Staycation
bbq
The term "staycation" means staying at home for vacation. This idea has become more popular in the last few years as travel costs have increased and disposable income has decreased due to job losses and other financial hardships. Instead of spending lots of time, money and energy in traveling to another area, many people are finding fun and relaxation close to home. Howard Dayton, co-founder of Crown Financial Ministries makes a few suggestions:
PLAN AHEAD
Set a budget just as you would for a normal vacation. It would be easy to go overboard and overspend, and that defeats the purpose.
MAKE A LIST
Be realistic about what you can do in a day, and be sure to schedule some down time so that you don't go back to work more tired than when you left.
THINGS TO AVOID
-- Do not do things you would normally do, such as running errands.
-- Do not check in with work.
-- Do not work on projects around the house.

TopA Word From Jim
Biblical and Political
4th of julyWell, Happy 4th of July. I hope you get to enjoy some good family time and fireworks. I love fireworks. We usually go down to the San Clemente Pier to visit my daughter and son-in-law and watch the fireworks from the beach. We are a privileged country in many ways, and even with our problems, I am proud to be an American. I don't like paying taxes, but I have to--the Bible says, "Pay your taxes." (Romans 13:6) I don't always like what Obama and our government decides, but I "must submit to governing authorities, for all authority comes from God." (Romans 13:1) However, not all that is legal is Biblical. I've heard of some people who quietly voted for Prop 8 but didn't want to let people know how they voted. Really? Striving to be politically neutral while the issue is obviously biblical should be a time when we speak up. In this country, we still can do that. Come on, when you have a chance, take a stand. Let your convictions be heard. You have beliefs, speak up. Abortion and homosexual marriages in some states are legal, but not biblical. There are times we need to be biblically correct more than politically correct. There are times we have to mix politics with the church, because they already are mixed together. Just because it's political doesn't mean it's not biblical. We are called to be "ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us." (1 Cor.5:20) Take a stand for all that is honoring to God. July the 4th is when we celebrate our independence from England. It's also a time to celebrate the fact that Jimwe are dependent on God, that he has brought us into his family and that he wants to make his appeal through us. Can those around you hear what God saying? When the time is right, speak up!

Churches
Pastor Dave411 Prayer Plan
Pastor David Stanley of Fellowship Baptist in Riverside has developed a simple and effective prayer ministry at his church. They call it the
411-Fast, based on the phone number you can call to get connected to others. For those involved in this ministry, every 4th and 11th day of each month, members will connect with God and pray through a monthly list of needs for the church and individuals. That's it, but it seems to work.

Three to be Free
Pastor Joe LoMusio of Temple Baptist Church of Fullerton has challenged all members and regular attendees to write down the names of three people on a special bookmarker that has been provided. These three people - family members, friends, fellow-workers, neighbors, acquaintances, etc., will be brought before the Lord regularly in prayer with the belief that lives will be changed and loved ones and friends will be saved. TBC had a recent baptismal ceremony where eight people, including six adults, followed Christ in baptism, including all those who came to Christ in the past month. The church was packed with family and friends and the entire worship experience was a blessing.

Summer Lecture Series
The Huntington Beach Bible Institute in cooperation with bbqCalvary Baptist Church Huntington Beach is hosting a summer lecture series during the month of July 2009. The series, entitled "What is Truth?" will focus on two significant issues important to our Christian faith.

Sunday - July 19:  The Case for Life: Equipping Christians to Engage the Culture with Mr. Scott Klusendorf
Sunday - July 26:  Homosexuality and Truth with Mr. Joe Dallas

6:00-8:00 pm, Calvary Baptist Church, 8281 Garfield Avenue, Huntington Beach, Free Admission, Child care provided · (714) 962-6860. A complete event brochure is available on-line at HBI.

Church Meeting in Parking Lot
While New Life Christian Fellowship continues to look for a building to rent, they are making an obvious impact in their community by meeting in a parking lot every Sunday morning. Several members live in an apartment complex and after gaining permission, they set up just outside their doors. The commute is great! Pastor Al Galvan said some people walking by have stopped in to see what's going on. One lady stopped while walking her dog. Both stayed for the rest of the service. One man even offered several "easy-ups" for shade. New Life is making the best of their situation. Pray for Pastor Al (agalvan184@aol.com) as he and his Elders look for a place to rent.

Growing in Alpine
Montainview Bible Church of Alpine is currently meeting at the Shadow Hills Elementary School in Alpine after a temporary relocation to the Women's Club in town. Pastors Eric Motl and Jon Lutz have led their church well through these changes. They are doing better financially than budgeted and are averaging  over 100 each week. CB Southern California recently helped this church plant with sound and music equipment, along with other helpful assets that CBSC was storing at Rancho Baptist in Temucula. They are planning their first MVBC "Concert in the Park" which will be held at the Alpine Community Center Park on Saturday, August 22, 3-7 pm. There will be free food, uplifting music, a gospel presentation, and lots of FUN!

