Some Year-End Planning Ideas

While we, at the Law Firm of Kavesh, Minor & Otis, counsel our clients on estate planning and are one of the most experienced law firms in the preparation of estate planning documents for those in the Los Angeles and Orange Counties of Southern California, we do understand the importance of also having your financial planning needs addressed as well. This is one of the reasons why our law firm has worked with some of the nation's leading financial advisors to provide such services to our clients.
With the holidays approaching, we understand that financial planning might be one of the last things you have time to handle. So, we thought this informative Year-End Financial Planning Checklist would be of interest as a quick reminder of items that you may want to take care of by the end of the year.
- If you were 71 or older in 2011, make sure you take the required minimum distribution (RMD) from your individual retirement account (IRA) before Dec. 31. If you don't, the IRS can penalize you 50 percent of the amount you should have withdrawn.
- If you inherited an IRA in 2011 from someone who was taking required distributions, make sure that person took their RMD before they died. If not, then you must take it for them or pay the 50 percent penalty. You must also start taking distributions based upon your own life expectancy next year.
- If you turned 70½ in 2011, you can wait until April 1, 2012, to take your 2011 RMD. However, for income tax reasons, that may be a bad move. Do some tax planning before you decide.
- If you are self-employed, review your retirement plan options and year-to-date contributions. Your choices include Simple IRAs, SEP-IRAs, individual 401(k)s and defined-benefit plans. Some plans must be in place by the end of the year. Check with your tax or financial adviser.
- Examine your investments. If needed, rebalance your portfolio. If you have mutual funds or stocks that you want to sell or replace, consider selling them before the end of the year (particularly if you have a loss).
- Read on for Items 6 through 10...

Most businesses automatically have a Yelp page and customers can leave reviews and ratings. You can view our Yelp page for more information! We received this wonderful review from one of our client's daughters and thought we'd share her review with all of you.
Kavesh, Minor & Otis is the law firm that manages my parents' living trust. Since I'm the closest child to them, I participate in this tedious and sometimes dark, yet invaluable subject, as I am the trustee. As the laws change every year, the firm invites their clients to a weekend morning presentation of what's new. They held this year's update a couple weeks ago at the Manhattan Beach Marriott - - during which Philip Kavesh spoke and introduced a colleague of his - - a financial advisor that occupies an office within the same suite as this law firm, and they work hand in hand with clients. Both were extremely articulate speakers, taking Q&A tirelessly, and charismatically answering all questions 'til every last detail is covered. After the presentation, they offered appointments for a free consult to go over what would be prudent to change/update; our appointment was for this morning. Over the years, we have worked with a couple different attorneys to update the living trust. Jane Lee has been wonderful with us, and today John Chang was similarly detailed and patient with all our questions - - of which we had MANY. There are always so many details to go over, that my head starts to explode. It's amazing that I can retain anything or think clearly! Both Jane and John were so very patient, that we never felt the least bit shy to ask anything - - even the same question multiple times. We also met with a financial advisor to go over the financial management side of the trust. He was extremely patient and kind with my parents, especially my dad who can get set in his ways at times. His Administrative Assistant also walked in to clarify some specifics and was extremely helpful. Leaving the office after our appointments today, my head is definitely still exploding - - but I'm confident that we will get the support we need from both Kavesh Minor & Otis and their financial advisors. - Lucy Y. As with all of our client testimonials, this testimonial was provided by an actual client's daughter and it does not constitute or guarantee your results. We welcome the reviews of many more of our clients. You can do so, by clicking the Yelp icon below. Thank you, Lucy! And, thanks in advance to those that will be posting a review on our page! |

Kristina Schneider, Website Marketing Coordinator
Kristina has been with the firm since July 2004, shortly after receiving her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Pepperdine University. Over the years, Kristina has worn many hats to assist the firm, including administrative duties to Mr. Kavesh, help with marketing and seminar facilitation and even assistance with firm management. Most recently, Kristina has taken on the role as the firm's Website Marketing Coordinator and assists the firm with our website, blog entries and our monthly e-mail newsletters (like the one you're reading right now!). Kristina grew up in Torrance (graduated from North High School in 1999) and enjoys playing club basketball, reading and writing in her spare time. She is a big hockey fan, thanks to Mr. Kavesh, and enjoys cheering on the Los Angeles Kings. Also, Kristina is the proud auntie to her 3 beautiful nieces, Alexis, Riley and Amaia.
