BE SMART ABOUT WIRELESS
|
Every day, we are at Starbucks and Borders tapping away at our laptops. For individuals and students, it's often a relief to get out of the house, office or dorm and into a public space to do some work. But one should be careful about what kind of online work is safe and secure to do in a public place. DO - Check your email as long as you don't send any identifying details back and forth. DON'T - Pay your bills, log onto your bank's website or place retail orders with your credit card. You open yourself up to hackers at a public Wi-Fi "hotspot." Hackers use software called "packet sniffers", easily available online, to capture your data in a wireless environment.

REGULAR COMPUTER MAINTENANCE
|
Computers are like cars. If you provide basic maintenance and repair, computers can run better for a longer period of time. There are maintenance tasks one can do daily, weekly and monthly in order to protect data and lengthen the lifespan of a computer. Daily: Backup your data. This cannot be emphasized enough. Hard drives fail often with no warning. If you do not have a current backup, you can lose all your data, pictures, music, emails, etc.

COMCAST CUSTOMERS BEWARE
| Recently, there have been instances of Comcast email accounts getting compromised or hacked. The hackers steal your password and then send emails out as you requesting money from contacts in your address book. If your well-meaning contacts respond, they are asked to wire money.
If this happens to you, immediately change your password! Then contact Comcast. They will need you reset your email as they often block the send/receive ability of those accounts that have been compromised. Those of you with very easy passwords (i.e; 123456) should change them proactively.

FUN FIND ON THE WEB
|
Each day, Groupon.com features unbeatable money saving deals on the best
stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in your city. By promising businesses a
minimum number of customers, Groupon offers discounts you won't find anywhere
else. They call it "collective buying power!" Give it a try!
How It Works
- You receive an email daily with a feature of something cool at an
unbeatable price.
- You only can get the deal if enough people join that
day... so invite your friends!
- You have to purchase the deal in advance. Then, you print the coupon on your home printer.
- If not enough people buy into the daily offer, the deal is cancelled by Groupon and your credit card is not charged.
