"Parenting Together" is now on Facebook!
You are invited to join our new-and growing-parent support and information group on facebook! Parenting Together in NE, MN is a closed (membership authorized by site administrators) support and information group just for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities living in our area. Group Administrators Cindy Kellett (parent and public health nurse), Heather Shenett-Giancola (Carlton county social worker) or Voula Heffernan (retired school social worker and current IC parent advocate) will help you join the group whether you are new to facebook or a veteran. If you currently have a facebook account, you may search for our "Parenting Together in NE, MN" group and ask to join the group. One of the administrators will allow you access when we determine you are legitimate. | Parenting Together | | Support Group just for Parents of Children with Special Needs |
Parenting Together Support Group is for any parent or guardian of a child with special needs attending a school served by the Northern Lights Special Education Cooperative.
This is a free support group that meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 6:00 - 8:30 PM at the Cloquet Schools Administrative Building (Garfield).
The purpose is to:
-bring parents together to share their joys and struggles with others who understand and care
-learn about school and community resources and to develop skills to better advocate for children with disabilities
Next Meeting Dates: October 12th, 2010 November 9th, 2010 December 14th, 2010 January 11th, 2011 February 8th, 2011 March 8th, 2011 April 12th, 2011 May 10th, 2011
Facilitated by Jim Kneeland. Jim has been a parent of son with disabilities for 32 years. His experiences along the way have given him the perspective he needs in his work as a Disability Social Worker and parent group facilitator. AWAARE - Website for parents of children with Autism to prevent wandering This is a website whose focus is to prevent wandering incidents and deaths within the Autism community. Information includes a general brochure available for download, FAQ's, and tracking technology.

Sibling Day
Saturday, December 4th, 2010 Proctor High School 131 9th Avenue; Proctor 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
This is a special FREE event planned For the Siblings of children with special needs! Siblings must be ages 6-17.
Activities include snacks, fun games and small group discussion. Separate Parent session.

Parent Conference and Dinner

The Minnesota Parent Center's fourth annual statewide parent dinner and conference is Oct. 28 and 29 at PACER Center in Bloomington. This free event offers information that parents can use to help their children achieve their education goals. "Asperger Syndrome, and Behavior in Autism Spectrum Disorders" December 2nd and 3rd, 2010 Crowne Plaza, Mpls. North
2200 Freeway Blvd Brooklyn, MN 55430 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM Learning Objectives for Participants: - Create strategies designed to improve language comprehension and usage for students with AS (Asperger Syndrome)
- Define and explain the unique cognitive patterns of people with AS
- Design strategies to improve cognitive processing and problem solving techniques among people with AS
- Recognize some of the unique social patterns associated with AS
- Identify and explain the relationship between sensory integration and school and/or social success.
- Plan an emotional support system for people affected by AS
