Welcome to our first Parent e-newsletter for families of children with disabilities!
The purpose of this e-newsletter is to receive resources in an efficient and easy to read format.
We hope to send this e-newsletter out quarterly with information on upcoming support groups and workshops, special education resources and weblinks, and "hot" topics in special education.
The goals of this e-newsletter is:
- to become informed about current events for families of children with disabilities
- to become informed about current topics in special education
- to become effective advocates for children with disabilities
- to connect with agencies that provide assistance to families

| Support Group just for Parents of Children with Special Needs |

Parenting Together Support Group is for any parent or guardian of a child with special needs attending a school served by the Northern Lights Special Education Cooperative.
This is a free support group that meets the 2nd Thursday of the month from 6:30 - 9:00 PM at the Cloquet Schools Administrative Building (Garfield).
The purpose is to:
-bring parents together to share their joys and struggles with others who understand and care
-learn about school and community resources and to develop skills to better advocate for children with disabilities
Next Meeting Date: May 13th, 2010
Facilitated by Jim Kneeland. Jim has been a parent of son with disabilities for 32 years. His experiences along the way have given him the perspective he needs in his work as a Disability Social Worker and parent group facilitator.

Minnesota Association for Children's Mental Health: Annual Conference

This conference offers professionals and families opportunities to
- improve policy and enhance practices for children (birth to 21) who have or are at risk for mental health disorders;
- acquire skills and strategies that will improve outcomes for children with mental health needs;
- gain knowledge of best practices and latest research in children's mental health and related fields;
- enrich understanding of different perspectives and common goals in support of all children.

PACER's 2010 Family Leadership Summit

The Family Leadership Summit is an opportunity for parents of young children with special needs or health concerns who want to gain leadership skills and improve outcomes for other children and families facing similar concerns.

Arrowhead Youth Games (Courage Center Duluth)
UMD Ward Wells Field House, Duluth, MN 10AM - 2PM
This is a free Adaptive Activity Extravaganza for kids in Special Education (Grades K-8).
Events will include dance, parachute games, archery, races, frisbee, hockey, cycling, and much more. There will also be demos of different sports and activities.
This event will happen rain or shine (indoors). Parents/caregivers/friends are encouraged to attend. This is a brown bag event, lunch will not be provided.
