Wells Real Estate Investment Trust II, a nationwide office property owner and manager, has earned a Silver Award in the NAREIT® "Leader in the Light" competition, which honors REIT companies that demonstrate "superior and sustained energy-use practices."

"It's exciting to win a silver award in our first year of competing in the NAREIT rankings," Leo Wells, president of Wells, said.  "And the real value is that these awards lead property owners to continue making improvements in their environmental performance, which is something many tenants are looking for."

Highlights of Wells' environmental and energy achievements include six Wells REIT II properties certified with LEED or Green Globe designation, all full-service properties managed according to ENERGY STAR standards with more than 80% exceeding the national average for energy efficiency; and 23 buildings owned by Wells have achieved ENERGY STAR certification.

The Rooster was invited to the annual NAIOP Future Leader's (NFL) lunch with the NAIOP Board of Directors at the Atlanta Financial Center on Tuesday.  The future leaders used the opportunity to ask questions of the board about their career experiences, the challenges of staying positive in a weak market, and getting the most out of their NAIOP experience.  Lisa Dunavin, current president of NAIOP, offered this piece of advice to the leaders of tomorrow:  "As with anything in this world, you get out what you put into it."

The Rooster joined Newmark Knight Frank yesterday morning at their office in midtown for the final breakfast series of the year with Lars Anderson of BB&T presenting.  To a mixed crowd of almost 60 real estate professionals, law firms and bankers in attendance, Anderson explained why they stand strong in the struggling market.

Speaker Lars Anderson and Jeff McCoy, both of BB&T.

"We're just country bankers doing our thing," Lars Anderson said smiling, getting a terrific response from the group.  He went on to explain how BB&T focuses on strong local relationships and avoids exotic financing to manage in the current economy.  With the downward pressure on the values of assets in our market, and the "wind in their face", he explained how BB&Ts capital position and relationship through high quality loans keeps them ranked in the top 10  U.S. banks for commercial real estate lending.
