It Pays to Listen to Mom
Left to right: Scott Selig, Cathy Selig, and Steve Selig of Selig Enterprises.Steve and Cathy Selig's mother
always told them, You can never do wrong by doing right." They
must have listened, because they seem to be doing alright for themselves
and the company their grandfather, Ben Massell, started 90 years ago. "What made this company what
it is and what makes it so much different is the mindset and outlook
that (Steve's) parents conveyed to him and how they ran the company
and what he sends down to me," said Scott Selig, Vice President of Selig Enterprises and a fourth-generation member of the family firm
along with his sister, Mindy. "At the end of the day, it's not necessarily
about the bottom line. It's about taking care of those who have taken
care of you and an obligation to give back to the community." Selig - the family and the
company - always has combined conservative deal making with entrepreneurial
and opportunistic zeal. Steve Selig worked in the Carter White House
in the late 1970s before returning to Atlanta and leading Selig Enterprises'
effort to acquire AAA Parking. Around the same time, he started Concert
Southern Promotions with legendary promoters Alex Cooley and Peter Conlon.
Scott Selig started and later sold a telecommunications firm before
joining Selig Enterprises, which includes a 10 million-square-foot real
estate portfolio and the national colossus that is AAA Parking. An insular company for its
first 80-plus years, Selig now partners with Daniel Corp., MetLife and
the Canyon-Johnson Urban Funds on the 12th & Midtown
mixed-use development, a cornerstone of the Midtown Mile. Selig also
is developing Publix-anchored centers in Alabama and is planning and
permitting a 300-acre mixed-use development in Lagrange. Through all the opportunities,
though, the one constant is family and the reliability, consistency and trust those ties bring to Selig Enterprises, whether it was Steve
Selig and his father, Simon, 30 years ago or Steve, Cathy, Scott and
Mindy today.
"When dad was alive, I think
it was comforting to him - and I know it was comforting to me -to
have someone you can trust 100 percent, whether it's regarding business,
personal of family," Steve Selig said. "It's a real positive."
