May 2012

Dear Homeowner,

This year we've missed our April showers, and many of you are asking how May flowers will fare during the drought. Here are a few suggestions for successful plantings in this warm, dry weather.

Prep for Success

  • Aid moisture-retention by adding compost to your soil.
  • Cover beds with an organic mulch to keep weeds out and moisture in.
  • Water thoroughly, but only as needed. Set a regular watering schedule.
  • Fertilize in small doses, and only after roots have taken hold.

Mix It Up

Try adding some drought-hardy plants to your flower garden. Consider:

  • Flowering herbs like rosemary and oregano
  • Berry bushes like currents and gooseberries
  • Native wildflowers and flowering shrubs
  • Shade-tolerant hostas and variegated ground-covers

New Restrictions for Fertilizer Application

Spring has arrived, and the annual ritual has begun: New Jersey lawns are being raked, aerated, watered, and fertilized. This season, however, homeowners should be aware of a new, NJ State Law that sets restrictions on the application of fertilizer.

What's in the New Law?

The three-phase New Jersey law is designed to limit the amount of harmful runoff that pollutes our state's waterways. The law sets the toughest standards in the nation for fertilizer use and defines:

  1.  When fertilizer can be applied,
  2. Who can apply fertilizer,
  3. How much phosphorous and nitrogen a fertilizer can contain.

How Does This Affect the Homeowner?

Lawn professionals are required to complete training and testing in the current standards for fertilizer application and formulation. Homeowners who contract for lawn services should verify that company employees have completed this training and received their certification. This is the best way to avoid wasteful or unnecessary use of fertilizer, thus saving money--and the environment.

Enhance Home Value with Outdoor Living Spaces

There's no doubt that outdoor living brings families together and increases your home's usable living area, but did you know that your new deck, patio or outdoor cooking and entertainment area can also improve your property's value? To solidify a return on investment, it's important to create a well-defined plan before tackling your project. To professionally execute your outdoor living vision, taking dining, seating and ambiance into consideration. Rather than haphazardly choosing a patio set and grill, consider how stonework, water features and a built-in kitchen might better suit your goals. And, if you plan to sell your home in the next few years, think about which features are universally desireable to prospective buyers. At Green Meadows Landscaping, we provide free landscape construction consultations for patios, decks and outdoor living areas. Taking your lifestyle and budget into consideration, we'll extend your living area with a warm, inviting environment. Call to schedule your appointment today, and get busy enjoying the outdoors before summer is in full swing!