Party in Ranchobbq
Community Baptist Church in Rancho Cucamonga is having a Backyard BBQ on Saturday, July 18, 3:00-7:00 pm on their campus. They are inviting all their neighbors to a BBQ / game night and will be serving up great food, games, and live music!  Church members are signing-up to bring a dish, volunteering to help, and getting flyers out to neighbors and friends. For more information, contact Kathy: 909.945.5001 x260.

Debating Christianity
Bob Siegel has been associated with CBSC for a number of years with Sojourners Christian Fellowship, a college Bible Study group. Along with several Bible studies and speaking engagements, the majority of his time is dedicated to a radio ministry and blog site. Through this ministry, he has many opportunities to speak. Recently, he was invited to debate Christianity with a Muslim leader in Upland and with atheist Eddie Tabash in San Deigo. The debate with atheist Eddie Tabash (held at Skyline Church in San Diego on a Thursday evening) was packed with at least 600 people! This included Christians from all over the community as well as the local Atheist/Humanist societies who were invited to attend. He had a chance to speak with several skeptics afterwards who admitted that he had given them much to think about. One skeptic even commented that he was now only an inch away from Christianity as a result of this debate. Check out his web page  and his blog.

Church Recomendations
Church Assessment
StethPhysical checkups are good for everyone. Usually once a year is a suggested routine. A church check-up is also good for everyone involved. It can reveal your strengths and weaknesses, providing means to maintain health and effectiveness in the years to come. Often you need outside observations to accurately reveal what is going on in the church. We at CBSC feel very strongly that each of our churches should have a church health assessment as often as you have a financial audit.  Please contact our office to find out how we may help you start your church assessment process. To demonstrate our commitment to growing healthy churches, we are offering a free assessment to the first CB member church over 200 who calls our office. 909.944.5900.

Intruders Plan
bodyguardWe strongly recommend that all our churches have a safety plan or Intruder Plan in place. With the murdur of Doctor George Tiller in June in the lobby of the Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas churches should be prepared to take action. With activists against Prop 8 and other issues, Pacific Justice says the battle may show up at your church. They strongly recommend that you should have an Intruders Plan for your ushers and/or security team. Here are some ideas: ask the intruders to stop, ask them to leave, and call 911. Have one person in charge of each service in case of an Intruder. Have a policemen assist in the training. In addition to  your Safety or Intruder Plan, click here for a sample Church Conduct Policy.

Spotlight on Missions
Moving to Madagascar
bbqNicole Rauch is scheduled to leave LAX on July 29 for Madagascar to serve with WorldVenture as a career missionary. She has spent four years raising money, attending training and orientation classes, taking stress levels tests, and communication, value and chaos assessments. She's ready to go. Ahead of her is two years of language and cultural training before she begins her position as short-term missions facilitator in Madagascar. Madagascar is a huge island nation just east of Africa. Nicole has one more hurdle to jump. In the next month she needs $18,000 for outgoing expenses. If you can help, please visit her blog or her WorldVenture web page, where you can donate online.

Wireless Tower Income
You might want to think about this. A few churches have generated some revenue by allowing cell towers to be placed on their property. Companies wanting to place towers negotiate leases for installation sites that they service and maintain. Pastors emphasize that having someone to negotiate the contract on the church's behalf is critical, as is ensuring that the contract is set up so there are no tax consequences. We would recommend using an attorney who is familiar with cell tower contracts. Call our office if you need a recommendation. 909.944.5900.

Harvest Crusade
Celebrating 20 years of Harvest Crusades, Greg Laurie will again visit Angels Stadium in Anaheim August 14-16. Special musical guests include Chris Tomlim, Reliant K, Third Day, Skillet and the Katinas. Admission is free, although there is a $10 parking fee around the staduim or $5 across Orangewood Avenue. This is a great outreach event to invite your friends to attend.

Insurance Savings
bbqRecently, CB Southern California switched to Brotherhood Mutual Insurance for a number of our needs. Brotherhood Mutual is headquartered in Fort Wayne, IN and only recently moved into California. They deal exclusively with evangelical churches. We saved 11% on our property and liability insurance with better coverage, 51% on our vehicle insurance and 31% on our workmans comp. With these significant savings, we wanted to pass this information on to you. We are pleased to infom you that we are part of their partnership Group Program and have encouraged one of their agents to contact you to see if this would be of benefit to you. This is a voluntary program and you are under no obligation, but we thought it might be worth a look.
