must be unreimbursed, be reasonable, and not consist of personal expenses. Fourth, the 2010 charity rate for vehicle mileage is 14¢ per mile. This is significantly lower than the business rate. Fifth, no out-of-pocket expenses are deductible if there is a significant element of personal pleasure associated with them. Not even partial deductions are permitted. This element is assumed "significant" if the importance and/or duration of the duties to the charity are minor in relation to an entire trip or other service activity. This does not mean that volunteers may not enjoy their work. For a day at the beach during a week-long, labor intensive missions trip, the trip expenses should be deductible. But if the meetings are only one hour per day, the deductibility of these expenses is questionable. Last, as with other tax deductions, volunteers must maintain reliable records to satisfy applicable substantiation requirements, including pertinent dates, amounts, receipts, and descriptions of the charitable purpose of out-of-pocket expenses. For unreimbursed expenses of more than $250, a volunteer also must obtain a written acknowledgment from a donee organization with a description of the expenses, incurred on behalf of the organization, a statement of whether the donee provided any goods or services in return, and a good faith estimate of any such goods or services provided in return other than intangible religious benefits.

Great Discount for CB Pastors
This is something we have to mention again. Last October, we told you about Cardiff Lodge which offers a 90% discount to Pastors at their Luxerious Bed and Breakfast in north San Diego county. This discount is still available, but during the summer months, priority will go to regular customers. However, last-minute accommodations may still be made if there is availability. Take advantage of this fantastic deal, and don't forget to thank them.
We want to recommend something of value for those who read this, so this week I will be personally checking out the Cardiff Lodge when I take my lovely wife, Vicki, to the Lodge to celebrate our 32nd anniversary. She has been the best partner I could have as I journey through this life. Thanks for reading our newsletter. Have a great month everyone. |
