A Word From Jim |

Empty Nesters
Well, that time has come. We are soon to join the ranks of the empty nesters. This month, Vicki and I will travel to Chicago to drop off our youngest at college. As they have before, tears will come, but this time it's for our last of four children. Andy will be a freshman at the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. It is a great school, and he has plans to be a youth pastor when he completes his formal education. We enjoyed our parenting days. Like so many before us said, time flew by. We hopefully improved in our parenting skills as time went by, and as each of our four kids brought into our world their own unique personalities, we learned how to change. We learned much from our parents, and appreciated the experience they had and invested into our family. Years made us hopefully wiser and softer. We grabbed some good ides from friends and made them a part of our family traditions. We also had help. Paul wrote to the Philippian church, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." (Phil 2:4) We appreciated the input from many people we met along the journey of parenting. If you 're trying to do it all by yourself, don't. Invite quality people into your life. We feel good about the way our kids turned out, and all the glory goes to God. We also have to say thanks to a few people who helped. Thanks to Grandparents Smith and Sutter, Uncles Dan, Eric, Scott and Kevin, Aunts Cathy, Sharon and Ginni, Pastor Boyer, Pastor Hay and Pastor Jay. There were a multitude of support staff, Awana workers, youth sponsors, and good friends like Nate, Luke and Wicks. Thanks to Youth Pastors John and Matt, sisters Amy, Emily and Ashley, Brother-in-laws Aaron, Nick and Eric and to all the others I have forgotten to mention. Thanks to the ipod sermons he listened to from Francis Chan, Mark Driscoll, Andy Stanley, John MacArthur, John Piper and Rob Bell, to name a few. We listened to Focus on the Family and good sermons, read good books and did our best. But what helped the most was prayer. Every night we prayed for wisdom and for each of our kids by name. We still do. James wrote that if "any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives generoulsy to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5) We'll never stop being parents, but the circumstances have changed. Maybe we'll be grandparents some day. Change is good, but hard. It's a good thing we don't take a congregational vote about our kids leaving home to attend college 2,000 miles away. I'll miss the noise, the multiple schedules, the drama, the discipline, but we're now looking forward to this new chapter of life. You all have a part in someone's parenting--use your time wisely, and thanks for the investment. Remember, keep investing into the lives of others.

John Nagle going to Seattle Area
Pastor John Nagle of Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo has accepted a call from Faith Baptist Church of Kent, Washington to become their new lead Pastor. His last Sunday in the pulpit at MHC was July 26. He starts in Kent in a few months. Kent is in the southern part of the greater Seattle area and Faith is part of 'Converge,' formerly known as the Baptist General Conference. John wrote in his letter to the church that he and his wife Becky have sensed "that we have accomplished what it was that the Lord wanted us to do at MHC. My last 4+ years at MHC have primarily been about making overall changes in the direction and ministry approach of the church as a whole." MHC is in the very capable hands of their Associate Pastor, Doug Boyd, who has been asked to lead and preach as the Interim Senior Pastor. The current staff is remaining in place and is ready to support the leadership of Doug and the elders. Work is already underway to put together a "search team" of godly men and women who will spearhead the search for a new senior pastor at the direction of the Board. We at CB Southern California will miss John's inquisitive mind and ability to articulate difficult ideas in understandable terms as he faithfully served on the CBSC board.
TJ McCall called to Monterey Area
TJ McCall and his wife, Jessica, along with their two boys, were great additions to First Baptist Church in Commerce, where TJ served as the part-time Pastor while working full-time as Bible Teacher and Internet/Technology Director at Sonrise Christian School in San Dimas. Unfortunately, Sonrise had to reduce TJ's time at the school for budgetary reasons. At the same time, First Baptist Church of Seaside, affiliated with Next Generation churches (Northern Cal CB), contacted him and invited him to consider coming to Seaside as their Pastor. This past month, they voted to call TJ as their next Pastor. TJ's last Sunday at Commerce was July 12. Commerce will have John Miller filling their pulpit as they search for their next Pastor. We will miss TJ, Jessica and the family, and pray for God's blessings upon them in Seaside.

