TopA Word From Jim
Even Better
manhattan beachEvery year is it good to get away and talk about your mission, vision and action plans for the near future. Of course, we don't know what the future will bring, but we should do our best to make the most of the opportunities and resources we have been given. Our CB Board got away for a few days this summer up at Pine Summit to look ahead toward the coming year. I want to let you know that some very positive changes are in store for CB SoCal in the year ahead. Kinda like our upcoming fall conference "More Than We Are" with TM, the CB SoCal Board wants to "reinvent" itself and provide a greater level of invaluable service to CB churches in our region. CB SoCal churches will be required to take on the support of our Association - as it is with most other church affiliations. The Board met with Dr. Buck Rogers (yes, that is his name) of Church Resource Ministries as our facilitator to start to put together a plan for the Association's new look and approach. Though in its infancy stages, the major themes of the plan have been formulated and are truly exciting. The plan is to build a new life for CB SoCal that will better serve the churches and powerfully bring them together by partnering together around four commitments:

1)  Church planting in our region

2)  Church health for our region (i.e.. assessments, governance and board/pastor relations, pastoral placement)

3)  Pastoral development (i.e.. caring for CB pastors emotionally and spiritually, pastoral mentoring groups, ongoing professional training, etc.)

4)  Networking (i.e. serving as a resource finder for churches seeking specialized services from other Christian ministries that CB SoCal doesn't provide)

Please pray for us as we work together to help bring about a brighter day for CB churches in our region seeking to be spiritually healthy and experience conversion growth.

News
Helping the Hungry in the Inland Empire
food bankFifteen years ago, one man from Community Baptist Church in Rancho Cucamonga started an independant food bank called GAP (God Always Provides). Now the GAP is located in a 4,500 sq. ft. warehouse equipped with a truck for large donation pickups, a forklift, and walk-in freezer and refrigerator. The GAP Food Bank provides basic food items to approximately 350 families consisting of approximately 1,500 individuals in the community per week. The GAP also supplies food to other local food banks and churches that are assisting needy families in the community as well. The average value of the food that is given to each family is between $75 and $100 per week, which amounts to over $1.25 million in food provided to the community per year. Approximately 65 volunteers come each week to help. The GAP was recently featured on a FoxNews and NY Times video. Feel free to contact Director Pari Blackman at (909) 945-1020 (office) or (909) 228-9647 (cell), or pari@gapfoodbank.org, for additional information. It's amazing what one person can do. Check them out at www.gapfoodbank.org.

Dr. Stephen LeBar Resigns CBAmerica
steve LeBarDr. LeBar submitted his resignation as Executive Director of CBAmerica. The Executive Committee has asked him to continue to serve through our January Board meetings, if possible, to facilitate a smooth transition. Stephen and Cathy are seeking God's direction for his next ministry chapter--his first inclination is toward local church involvement as Senior Pastor. The CBAmerica model that was created in the spring of 2004 is continuing to evolve, and Stephen felt that the transitioning he was called to lead had taken place. In the next phase, there will need to be adjustments of structure and roles. He is stepping aside to empower that process. Stephen writes, "At this point I feel strongly that God has released me from the leadership of CBAmerica. It is increasingly clear that the task for which I was employed has been completed, and with that sense of accomplishment, it is time for me to distance myself from the next stage. We anticipate even more effectiveness between and among the member Regions as the relational model of trust and interdependence is further developed, and we will pray with you to that end. Thank you for the privilege of serving you through these years of change and fresh vision."

Northern California Transition
stick figuresPaul Null, Director of Next Generation Churches (CB Northern California), will step down from his position on August 30. His board of directors graciously made it possible for him to finish his time with Next Generation Churches several months before he had originally agreed upon so that he and Renee could move back to their home in Salem, Oregon. He is chomping at the bit to be near his family again, especially those grandkids. Stephen LeBar will act as the CBAmerica Regional Assessment Team Representative with a three-month commitment to the Region as they work to select the Transitional Leadership Team of seven. The selection of the Transition Executive Director will be a crucial process, and they covet your prayers for God's wisdom and direction. Although Paul's battle with cancer is ongoing, he will loook for a new ministry in the Salem area. Not only will his presence be missed in Northern California, his thoughtful and humorous input on the national level among the Regional Executive Directors will be deeply missed. Take care Paul.

Journey of Faith Building Around the World
manhattan beachJourney of Faith Church in Manhattan Beach will dedicate their new educational building on September 13, 2009. This new 6.5 million, 18,000 square foot building will include vibrant, 3-D learning environments for children and state-of-the-art rooms for adults. People will literally enter through the door of a massive ship, then wander into a Disneyland-like world of jungles, cartoons and video games. What is even more exciting, is that the church also donated 10% of their building contributions to help missionary groups around the world. In Mongolia they are building a new Bible College, a very rare and exciting opportunity. In China they are building a church in the Yangxin Province. This will be the first Christian church in the entire Province. In the Philippines they are building a science wing for a Christian school, which primarily educates children of missionaries. In India they are building a new school for the Dalit children, considered the poorest of poor within their own society. In Africa they are building a church and medical center that will provide life-saving medical assistance for AIDS victims.

