Text to table and table to text in Microsoft Word

You might have had this happen to you: someone sends a file with data that you need. You open it up and realize the formatting is off. It’s in a table, along with columns of other data, and you need a bulleted list. You realize you’re going to have to copy and paste or retype all the information you need.

Another scenario is that you’re putting together data, but you’ve just tabbed from one “column” to another. Maybe you have a list of items separated by commas. Then you realize that what you’re working on is becoming much longer than you had thought and needs to be in a table. Time to redo it all?

2012 State of Mobility
reprinted with permission from Symantec

It seems like just a few years ago that the Internet completely changed the way we do business. And now we are seeing it again, with mobile devices as the catalyst. Once mostly forbidden by IT, smartphones are now being used by hundreds of millions of employees throughout the world to access corporate information to keep up in today’s 24/7 business world. Symantec commissioned the 2012 State of Mobility survey to gauge how organizations are coping with this trend. The survey included 6,275 organizations—from small businesses to large enterprises—across 43 countries.

The survey shows that we have reached a tipping point in the business use of mobile devices. Most organizations are making line-of-business application available. They are also developing custom applications, and even making plans to create corporate app stores for employees to download approved software. All this points to the goal of improving business agility. Businesses want to improve efficiency and increase workplace effectiveness, as well as get things done quicker, and mobility offers them the chance to do that.

Computers: Is Consumer Grade Enough for Your Business?

Sure, it's enticing. You’ll save money right now if you run out to your local big box store or hop online and purchase that computer or that combo firewall/wireless router that's on sale. But is that money saved really worthwhile for your business in the long run?

They say that a penny saved is a penny earned, but when it comes to your businesses technology, that penny saved may cost you a lot more later on down the road.

The main reason is that the majority of equipment sold at the big box stores are for home users and aren't made for the higher demands of a small business. Think about it—is that combo firewall/wireless router really going to stop a professional hacker from accessing your critical business or customer data, or provide the security to protect your network? It's not.

Two Important Business Terms
by Diana Johnson, Wood Networks

They probably aren’t what you think either. Nope, I am not talking about profit, loss, free enterprise, empowerment, management, productivity, or even social media. Nowhere in this article will you find me pontificating on skills transfer, the knowledge economy, or authority marketing. Actually two of the most important words in any business are ones we are all very familiar with. The problem is many business people have neglected to truly implement them. In our busy, frantic professional and personal lives we have often left these at the wayside. Ignoring their importance can lead to business delays and cost inefficiency. What are these key words you ask?

A Clever PowerPoint Trick
reprinted with permission from the HP Technology at Work

Microsoft® PowerPoint users often miss the mark when trying to produce effective presentations, especially when they rely only on the software’s more rudimentary capabilities. It's no surprise; the learning curve for beginners is fairly shallow, as PowerPoint’s basic tools and menus mirror that of its Office siblings, such as the ubiquitous Microsoft Word. Most beginners quickly intuit how to input information, add slides, add pictures, adjust slide layout, change text colors and add basic lines and shapes.

Operating Systems: Why Windows Home Edition won't cut it

Are consumer grade software and hardware good enough for your business? We're asking that question, and we're going to focus on Windows operating systems in this article. This comparison really goes hand-in-hand with a comparison of computers, as Consumer Grade computers generally come with Windows Home versions pre-installed.

Most small businesses with more than a few computers have them connected to a server, creating a network. The majority of these servers run Microsoft Windows Small Business Server (SBS), which includes Windows Server and Exchange software. This allows the network to communicate with all of the components that are connected together, i.e. other computers, data files, printers, and email.

Connection

This is where issues generally start! It's difficult to make a proper network connection with a Windows Home computer (XP, Vista, or 7). The problem is that Windows Home operating systems (OS) don't have the functionality to properly connect to the networking environment—only the Professional or Business editions do. You might be able to connect and use some of the features of the Small Business Server, but it probably won't work in the manner you need.
