| Windows 7 Release Date |
Microsoft Announces Official Release Date for Windows 7October 22, 2009 is the official release date. I have been testing this new version of Windows and find it works much faster than Vista. So far, no word on if there will be a free upgrade for computer purchases before October 22. If you are in the market for a new computer, you may want to wait until the release date or at least until Microsoft announces an upgrade plan. | |

Have you been getting emails from friends saying they have pictures of you on Tagged.com? If you ask your friend, they say they never sent you that email. What is going on?
Tagged.com is a social networking site which has been in existence since 2004. Its current registration process asks applicants to supply an email address and password for accessing the corresponding account so Tagged can "match you up with your friends." Tagged uses that information to traverse address books (or other email contacts) and send emailed invitations to the addresses found there. These invitations, like the ones you received, deceptively appear to have been sent by the Tagged members themselves and claim that the recipients have been "added as a friend", "sent photos", or "sent a private message" on Tagged (even though no deliberate "adding" has taken place, nor have any photos or private messages for the recipients been posted for viewing).
Tagged.com's current terms of service now include a disclaimer acknowledging that its member's personal information may be used for the purpose of "initiating commercial email messages (i.e. sending spam).
There is nothing you can do about this once you have given Tagged.com your email address and password for your email account. If you have inadvertently given them this information, change your email password so Tagged.com would no longer have access to my account. The takeaway is to never give out your email password. Check out the entry about Tagged.com on Snopes. |
Backup, Backup, Backup
|
|
The task of backing up your digital data becomes more and more important as people download hundreds and thousands of digital songs and movies and upload digital pictures to their computers.
You MUST backup your data. Hard drives fail and they usually fail at inconvenient times. They fail when you have a project due for work or school. Maybe you'll have a flood in your house. The bathroom upstairs could leak all over the computer downstairs. A power outage could cause a surge that fries your hard drive. The list goes on and on...
Here is a plan for data backup:
1. Backup all your electronic devices regularly. That means your PDA, Blackberry, and iPhone with all your contacts and calendar entries. These devices can plug into a computer and automatically back up or sync.
2. Backup data on your computer regularly. Some people can do this daily, others weekly. Think of it in terms of how much data are you willing to lose. If the answer is none, then you better backup every day. Invest in either an external hard drive with backup software or an online backup service. Some external hard drives plug into your router and will allow you to backup all the computers in your home to the same device.
Think about backing up both on-site and off-site. An external hard drive is great until it somehow gets damaged. You could lose your computer and your backup if they are located in the same place.
For backup solutions, see my blog about backup.

Slow Computer?
|
|
If your computer is over 2 years old and running slowly, don't rush out to buy a new one! It's time to wipe it out and reload it. Make sure your data is backed up and reload Windows. This will make your computer speedy again just like when you bought it. If that sounds too complicated, let me know and I can do it for you!
If you have bought a new computer and don't have use for your old one, contact me. I can refurbish your old computer so you have a second one or I will donate it for you. If it's too old, I can have it recycled.
