A Word From Jim
I love doing stuff and it's hard for me to say no sometimes. What a busy few weeks have just passed. My activities have included: speaking for San Antonio Heights Community Church's Men's Retreat; Sunrise Church Rialto's evening service; a few words at the International Baptist in Honolulu; CBAP Bienniel Conference in Manila, Philippines; Bayview Baptist in Guam; Calvary Baptist in Santa Barbara; and our Transforming Churches Conference in Riverside. I did a church assessment with Bill Hoyt up in San Francisco, am preparing for a revisioning session with our CBSC board and a revisioning meeting with CBAmerica in Chicago, and am trying to finish my dissertation for my doctorate. Financial burdens, camp issues and church concerns. My lovely wife, meanwhile, has had two root canals lately and now has to have oral surgery this week. My kids are moving and would like some help, my daughter changed jobs and needs counsel, Pastors call for jobs and advice, and the newsletter and a training seminar speed toward due dates. A late night visit to the hospital and subsequent doctors' visits say that I may have too much stress in my life now. Don't know exactly what my aliment is, but I need to take my own medicine and slow down somewhere. My staff agrees. So does Mark who records, "The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place." Mark 6:30-32. This Thanksgiving season, thank the Lord for a body that needs some rest, and take it.

Executive Director
PS: This does not apply to lazy people, they need to get moving! |

People
John Redman visits Mapleview Baptist On the weekend of September 18-20, Mapleview Baptist in Lakeside, CA celebrated their 50th anniversary. Hundreds of people attended the three-day celebration, with Christian Comedian Michael Jr. on Saturday night and over 400 packing out the church on Sunday. Former Mapleview Pastor and CBSC Executive Director John Redman with his wife, Anne, and current CBSC Director Jim Smith joined current Mapleview Pastor Ron Thomas during Sunday's activities. John Redman is living in Florida, teaching a huge Sunday School class and occasionally playing the organ and preaching at the church he is attending. To conclude the weekend, an actual MiG did a flyby on Sunday afternoon finishing the weekend with a literal "Boom."
Tony Pezzotta Speaks at World Impact
On Saturday, October 3, over 80 people came to hear Tony Pezzotta share his testimony and insights on Understanding Roman Catholicism. Tony spoke for three hours and answered questions following his presentation. Tony is doing well, although running a little slower while recovering from a rotator cuff surgery and diagnosed with the beginning signs of a Parkinson's-like disorder. World Impact videotaped the seminar and translated the session into Spanish.
Youth Pastors Getting Together
Eric Durso, Israel Gomez, John Hill, Jim Britts, Shane DeLisi, Tim Bradley, Zac Stringham and Chris Neal gathered for a CBSC sponsored Youth Pastors' forum at ECCU to share ideas and encourage each other in ministry and family. CB youth Pastors met again at the "More Than You Are" conference in Riverside to discuss their upcoming CB summer camp at Pine Summit, July 11 -15. If you have questions about next year's camp, contact John Hill at Sunrise Church.
Stan Ponz hosts Visit
Jim and Vicki visited International Baptist Church on their way to the Philippines and stayed in the IBC's guest room for several nights. Pastor Stan and his wife, Carol, were great hosts and have been at IBC for 5 years taking the church through some significant changes, both structurally, spiritually and physically. Recently some well needed physical improvements have blessed their church. First Baptist of Houston came over to help with a complete remodel of their old, but heavily used kitchen, and an individual donated 26K to install a much appreciated air conditioning system in their sanctuary. Pastor Stan has dreams of using his church as a possible base for church planting throughout the Hawaiian islands.
Jim Cook in Hawaii
Jim Cook was also at International Baptist Church during Jim and Vicki's visit. Jim Cook and his wife, Shirley, started International Baptist Church, the International Seminary at the church, a camp on Oahu and planted four churches on four different islands. He also was instrumental in planting Capital City Baptist Church in Manila. What a privilege to meet and talk with this great man of faith. James R. Cook gave me his autobiography entitled, "Under His Majesty's Command." It is a great missionary book! You can get a used copy from Amazon.

Philippines Trip
CBAP Biennial Conference 575 Pastors and wives and church leaders attended the 14th Biennial Conference of the Conservative Baptist Association of the Philippines. The conference was moved from the summer capital area of Bagio City in the mountains to Greenhills Christian Fellowship in Manila one week before the conference started due to flooding, landslides and road closures. Jim Smith was the keynote speaker and Vicki had a chance to speak to over 100 Pastors' wives. Pastor Gene Wood, from Grace Church Glendora, led a few seminars as well. The CBAP staff, under the capable leadership of Noel Pantoja, did an amazing job relocating the conference, finding a new meeting facility, making housing arrangements, arranging the catering, and communicating the change to over 500 pre-registered attendees. 100% of those registered showed up for the conference, with 65 registering at the door, even though many left their homes drying out from the floods.
Greenhills Christian Fellowship (GCF)
The host of the 14th Biennial CBAP conference was GCF, one of the largest CB churches in the world, with over 10,000 in attendance every weekend and 19 church plants throughout the Philippines. I had the privilege of meeting and enjoying several meals with Dr. Luis Pantoja, senior Pastor of GCF and his lovely wife, Li.
Filipino Relief Fund
CBSC recently sent $4,567 to the Philippines, funds received from various churches and individuals to assist CBAP in their relief efforts to flood victims. One Pastor I talked with came home to find the first-floor of his home completely under water and his three teenagers on the second floor with 2 feet of water rising beneath them. GCF bought 5 rafts to immediately go and assist flood victims near their church. Thanks to Bayview Baptist, Guam $2,500; Sunrise church, Rialto $1,500; and some generous individuals for your financial support. Grace Church Glendora also took a special offering for the Philippines relief and sent $10,000 directly to CBAP.

More Than We Are Conference
Leith Anderson Encourages Churches
At the Riverside Convention Center, 585 Pastors and church leaders from Transformation Ministries and CB Southern California gathered for a two-day "More Than We Are" conference on strengthening churches. Leith spoke four times, and breakout sessions were led by John Dix, Craig Allen, Jim Walden and Clay Ford. Christian Comedian Bob Stromberg gave us all something to laugh about during the Friday banquet. This was a profitable time for all who attended. Pastor Greg and Terri Atkinson from Bayview Baptist Church in Guam even made the trip to be at the conference and then catch a few Biola Soccer games where their daughter Amy plays.
One of Leith's talks was on: The Church's Effectiveness.
For a church to be effective it must be a church of...
1. Biblicial Christianity - teach truth, love and righteousness.
2. Cultural Relevancy. 3. Outward Orientation.

Silver is Number 1
Here is some meaningless trivia. F or cars, silver in its various shades is the most popular color, according to paint maker PPG industries. 25% of cars in the USA and more than a third in Asia and Europe are silver. White finsihed second with 18%, black third at 16% and red fourth at 12%. In 1994, green was the number one color. How things change. |
