Happy 30th Anniversary A Note from the President, Philip KaveshOn October 17, 2011, the Law Firm of Kavesh, Minor & Otis marked its 30th Anniversary. In looking back at our journey, it is humbling to see just how far we have come.
It all started in 1979, when I arrived in California. How I got here is an interesting story. As fate often works, I was living in New Jersey and I had no idea I was bound for California until an unexpected event occurred in late 1979. My sister, who had a round trip air ticket to visit our aunt and uncle in Playa Del Rey, suddenly became engaged, moved to London, England and left the airline ticket to me! So, for the first time ever, I visited California during Christmas 1979. Just before I came out, I had earned a Masters Degree in Tax Law from the University of Miami, in sunny Florida. My year there was the first time I had experienced a winter outside of the Northeast and I found I didn't miss winters in New Jersey at all! When I graduated, I returned to my hometown of Vineland, New Jersey, a small farm town in the southern part of New Jersey (yes, New Jersey does have farmland, which is why its nickname is "The Garden State"!). Unfortunately, I had graduated into a recession and the job offers I was getting were for less money than I had made working in a glass factory before I even went to law school! I knew there was something better available, but I just wasn't sure what that was. So, when I arrived at my aunt and uncle's place in December of 1979, they encouraged me to throw my hat in the ring at a few tax law firms and I thought, "What have I got to lose?" After all, I loved the warm California winter! I didn't even plan to look for work when I came out here, so I had to put together a resume, which I then hand-delivered to a few law firms. Believe it or not, in just a few days... Read on...

New Company Website
The Law Firm of Kavesh, Minor & Otis is happy to announce the launch of its newly improved website. While the look, feel and even images of its previous website are still clearly visible on the new website, the overall navigation of the website has improved tremendously. The website now makes it easier to find out information about estate planning , request the free report entitled, "The Top 10 Estate Planning Mistakes People Make", view the seminar schedule and view information on the company . We have a new Company Blog, which you may wish to subscribe to, which will include announcements, articles, current events, and other estate planning tips and other local events to the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. We still have some areas of the website that we will be building up very soon!

Peter's World Series Predictions

If you've ever met with attorney, Peter Keon, you know he's a baseball fan-atic! He takes off each spring to visit training camps in Florida and Arizona and bleeds red for his beloved Phillies, having originally grown up in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, his Phillies have been knocked out of the play offs, but here's his World Series predictions... The World Series looks like a battle between the haves and the have nots. The St. Louis Cardinals are second only to the New York Yankees in franchise World Series Championships. The Cardinals have won 10 World Series Championships in their storied history. Their most recent championship was in 2006.
The Texas Rangers won just their first post season series last year when they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series. They then went on to win the American League pennant beating the New York Yankees. They lost to the San Francisco Giants in the 2010 World Series. This year they have been powered by Nelson Cruz who set a post season series record by homering six times against the Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series. The Rangers have never won the World Series in their 51 year history.
The Cardinals are led by Albert Pujols, one of the best players in Major League Baseball. The Cardinals have been on a roll since late August when they came from 10 1/2 games back in the wild card standings to make it into the playoffs. They have defeated both the Philadelphia Phillies, who won a major league best 102 games, and the Milwaukee Brewers.
The National League will have the home field advantage for the World Series as a result of winning the All Star game this year.
The Rangers have stated that they are not content in making it to the World Series since they were there last year and were beaten in 5 games by the Giants.
The Cardinals have the experience and also have a seasoned manager in Tony La Russa. The Rangers seek redemption from the hard loss they suffered last year.
This should be a great series with the Cardinals relying on their experience and home field advantage to win their 11th World Series championship in 6 games over the Rangers. |

Fall Recipe: Easy 7-Layered Bean Dip
Fall and winter time is often a time for parties and get-togethers with friends and family. This is one of our staff member's recipes for a layered bean dip, which has been a party favorite for years!
Ingredients:
- 32oz refried beans
- 16oz salsa
- 16oz sour cream
- 16oz shredded cheese
- 5 avocados
- 2 packs of guacamole mix
- Sliced Olives
- 1 or 2 roma tomatoes
- 9in x 9in deep aluminum foil pan (with lid)
- Sliced jalapenos (optional)
Directions:
- Warm up a 32oz can of refried beans. You can make them homemade if you have time, but I just get a large can of Rosarita Traditional Vegetarian Refried Beans.
- Cut open 5 avocados and place in a large bowl. Throw in 2 packs of guacamole seasoning mix and stir in until seasoning is thoroughly blended in and avocados are blended evenly. Again, this is something you can make from scratch if so desired.
- Using a grader, take a block of Monterey Jack cheese and shred cheese on medium thickness. You can purchase packet of pre-shredded cheese, however I prefer to the texture that homemade shredded cheese gives to the dip.
- Spread refried beans evenly at the bottom of aluminum foil pan with a spoon or spatula.
- Spread guacamole mix evenly over refried beans.
- Take your jar of salsa (I prefer La Victoria's Medium Thick & Chunky salsa, as other salsas that are more watery can make your dip watery) and spread evenly over the guacamole.
- Using a spoon, stir a 16oz container of sour cream and then spread sour cream evenly over the salsa.
- Sprinkle layer of shredded cheese over sour cream.
- Chop up 1 or 2 roma tomatoes and sprinkle over shredded cheese.
- Open up small can of sliced olives and sprinkle over shredded cheese.
- For added flavor, you can sprinkle sliced (pickled) jalapenos.
- Other toppings or ingredients that can be added or used: cilantro, onions, black beans instead of refried beans, corn, tortilla strips, chopped lettuce.
Grab some tortilla or pita chips and ENJOY!
