TopA Word From Jim
CB PeopleA Six-County Day
What's an average day look like for you? Have you ever been asked that? If you're like me, most days are never the same. Some are relaxing, some are eventful, some are encouraging, discouraging, full of drama, nothing scheduled gets done, everything unexpected happens, and some days are a little of all or none of the above. It's kinda fun. Thursday, May 14th was one of those busy days and inlcuded approximately 343 miles of driving through six southern California counties. Here's what it looked like:

6:19 am The alarm goes off and I attempt to wake up. Devotions, shower, dress, breakfast.
7:25 am  Take my son to school and off to our Rancho Cucamonga office in San Bernardino County near the Ontario airport.
8:30 am Leave to meet Pastor TJ McCall at a School Open House in San Dimas, Los Angeles County, where he teaches full time. He is also Senior Pastor of our church in Commerce.
11:00 am Leave for Pastors' Mentoring Group Luncheon in Oceanside, San Diego County, driving south on the 57 through Orange County. Using my blue tooth earpiece, I check in with our office and then call Gregory Hooper; Tami Harris; Ernie Fierro, about our Men's Retreat; and several others about our upcoming Mentoring Group.
12:30 pm Arrive to join 11 Pastors at our Oceanside Mentoring Group. This month we had Ron Thomas, Matt Hsieh, Lew Dawson, Richard Phillips, Phil Waters, Gary Golike, Dave Metzger, Bill Thrall, Mike, Nick Greenwood, myself and Hal Seed around the table. I talked a little about church assessments and then Hal taught on Capturing Hills. Great stuff. Afterwards, several guys hung around to talk a little more about different things.
3:00 pm Join some Pastors, Dave Metgzer and Phil Waters for a quick 9-hole golf game. Good chance to continue some conversation and practice humility while missing many putts.
5:00 pm Swing by my daughter and son-in-laws' place in Fallbrook for dinner, Ashley and Eric Durso, before they go to the First Baptist Church for praise band practice. I get a call from my eldest daughter who has been re-adjusting to life without her husband who abandoned her last fall. She's just been in a serious car accident. She's ok, but the car, our car we loaned to her, has probably been totaled. (It was.)Accident
6:30 pm Take off up the 15, through Riverside, SB and LA counties, to pick up my daughter, Amy, in Simi Valley, Ventura County. She stays at our home on weekends, and since I am going up to Men's Retreat on Friday and she now has no car, I need to help her with transportation and bring her back to our home for the weekend. She calls work to explain why she won't be in, and I arrive around 8:15.
8:45 pm After thanking the family she is staying with for their assistance during the accident (they went to the accident to help and bring Amy back to their home) we left.
10:00 pm Arrive home, rest and get ready for tomorrow's Men's Retreat.
Whew, but this was a bit extraordinary.

Churches
New Song Ordains Staff Member
CB PeoplePastor Hal Seed and Edwin Samson celebrate Edwin's Ordination. New Song Community Church in Oceanside ordained Edwin Samson as a minister of the gospel this past month. Edwin and his wife, Amy, plan to plant a church in the Philippines in the near future. A postcard invitation first drew Edwin to New Song while he was at Camp Pendleton. He received Christ through the ministry of the church, and after his military service was completed, he got involved at New Song and attended Biola and Fuller Seminary. As his faith deepened, he sensed a desire to serve God overseas. New Song contacted CB Southern California to begin the Ordination process for Edwin. Dr. Tony Pezzotta (CBSC) and Pastor Todd Marcy, from Sunrise Wrightwood, assisted in his doctrinal statement. Edwin received a recommendation from the CB Ordination Preparation Committee prior to his ordination at New Song.

Mission Hills Youth Build a House
CB PeopleLast month, Youth Pastor Danny Bowers, of Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo, took a group of students and sponsors down to Mexico to help Amor Ministries build a community of 600 homes by the end of June. The project helped those relocated by the Mexican government because of the Drug Cartel violence. Danny's Group built one 11x22 house and delivered a gift package of pillows, blankets and food. You may contact Danny and also see a video of their trip at his blogspot at http://www.mhcstudents.blogspot.com/.

Wife Reunited with Husband
CB PeopleLast year, we mentioned that Pastor George Chakarji of Iglesia Bautista de Bell in Cudahy was married to Luz Estrella on June 21, 2008 in Bogota, Columbia. However, after the wedding, Luz was unable to return to the states with George, but instead had to wait for US immigration to process her to move to Southern California. We now have good news! Luz recently arrived in the US, and the reunited couple are very happy. Pastor George is enjoying rediscovering Southern California with his wife. Their church recently had five people come to the Lord and baptized three young ladies.