San Diego Marines Getting Saved
Phil Smith is a retired Air force Reserve chaplain living in Carlsbad, CA. Although retired, he still goes, and brings other laymen from his church with him, to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego to minister with the Navy Chaplain. The weekly service averages about 500 recruits each week. The service begins with 15 minutes to be quiet, read the Bible, meditate, pray, or just be still. The leader explains to them that if they would like to have someone to talk to or pray for them, there is a prayer team standing in the back of the chapel and they are welcome to get up and go to them at any time during the service. Immediately, there are usually 5-7 recruits that come back to talk to one of the team. Phil says, "I have had marines come running to me, weeping from heavy burdens or problems. During the rest of the service, young marines will come back to one of us on the prayer team. We have the privilege to pray with them about their burden, to counsel them, to encourage them with the Word." The service is really geared to the young marines. They love singing the contemporary choruses, and oh how they sing. The chaplain conducts communion and baptism every Sunday. There is a baptismal right on the platform for Immersion Baptizing. There is any where from 5 to 25 men (New Believers) baptized each Sunday. Last week 22 marines accepted Christ. Three weeks ago there were 75 marines from one company who accepted Christ. Last summer there were two weeks in a row with over 100 decisions for Christ. God is doing some wonderful work in the lives of these young Marines. Please hold this ministry in prayer and encourage others to pray also. For more information on CB Chaplaincy, contact Rev. Allen Russell at chapruss@earthlink.net. Back to top. |
Back to Church Sunday God will grow his church, and he has asked us to be His instuments. A large percent of people who don't attend church would consider attending if they were only asked. However, only 2% of those attending church invite an unchurched friend to attend church with them. A national event is trying to change that. September 13, 2009 is National Back to Church Sunday. Tools are available that may inspire people in your church to reach out to those they know. Take advantage of the impact of hundreds of churches joining together to invite people back to church on one particular day! Check out the web page for more information.
"Did You Know" YouTube Video
YouTube is filled with a wide variety of videos. Recently, our North Central CBA Executive Director, Don Shaw, had one of the Pastors in his region send him this video. We thought it was interesting enough to sent it to you, in case you haven't seen it yet. It is about how fast the planet is changing, so by the time you see it, some of the facts will be out of date! See if you knew all these facts...Did you Know?
Movie Night Under The Stars Invite the neighbors. On Saturday, August 1, 7:00-9:30pm, Community Baptist Church of Rancho Cucamonga will host a neighborhood summer celebration. Activities take place from 7:00-8:00pm, and then the movie begins at 8:00pm. They have music, face painting, popcorn, snacks, and a movie on the lawn, under the stars! Sunrise Church also showed the family movie, "Hotel for Dogs," and most recently, "Fireproof." Movie night is a great way to introduce your church to the neighborhood.
Free Phone System
Hope Again has recently changed their phone system and wants to donate their old one to a church or organization. They will donate their Lucent Partner Advance Communication System with 9 compatible phones, all with a microphone, speaker, intercom, multiple extensions and lines. Call Hope Again at 323.661.4004 and ask for Ross Lokken, their Executive Director. First come, first served.

In 2006, Rev. Noel Pantoja, General Director of the Conservative Baptist Association of the Philippines (CBOP), met Jim Smith and other church leaders here in Southern California. CBOP and CBAmerica are part of the growing CBGlobal assocation. Recently, Rev. Pantoja invited Jim to be the guest speaker at CBOP's bi-annual meeting October 14-17, 2009. Jim's wife, Vicki, has also been invtied to speak to the women. This is a great opportunity to meet our CB brothers and sisters on the other side of the world and encourage them in the Word. The meeting will be held in Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines. Taking advantages of flying over the Pacific, Jim and Vicki will visit our CB churches in Hawaii and Guam before returning just in time for our fall conference in Riverside, October 21-22.
Pinoy Fellowship
Did you know that Filipinos usually refer to themselves informally as Pinoy or sometimes the feminine Pinay? The word is formed by taking the last four letters of Filipino and adding a "y." CB Pastor Pol Pili, (second from the right) of the Fil-Am Church in Long Beach started this group which meets monthly. Recently, they had Mayor Jim Dear of Carson (in the suit), meet with them during a recent Pinoy Pastors' Fellowship. The PPF have agreed to prepare a community Filipino Fiesta coupled with a health fair and featuring health food options. Pastors in Sounthern California are welcome to join. Call Pastor Pol Pili: 562-492-9616.

