Using and iPad, iPod or iPhone with my Special Needs Child
Built-in Accessibility Features
Below are a few features that are already built-in to an iPad, iPod, and iPhone that can be helpful with vision, hearing or physical impairments. This newsletter will focus on what is already on the device and helpful resources to find appropriate apps on the iPad, iPod and iPhone.
All devices need to be running iOS 5. To turn these features on, go to the Settings app - General - Accessibility. Vision - Voice Over (screen reader). Touch the screen to hear what is under your finger, activate with a double-tap. A short cut to automatically start the screen reader is to triple click the home button. This feature, i.e. Triple-click Home, has to be turned on in the Accessibility area first.
- Zoom (magnify screen). Double-tap with 3 fingers. To move around screen, drag 3 fingers while zoomed.
- Large Text (increase font size). Larger text in Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Messages and Notes.
- White on Black (black background with white text).
- Speak Selection (text to speech). Highlight text by a double tap on word - select Speak.
- Speak Auto-text. Automatically speak auto-corrections and auto-capitalizations.
Hearing - Mono Audio. Direct audio to play in one side of headset, as opposed to both left and right sides.
- Custom Vibrations (for iPhone only). When calls come in, a unique vibration pattern to people in Contacts.
Physical - Assistive Touch. For users with motor difficulties. Allows one finger use of the multi-touch gestures using an overlay menu.
- Incoming Calls (for iPhone only). Change where you want the default incoming calls (headset or speaker).