Grace Church Holds Forum on China
CB PeopleOn Saturday, May 2, Grace Church of Glendora held a banquet for those interested in the work of the church in China. Several Christian leaders from China were present and spent almost 45 minutes answering questions from the audience. Senior Pastor Gene Wood encouraged those present not to be afraid of asking the hard questions. Questions like, "Why are there so many women Pastors? Why does the government persecute those who don't register? Why do some not feel comfortable registering with the government and others do?" The answers were open and honest, enlightening and encouraging. Grace for Asia, a ministry of Grace Church, continues to send teams into China to distribute free Bibles, legally, to those in the poor and rural regions of China.

Bayview Baptist Church Calls Pastor
CB PeopleOn Sunday, May 3, the members of Bayview Baptist Church in Mongmong, Guam, voted to call Pastor Greg Atkinson to be their next Lead Pastor. Greg has accepted the call and will begin as the Lead Pastor-Teacher on August 1 after vacationing in the states with his wife, Terri, and family in July. Congratulations Greg, and may God bless you and the outreach ministries of Bayview Baptist Church.  Thanks also to Mike Albin, a Titus-trained Interim Pastor, who did an outstanding job in helping Bayview through this transitional time. Mike will return to the great Northwest later in August.

Pastor Moves to a New Ministry
CB PeopleSenior Pastor Jerry Wilke of First Baptist Church of West Los Angeles has accepted the call to be the Pastor of Seniors at First Baptist Church in Hemet. Pastor Jerry will conclude his 10 years of ministry at West LA on Sunday, May 31, and then spend the better part of June with his wife, Janelle, sailing their boat down to San Diego before beginning their next chapter of ministry on July 1 in Hemet, where he was on staff years ago. Jerry and Janelle will be missed at West LA, where he led his church with solid Bible preaching and wise leadership. Executive Pastor Jim Leonard will oversee the church as they implement their plans for the future.

Three Generations at Men's Retreat
CB PeoplePastor Derek Greenbaugh was at the Men's Retreat with his son and father this past month. Almost 200 men from 17 different churches attended this year's men's retreat and thoroughly enjoyed it. Many came forward to ask for prayer on Saturday night, and as one person wrote, "It was awesome, just what I needed!" Another wrote about our speaker, Tom Mercer, "He rocked the mic with powerful words of wisdom from God up above. A Jedi of God's Word." Another highlight this year was that all the events were included in the price. That meant more paintball warriors and high rope daredevils. Thanks to all those who came and those who had a part in making this happen.
Home with the Lord
HalbertsJim Halbert went to heaven at 2:00 am, Monday, May 18. The memorial service was held on Saturday, May 23, at Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes in Portland. Jim struggled with pulmonary fibrosis for two and a half years, and we know he is now happy in the presence of His Friend and Savior whom he loved and served and honored all his life.

Jim and his wife, Viola, served for many years as WorldVenture (CBI) missionaries in Africa. Later, Jim pastored and then served as special representative for WorldVenture here in Southern California and the Southwest, keeping churches informed of the many ministries going on around the world and especially in his beloved Côte d'Ivoire. Jim also provided great encouragement to pastors in a special ministry to clergy and worked with CBSC for many years, serving on the Board of Directors. A godly and humble man, Jim will be greatly missed until we see Him again with the Lord.

From Viola Halbert:
Jim expressed the desire for donations to be made to the Girls' Christian Vocational School special project in Côte d'Ivoire, so we wanted to pass on his wish. If it should be your desire to do this, contributions can be made online at www.worldventure.com/Give.html: Click on "Donate," then "Give to Other," and specify code 6464-917. Contributions can also be mailed to WorldVenture at 1501 W. Mineral Avenue, Littleton, CO 80120; and specify the same code number on the memo line. The many responses of care and prayer that I have already received are deeply appreciated.

Church Assessment
StethPhysical checkups are good for everyone. Usually once a year is a suggested routine. A church check-up is also good for everyone involved. It can reveal your strengths and weaknesses, providing means to maintain health and effectiveness in the years to come. Often you need outside observations to accurately reveal what is going on in the church. We at CBSC feel very strongly that each of our churches should have a church health assessment as often as you have a financial audit.  Please contact our office to find out how we may help you start your church assessment process. To demonstrate our commitment to growing healthy churches, we are offering a free assessment to the first CB member church over 200 who calls our office. 909.944.5900.