Understanding Roman Catholicism
On Saturday, October 3rd, CB Southern California and World Impact of Los Angeles will co-sponsor a one-day seminar on understanding Roman Catholics and how to reach them. Former Roman Catholic Priest and current CB Ethnic Ministries Director Dr. Tony Pezzotta will lead this seminar and then allow time to answer questions. He studied fifteen years in Roman Catholic seminaries of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Italy, England, Spain and Germany. He was ordained a Catholic priest on February 11, 1961 in Turin by His Eminence Cardinal Maurilio Fossati, then Archbishop of the diocese. On February 26, 1974, after studying the Scriptures on his own, and through the testimony of Rev. Ernesto Montealegre, a Filipino Baptist pastor, Tony (as he likes to be called) trusted Christ alone as Savior and Lord of his life. The seminar will be from 9:00am - 1:00pm at the World Impact Campus in Los Angeles (Interstate 10 and Vermont Ave). Cost is only $10 (includes lunch and material). Sign up on our web site.

Handling Conflict Well
Do you love ministering for the Lord but grow weary of all of the conflicts and "difficult people" in your congregation? Peace is possible! But it doesn't just happen by chance. It takes a Christ-centered, gospel-focused, biblical theology of conflict resolution to help your people to work through their conflicts in a redemptive manner. This luncheon will provide much of what you need to embrace and begin to develop a culture of peace where members truly live out the gospel in their relationships and regularly experience the blessings of peace: strengthened marriages and families, healthier churches, and a thriving, gospel-centered ministry.
Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day, vote early and then come) 9:30am -2:30pm - Cost is only $20 and includes lunch. NewSong Church, San Dimas

CBA Summer Summit:
Church Ministry Mapping
During the first week of July, many CB Pastors, board and staff members, plus all the Regional Executive Directors met at the Group Publishing Headquasters in Loveland, CO with Dr. Bill Hoyt for a two-day training on Ministry Mapping. This discipline helps churches put into action their mission and vision for the church. The mapping process, done well, leads a church to truly understand its core beliefs, the values that flow from those beliefs, the church's mission related to beliefs and values, a clear and concise vision for fulfilling the mission and a focus that lets the church measure what it does based on its contribution to the vision. This training was a follow- up to last year's church assessment training. We are prepared to assess our churches on their strengths and then walk the staff and board through the crutial envisioning time as they look to the future. Please call our office to schedule an assesment or envisioning time, or both. We're here to equip and encourage you. CBSC: 909-944-5900. Bethany Church of Long Beach has also recently gone through an assessment processs that they developed and would be willing to share their experiences with you. Contact Missions Pastor Scott Foster at 562-413-2466.
Harvest Crusade
Celebrating 20 years of Harvest Crusades, Greg Laurie will again visit Angels Stadium in Anaheim August 14-16. Special musical guests include Chris Tomlim, Reliant K, Third Day, Skillet and the Katinas. Admission is free, although there is a $10 parking fee around the staduim or $5 across Orangewood Avenue. This is a great outreach event to invite your friends to attend with you.

Free Energy Savings
San Antonio Heights Community Church recently upgraded their facilities to be more energy efficient and will save some money in the process, all for free. Out of the blue, Southern California Edison came to them and offered a free energy savings analysis, free products and installation! Really, it was free. Pastor Chuck McCement said, "They replaced all our classroom lighting. New Balsts, new bulbs! Now our classrooms are better lit and costing less." Your church can save energy, money and help save the environment by participating in SCE's Direct Install Program. The Direct Install Program is part of California statewide initiative to increase participation in Energy Efficiency programs to non-profit organizations. This effortless program provides smaller businesses with FREE energy efficient products, and includes free installation and long-term energy savings with no underlying costs. You may contact SAHCC at nita@sahcc.com to hear more or contact Southern California Edison about the Direct Install Program or call 1.800.736.4777 to see if you qualify.
Insurance Savings
Recently, CB Southern California switched to Brotherhood Mutual Insurance for a number of our needs. Brotherhood Mutual is headquartered in Fort Wayne, IN and only recently moved into California. They deal exclusively with evangelical churches. We saved 11% on our property and liability insurance with better coverage, 51% on our vehicle insurance and 31% on our workmans comp. With these significant savings, we wanted to pass this information on to you. We are pleased to infom you that we are part of their partnership Group Program and have encouraged one of their agents to contact you to see if this would be of benefit to you. This is a voluntary program and you are under no obligation, but we thought it might be worth a look.
If you are not contacted by brotherhood, you may want to contact an agent near you:
