Colliers International: The More Things Change...
Colliers Leaders. Standing, Bob Mathews (left) and Jon Barry (right). Seated, Bick Cardwell.
Bick Cardwell, Bob Mathews
and Jon Barry, not to mention Bill Law, Bob Allen, Caldwell Zimmerman
and the entire Cauble team. They're still the same guys that made
Cauble & Co. and then Colliers Cauble and then Colliers Spectrum
Cauble one of Atlanta's leading commercial real estate firms. Now, though, the playing field
is a little bigger as the company has entered an agreement with Colliers
International and Toronto-based First Service Real Estate Advisors,
creating the world's third-largest services firm under the Colliers
International brand. What was once a network is
now a fully integrated enterprise with 480 offices globally. Ultimately,
First Service will own 70 percent of Colliers International with the
remainder owned by companies in the former Colliers network. "It's business as
usual on steroids," said Cardwell, chairman of Colliers International's
Atlanta office. The transition enables Colliers
to integrate its platform to better meet clients' needs on a
national and international basis, especially in fields like corporate
services, project management and valuation, Mathews said. The process hasn't been simple,
though. Colliers International lost a few members of the old network,
notably Colliers Turley Martin Tucker in the Midwest, Cassidy &
Pinkard in Washington, D.C., and Colliers ABR in New York, which formed
a new firm, Cassidy Turley. Conversely, Colliers International gained
a larger presence in New York by adding First Service Williams, formerly
Williams GVA. By the end of the third quarter, Colliers International
intends to backfill many of the Cassidy Pinkard markets, said Mathews,
president and CEO of the Atlanta office. "What you're seeing is
nothing less than what you're seeing in many other industries, increased
consolidation," Mathews said. "It will probably accelerate over
the next few years because of market conditions."

Taking the Bull by the Horns

Left to right: Michael Bull, Daniel Latshaw, Kyle Stonis, Rob Whitmire and Paul Zeman in the Bull Realty conference room overlooking the city.
Michael Bull, President of Bull Realty, has devised a partnership plan to retain - and compensate - his top talent and fuel the company's growth. Bull has named as partners Rob Whitmire, Senior Vice President of Foreclosure and Special Asset Service; Paul Zeman, Vice President of Health Care Real Estate Services; Kyle Stonis, Vice President of Retail Investments; and Daniel Latshaw, Vice President of the firm's educational, non-profit and religious practice at Bull Realty. As partners, Whitmire, Zeman, Stonis and Latshaw have the opportunity to participate in profit sharing, profits from any potential sale and succession planning, and they also gain a leadership position and input into Bull's direction.
"An industry expert once told me if the commercial agents in Atlanta knew what our platform offered, many more would be knocking on our door," Michael Bull said. "We don't go after brokers at other firms, but if brokers are looking for a change, we want them to consider Bull Realty. The partners plan strengthens the benefits for experienced brokers.
"It may end up as a ground floor opportunity with huge benefits down the road," Bull continued. "It beats working at a firm without these opportunities." The partnership plan dovetails nicely with Bull's recent growth. The company's listings have increased 300 percent as Bull has expanded its brokerage team to 30 executives, including veteran retail and management pro Jim Atkins and veteran industrial executive Tommy Hiles.

NAIOP Night

The ladies stop for a quick group photo before heading into the dinner and comedy show.
Who needs Fight Night when NAIOP Night is this fun? Another huge success, it kicked off this past Thursday at the St. Regis Hotel in Buckhead, with more than 550 guests in attendance enjoying cocktails, dinner and the crazy antics of Second City Improv. Team Rooster was there in full force, of course.
The Second City Improv team cracking up the crowd with local humor.
Playing up the local late night hot spots such as Five Paces, addressing a recent battle between commercial real estate publications and playing the exaggerated (but frightfully dead-on) parts of CRE professionals were a huge hit with the crowd.

According to our internal market intelligence, several after parties were allegedly enjoyed at Five Paces, the St. Regis bar and the Pool Hall, just to name a few. We've heard the stories, but the night's secrets remain safe with the Rooster. It was just another legendary NAIOP Night. What else did you expect?
Left to right: John Poulos of Newmark Knight Frank, Jim Medbery of Binswanger, Dave Watson of Grubb & Ellis, Austin McDonald of McDonald Development and Gregg Metcalf of Jones Lang LaSalle give NAIOP Night a big cheers!