Decision Favors Christian Schools
ChildrenIf you have a Christian School, you may be interested in this court decision. Pacific Justice Institute announced that on April 30, the California Supreme court decided to uphold the decision of the state Court of appeals which protects private religious schools across California from discrimination lawsuits based on sexual orientation. In response to a recent case involving a Lutheran school that allegedly "discriminated" against two "lesbian" students, an appeals court decided this week that the private religious school was not a business and therefore did not have to comply with a state law that prohibits businesses from discriminating. To see the entire decision, you may click the following link.  http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/opinions/documents/E044811.DOC

TM's Executive Minister on Medical Leave
Dale SalicoDue to physicians' orders, Transformation Ministries Executive Minister Dale V. Salico has taken a temporary unplanned medical leave. Dale's health concerns include a clot in his left lung and an aneurysm in an aorta artery right next to the aorta heart valve that is leaking. It is anticipated, at this time, that Dale will return to work at the end of the summer. Your prayers, as well as your get well wishes and notes of encouragement to Dale and Elaine, are appreciated tremendously. As per Board policy, the Executive Committee appointed Ross Chenot as Acting Executive Minister for the duration of Dale Salico's absence.

Women Getting Ready for the Fall Retreats
Women's RetreatWomen's Retreat Coordinators from several churches met up at Pine Summit for a free one-day preview and planning meeting. They met Camp Director Mike Harris, and toured the lodges and the entire property. Later, they sat down with Vicki Smith, the CB Women's Ministries Director, and her planning team, to get an idea of what to expect at retreat this year and to give input to the scheduled events. Momentum is building toward great weekend retreats for all women in attendance. The English Women's Retreats are scheduled for September 25-27 and October 2-4. The Spanish Women's Retreat is September 18-20. The cost is only $99 for the A-frame Dorms and $155 for the lodges and homes.

Church Construction Started in China
China

Last year, CBSC, carrying donations from many of our churches, presented a large donation toward the construction of a new church and Christian training facility in a city located in the Southern Province of China. The desolated hills have been leveled now and the infrastructure construction completed. There are over 100K Christians in the province with 307 churches scattered throughout the area. This new facility will be immediately filled and these well-trained shepherds, so badly needed, will be sent out into the Lord's harvest. Thanks to all those who helped start this project.

Hope Again's New Assistant
CB PeopleVicki Lokken is now working at Hope Again! When a door didn't open for a teaching position after her move to LA, Vicki decided to fill the need as Hope Again's Administrative Assistant, working several hours a week. Vicki has skills in proofreading, filing, and creativity. What a great addition! She also leads a women's Bible study on Monday evenings while her husband, Ross, leads a men's Bible study at the same time. They are both really enjoying their involvement and sensing that they are truly making a difference for the Kingdom of God. Hope Again's Walk of Hope went very well although they did not reach their goal. Around 40 walked on May 2nd. For those of you that prayed - thank you! For those that prayed and gave - double thanks!! You can still give... just send your gift to Hope Again, 5121 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA90027 and mark it for Ross and Vicki Walkathon. 323.661.4004.

Proposition 8 Upheld
CourtNo doubt you have already heard that on Tuesday, May 27th the Supreme Court of California by a 6 to 1 vote, upheld the vote of the people by which Prop 8 was passed into law to protect traditional marriage in our State Constitution. You can read the decision here, all 185 pages of it, as it appears on the Court's website. Andy Pugno, Chief Legal Counsel wrote about the victory:

First, it is important to pause and fully appreciate the enormous odds we overcame in this case. We, the people, were up against all the major national gay rights organizations, the State Attorney General, numerous cities and counties, labor unions, law professors, legislators, corporations with deep pockets --- basically the entire political establishment ---- as well as literally hundreds of lawyers working hard to overturn Prop 8.  Under those conditions it is even more amazing that we ultimately prevailed in winning this case to uphold the will of the voters.  We have much to be thankful for.

Second, the Court's decision to continue recognizing those same-sex couples who obtained marriage licenses prior to the passage of Prop 8 should be kept in perspective. Remember that a large number of the marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples were for out-of-state residents travelling to California --- which will not be recognized anyway in the vast majority of their home states. Moreover, if California goes as Massachusetts did after legalizing gay marriage, a substantial portion of the still-recognized gay marriages will be dissolved by divorce within a few years. In the end, only a tiny number of gay marriages will continue to be recognized. What really matters is that the vast majority of what was at stake in this case --- the right of the voters to amend the state constitution to restore traditional marriage going forward --- ultimately proved to be a complete victory for us!

Yes on 8Last, even as we celebrated our victory for the more than 7 million voters who approved Prop 8 at the polls, our opponents were already announcing today their intention to bring another measure to reverse Prop 8 in a future election, and to conduct a grassroots campaign in the mean time to change the hearts and minds of California voters to favor gay marriage. Also, we just learned that another challenge (this time in federal court) has been filed against Prop 8. In other words, although today was a major victory of epic proportions, the war is not over.
