TopA Baby is Coming

emilyA baby is coming our way next year. Our daughter, Emily Greenwood (and Nick) are having their firstborn son, little Jackson Greenwood, coming in March. For several years they were trying to have a baby and then started the adoption process. They had their home visits, developed a web site and came out to "give us an update on the adoption." We thought they found a baby to adopt, but they gave us the news that they were suspending the adoption process because they were pregnant. This next year, Vicki and I become grandparents, and we are looking forward to it. We haven't been there before, but we think spoiling and loving this little bundle will be great. Christmas is all about a baby. The angels told the shepherds to "look for a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger." (Luke 2 The Message) Jesus was born as a little baby. Unfortunately, outside of heaven, not many looked forward to his arrival because they really didn't know he was coming. There was no nursery waiting for his arrival, no pile of clothes waiting for him to wear, no gathering of the relatives at the news of his arrival. Just an unfamiliar town, with strange shepherds visiting from the field, a bed of hay for his bed and God watching over the whole event. I would have not done it that way, but God did. He often seems to do things totally different than how I would have planned things. But I stand amazed at how it all works out. It just does. We continually must learn to trust and obey him. This Christmas, celebrate the way God knows, and holds, the future. And thank him for the free gift of salvation. It's the best gift you'll ever get.

Merry ChristmasJim!

CB Christmas Banquet
nazarethYou really do deserve a break. Our annual Christmas Banquet is coming up this Monday, December 7 at the Wyndham Hotel in
Costa Mesa at 6:30 p.m.
Bring your staff, spouse, and if you are not on staff, call your Pastor and tell him you will pay for him to attend. This is a great time to laugh, network, and laugh. We have arranged for a great comedy act with DANA DANIELS. We have provided free parking for all who attend, and if you wish to stay overnight, we have arranged a very special discount. Call the hotel and ask for the special CB rate. The cost of the banquet is only $29.99. Sign up today online at www.cbasc.com. See you there.

CBSC Board meets with Bert Downs
bertThe CBSC Board got together again to plan for the coming years of our association. We actually like the word, 'network,' better. Dr. Bert Downs, the Regional Executive Director (RED) from the Southwest, came to help us through the envisioning process that began up at Pine Summit this summer. We gathered at San Antonio Heights Community Church and narrowed down our association's goals for the future to Leadership Development, Church Health and Church Planting. The board's desire is to meet with many Pastors in our region to hear what they need, want and would find helpful in the future.

Financial Gift at Lake Elsinore
dave metzgerFinances have been tough for many churches this past year and Lakehills Church is one that has been hit hard. Pastor Dave Metzger said they were not sure how they were going to make it going into the next year. God answered many of the prayers of the members of their church by moving one of the members to donate $15,000 to the church just a few weeks ago. Pastor Dave said this member called his office and asked if he had some time to go to the bank. It's amazing how his schedule suddenly opened up. They also had some unanticipated financial income of $4,500, which totaled with the other gift, was 20% of their income. Thank God for these amazing gifts at the perfect time.

Apple Valley Adding Another Service
guitarPastor Chris Gillespie will add a Sunday evening service to an already busy Sunday. Apple Valley Baptist has three morning services and has run out of space. This new service is another opportunity for them to reach people who may enjoy something in the evening or a new style of music. The evening service will be a different message than the three morning services, but with much louder music, the message in the beginning with response opportunities at the end, communion every week, candles and more. The new services will start on January 11, 2010.

New Pastor at Calvary in Santa Barbara
christian sCalvary Baptist Church in Santa Barbara voted 111 to 1 to call Christian Schalesky as their next Senior Pastor. Christian was the Pastor of Teaching and Adult Ministries at Covenant Community Church in Goleta, right next to Santa Barbara. He grew up on the Central Coast and has lived in Santa Barbara for the last 12 years. He is a graduate of UCSB and Fuller Seminary. He is married to Jill and has two children, Calab and Audrey. He also loves the TV show '24,' the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, coffee, and reading good books on theology. He starts January 4, 2010.

Pastor Jay Pankratz's Dad Dies
sunsetPastor Jay's father went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 21.  Pastor Jay was with his father in Kansas and spoke at his memorial service the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Pastor Jay is the Senior Pastor of Sunrise Church in Rialto. His staff covered the two Sundays he was away. Our sympathies go out to Jay, his wife Carlita, and the rest of his family.

National Outreach Convention (NOC)
billGary Golike and Jim Smith attended the San Diego NOC in November. Art Valadaz of Sunrise Church agreed with Jim that this is a very practical and helpful convention--one of the best. Quite a few CB churches were represented: Greg Rhodes and the entire staff of Bethany Church in Long Beach; Steve Foster from New Song in Oceanside; Art Valadez and David Gaunt from Sunrise in Rialto; Mark Ambrose and staff from Pacific Coast in San Clemente; along with former CBSC'ers Jon and Kim Olson from San Jose and Greg Barnett from Santa Maria. If you have time next year during the first week of November, we highly recommended this conference. NOC Convention.

Spanish-language Seminary Classes Start

Seminary President Rod Wilson and Board Chairman Emilo Nuñez think this is a great opportunity for Spanish-speaking church members and leaders. The Bible Seminary of the Americas (Seminario de las Americas) is a small multi-site Seminary offering certificates and diplomas to its students throughout the Southern California area. Currently, fall quarter classes are completing course work in El Monte, Fontana, Bell Gardens and Anaheim. The 10-week evening courses are offered in Spanish one night a week. President Rod Wilson (also a member of the CBSC Board) is available to provide more information on enrolling or perhaps hosting a class in your area at 626.442.5500.

amy atkinsonBayview Baptist Church in Guam is proud of their Pastor's kid, Amy Atkinson, the oldest daughter of Pastor Greg and Terri Atkinson. Amy is a Biola junior defender on the Soccer team and has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 Women's Soccer College Division Team. Amy currently holds a 3.96 GPA in Liberal Studies and is the first women's soccer player from Biola to earn the all-district academic honors. She leads the Eagles in minutes played this season and is a huge part of Biola's defensive line.

To be nominated for all-district consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for her career. No athlete is eligible until having reached sophomore athletic and academic standing. Congratulations to Amy!

New Building Dedication
san antonioSan Antonio Heights Community Church received occupancy of their brand new fellowship hall, which was completely paid for by a generous gift from one of their members. The new building will be a well used space for their congregation. The dedication service is scheduled for December 30, 2009. The church recently added an additional service which led their total attendance to grow from 70 to 90! This is nearly a 25% growth rate. Not bad!!

Mentor Group Training
billBill Hoyt was the trainer for the joint meeting of CB leaders from across the country wanting to learn how to lead Mentor Groups in their area. Ed Reingrover and Jim Smith represented CBSC and hope to have more Mentor Groups going in Southern California by the beginning of next fall. L.E.A.D. (Learn, Encourage, Accountable, Dream) Groups are groups that meet to learn how to be better leaders.