Sunrise Continues Growing in the Summer
sunriseSunrise Church in Rialto has seen attendance grow more than ever before. They had 600 new people start attending their church in August, the fastest growing month of the year, outside of March, which had Easter. They now have an average weekly attendance of over 5,000. Why? Not sure. They had a series on "Fireproofing Your Marriage" in July, but mainly, Pastor Jay says, is that they are focusing on creating an atmosphere of love and acceptance. They do know why their youth group has doubled in three months...they have tightened up on security and discipline in the youth program. It's working!

Cornerstone in Big Bear hosts first VBS  food bankWhen you're a small church, hosting a VBS is a huge undertaking. Seven months ago, Cornerstone Christian Fellowship moved into the old post office building in town. This summer they decided to hold a VBS program for up to 35. Pastor Barry Stever said that "God brought us 35 youngster on our busiest day, with the theme SonRock Kids Camp." As a result of this outreach/ministry, they have three families that are considering attending Cornerstone.

Back to Church Sunday
back to churchGod will grow his church, and he has asked us to be His instuments. A large percent of people who don't attend church would consider attending if they were only asked. However, only 2% of those attending church invite an unchurched friend to attend church with them. A national event is trying to change that. September 13, 2009 is National Back to Church Sunday. Tools are available that may inspire people in your church to reach out to those they know. Take advantage of the impact of hundreds of churches joining together to invite people back to church on one particular day! Check out the web page for more information.

Good, But Lost
Understanding Roman Catholicism
good but lostOn Saturday, October 3rd, CB Southern California and World Impact of Los Angeles will co-sponsor a one-day seminar on understanding Roman Catholics and how to reach them. Former Roman Catholic Priest and current CB Ethnic Ministries Director Dr. Tony Pezzotta will lead this seminar and then allow time to answer questions. He studied fifteen years in Roman Catholic seminaries of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Italy, England, Spain and Germany. He was ordained a Catholic priest on February 11, 1961 in Turin by His Eminence Cardinal Maurilio Fossati, then Archbishop of the diocese. On February 26, 1974, after studying the Scriptures on his own, and through the testimony of Rev. Ernesto Montealegre, a Filipino Baptist pastor, Tony (as he likes to be called) trusted Christ alone as Savior and Lord of his life. The seminar will be from 9:00am - 1:00pm at the World Impact Campus in Los Angeles (Interstate 10 and Vermont Ave). Cost is only $10 (includes lunch and material). Sign up on our web site.

Handling Conflict Well
November 3
angryDo you love ministering for the Lord but grow weary of all of the conflicts and "difficult people" in your congregation? Peace is possible! But it doesn't just happen by chance. It takes a Christ-centered, gospel-focused, biblical theology of conflict resolution to help your people to work through their conflicts in a redemptive manner. This luncheon will provide much of what you need to embrace and begin to develop a culture of peace where members truly live out the gospel in their relationships and regularly experience the blessings of peace: strengthened marriages and families, healthier churches, and a thriving, gospel-centered ministry.

Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day, vote early and then come)
9:30am -2:30pm - Cost is only $20 and includes lunch.

dana danielsOur annual comedy night is set for Monday night, December 7, 2009 at the Wyndham in Costa Mesa (one block from South Coast Plaza) with Mr. Dana Daniels. You will love watching
Dana, teamed with his "psychic" parrot Luigi, performing "off-the-wall" illusions blended with rapid-fire comedy and audience participation. Dana's many television appearances include Evening at the Improv, the CBS morning show, Masters of Illusions and Lance Burton's Taking it to the Streets. We've seen him at the Outreach Convention in San Diego and we are bringing him to you. Cost is $29 per person and discounted rates are available for those who would like to stay overnight.

Just the Numbers
Social Communication
stick figuresFor the first time, more people are spending time online at social networking sites and blogs than they are with personal emails according to Nielsen Company. The number of minutes spent on Facebook alone jumped an astronomical 566%, from 3.1 billion in 2007 to 20.5 billion in 2008.

Where's the Faith?
stick figuresAccording to Gallup, the percentage of residents who said religion is an important part of their daily lives is lowest in Vermont (42%), New Hampshire (46%), Maine and Massachusetts (48%), Alaska (51%) and highest in Mississippi (85%), Alabama (82%), South Carolina (80%), Tennesee (79%) and Louisana (78%).

Enrollment Drops in Christian Schools
acsiAccording to an article in Christianity Today's August edition, enrollment in Southern California's ACSI schools dropped more than 9% in 2009. This is the lowest ACSI SoCal's Regional Director Jerry Haddock has seen in his 22 years. Nationwide, enrollment has dropped 5% with school closings up 33%. The one bright spot, many qualified school teachers in CA are available to teach.

True Story of Islamic Rule and Women
manhattan beachWhile speaking at First Baptist Church, West LA, I met a man who recently produced a harrowing true story about Soraya M, and the terrible circumstances of her death. The shocking story exposes the dark power of mob rule, uncivil law, and the utter lack of human rights for women under Islamic law. Her last and only hope for some measure of justice lies in the hands of the journalist who must escape with the story--and his life--so the whole world will know. It's hard to find, but worth the effort.

To Save A Life
manhattan beachJim Britts, youth Pastor of New Song Community Church in Oceanside wrote and directed this realistic portrayal of student life. To Save a Life is the story of Jake Taylor, star athelete and ladies man. His life is perfect and popular, but that ideal life comes at the expense of his childhood friend Roger Dawson. Roger takes his own life in a tragic school shooting that sends Jake's life spiraling out of control and sets the stage for his last few challenging months of high school and a journey that will change his life forever. The release date is set for January 2010.
