Create or remove a drop-down list in Excel

To make data entry easier in Excel, or to limit entries to certain items that you define, you can create a drop-down list of valid entries that is compiled from cells elsewhere in the workbook. When you create a drop-down list for a cell, it displays an arrow in that cell. To enter information in that cell, click the arrow, and then click the entry that you want.

Seen Any Good Apps Lately?

As we scour the mobility universe researching solutions for customers, we have the opportunity to take a look at dozens of apps for various problems. We thought some of our readers might be interested in what we find. With that in mind, the “There’s an App For That!” column was born. This will be a regular feature until something more interesting comes along! In most cases these will be apps for the IOS platform (iPhone and/or iPad), although there will be the occasional android app (and eventually Windows 8 mobile). If you’ve found apps that you think might be of interest to a wider audience, please shoot us an email; we’ll be glad to include them. On the other hand, if you need advice on an app, or help finding an app to do a specific task, let us know.

This month, we’re going to take a quick look at note-taking apps. This sounds like a pretty simple (boring) area, but you’ll be surprised at what apps in this category can do. This isn’t intended to be an in-depth review, only some comments on what we’ve found to point you in the right direction. If you have specific questions, please feel free to ask!

One of the ways the iPad can become truly useful for us is to replace the steno notebook or yellow pad. When we meet with customers, vendors or prospects, we generally take notes. Typing the notes on a laptop really doesn’t work well for a fluid conversation, but electronic notes might. They allow you to write, draw, and highlight, and best of all, keep it organized! So with that in mind, we started our quest. For the results of that quest, just cast your eyes slightly to the right to the new column.

We hope you find this feature useful! If there are other areas of technology you’d be interested in reading about in The Help Desk, just click here and let us know!

Everyone at Work is on the Same Team
by Debra J. Schmidt

Every time a customer contacts your company, he or she doesn’t care what your title is, what your job responsibilities are or what department you’re in. Frankly, all your customer really wants to know is, “Are you willing to help?”

Windows 8: A Game Changer?

Microsoft will be releasing their latest version of their Windows operating system, Windows 8, later this year. This OS is unlike any version of Windows we have come to know. How? It’s designed with mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) in mind. According to the Microsoft website, “It's Windows reimagined and reinvented from a solid core of Windows 7 speed and reliability. It's an all-new touch interface. It's a new Windows for new devices.”

Disruptive Technology
by Chris Geiser - cgeiser@pcstechnology.com

Can you make it to the end of this article without getting distracted?

I admit, in writing an article advocating less technology, I feel as sheepish as Anheuser-Busch must feel in posting the “Enjoy Responsibly” tag at the end of one of their million dollar Super Bowl commercials. But this problem of office distractions has been gnawing at me since Outlook began popping up email notifications some 10+ years ago. Ding! Hey, there’s another one. . .

What’s simpler than taking notes? And what better way to start utilizing that expensive book reader, game player, and email reader you’re carrying around! We’ve searched high and low to find the app that would make our steno pads go away completely. We still find ourselves scribbling with pen and paper occasionally, but these apps might just do away with that! They are all alike. . .  but all different. Here are a few highlights of each, but there are features galore for you to explore.

Outline – If you are a Microsoft One Note fan, this app is worth a look. It allows you to read your OneNote notes, but is very limited in functionality in this version.

Evernote – Evernote has the broadest platform support of anything here. There is a (free!) Evernote for IOS, Android, and Windows. When you create a note on any of the platforms, it effortlessly syncs to all of the others.

Noteshelf – This app allows you to pick your paper, your notebook cover, and organize your notes on a virtual bookshelf. You can even purchase specialty papers in the online store.

Noteability – Very fluid, easiest writing of any of the group. With a stylus, this app works most like pen and paper. It also syncs with Dropbox so backups are simple.

NotesPlus – Easy conversion of handwriting to text, syncs with Dropbox

Note Taker HD – Has a wealth of shapes, lines, pointers, etc. that can be easily added to your notes.

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it’s a good start on making your tablet more useful every day!

Force of Nature

As we mark the first anniversary of one of the largest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are teaming up this week to save lives from severe weather by encouraging the public to take proactive preparedness measures and inspire others to do the same.

As part of the first ever National Severe Weather Preparedness Week, citizens are encouraged to be a "force of nature" through a number of proactive steps:

Know Your Risk: Be aware of the severe weather risks in your area.
